Gold Point and Death Valley
« on: April 09, 2012, 01:52:34 PM »

Don & Carol and Andy & Sherry met Terrie and I at the house on Thurs. afternoon.  The six of us rode up Hwy. 50 to South Lake Tahoe.

The weather forecast for South Lake Tahoe.....snow flurries in the afternoon, low in the morning of 16F. :nervous:  But it looked great when we left....a few puffy clouds.  No big deal.

Really not very much snow for this time of the year at nearly 7,400 feet

and as we roll along Pioneer Trail from Myers to South Lake Tahoe the snow flurries begin to pick up the pace.  Sure am glad the hotel is only a couple more miles! :2vrolijk_21:

We made it!  Terrie and I had a room with a fireplace and it looked right out on to the lake.....very inviting.

In between the ski season and the summer season, we pretty much had the hotel to ourselves.  It was very nice....

But we did have a baby polar bear visit us.....    They told us this dog is only nine months old at 85 lbs.  The hair was very soft but he said it'll eventually start twisting and ends up looking like dread locks.

Here's a cabin that he's currently framing.  He leaves the outside pretty much original, frames the inside, new sheetrock and then wallpapers to look old (sometimes with old news print)...

Van, here's that COE that you were looking for.....and it's a quad cab. ;D

Obviously......living way out there, mileage was important back in those days, also...

Room with a 360* view....

I'll post more later.......have to take a break.

Sherriff Stone checking on the ladies of the evening.........or not. :huepfenlol2:

a couple of the old mines that made this town what it was back in it's day.  Mines are all over the place up here....many, many, many of them!

and moving along to modern times.....

The cook shack.....(they have large groups that come out here and spend a week at a time.  Off road clubs, ATV clubs, and then there's the movie crews when they come to film, etc.)

The saloon....

I believe he said it's a 1909 Brunswick pool table....

and an old player piano that played very well.

another photo of Sandy.....

Terrie playin bar keep.  Had to get somebody that doesn't drink so the profits weren't all drink up. :huepfenlol2:

Watch out for the stuff in the bottle with no label.  They said the town was full of spirits......they're in the bottle, too!   :o   Hey, he can do what he wants......it's the wild west.  Besides, he's the sherriff too! :P

They said you don't want this stuff in a shot glass....just a thimble full will do...... :drink:

We were up early Sat. morning.  Had breakfast and then headed out to Scotty's Castle and other places in Death Valley.

We stopped about a mile out of Gold Point and emptied a few clips....

A true oasis in Death Valley.....Scotty's Castle

Our tour guide, dressed as a reporter of that time....

Awsome wood work and iron work on the hinges and other hardware.....

the living room....

The ceiling in the theater....

The silent movies would be shown on a screen up on the stage.  The wood work panel is actually a front for the pipe organ that would play during the silent movies being shown.....so the sound would come from behind the screen.

A close up of the pipe organ wall with all the pipe vents closed.....

and here is a pic of the organ actually playing, showing the pipe vents open.  Each cord or note opens and closes various pipe vents.....very interesting to watch it while the organ is played.

Scotty's Castle was very interesting and we're glad we took the tour. :2vrolijk_21:

Death Valley has some pretty interesting roads if you get back in off the highways....

Furnace Creek is 190 feet below sea level.....

Yes, we paid $6.019 per gallon.  Some of us only bought one gallon to get us to a station where we could get it for under $5.00 a gallon.  But a couple of our group filled their tanks. :nervous:   Probably pretty safe to say the most expensive gas in the US is in California. :nixweiss:

These guys are riding from Alaska.  He was reading a Subaru driver the riot act for passing the bikes on a double yellow on a curve/hill, endangering everybody's lives.

Borax wagons minus the twenty mule team....

and Death Valley's own Sahara desert (sand dunes)....

Oh, I forgot to mention.....Richard (rbaker on this forum) caught rode up from Ariz. to join us.  He caught up to us at Furnace Creek.  Here we are at Stovepipe Wells.

Terrie's ready to go.  She's a real trooper riding on the back (she had surgery on her hand last Tue) and didn't complain at all.  Matter of fact, I think she said she liked it. ???  But that red helmet's really messing up my blue. :(

Whoaa......90F! :o   It's time to roll up outta this hell hole....

Thanks for the tour JC, looks like it was a interesting ride. Scottys Castle was a neat looking place, what was it originally built for? Someone invested alot of cash. Thanks again for taking us along. Hope to join you all soon.  :2vrolijk_21: Jon

Shopping for a battery for the FOB and a Lake Tahoe Pin for the GTG vest.  Snow flurries.

Andy, Sherie, Carole and I stayed at the GTG famous Lakeside Inn. Parked under cover in case of weather.  While leaving the next morning were told we’d have to move by security.

Heading down the Ice-Free but very cold Kingsbury Grade.

My camera aim sucked and I did not get a good picture from Kingsbury Grade.

Lot of flat, wet ranch land at the eastern foot of the Sierras.

I like the eastern side of the Sierras for the steep majestic views.

Waved through.

CLOSED!

Now they’re just rubbing it in.

Living in the city makes us appreciate the rural scenery that many on this site take for granted.

Cutting in the road work wait line. Guy in silver pickup didn’t like it!

He did a good job of keeping up for about 30 minutes. Probably had to clean up the kids vomit after about 30 minutes of curves.

Spring has arrived, time for the Tar Snakes to come out.

Silver PU still there. The silver Subaru with the bikes on top went around us going down into the Mono Lake basin doing about 100 mph.

No, GREAT picture's to Russ and JC  :2vrolijk_21:  Thank you again guys for another "wish I was there" riding report. That first day when you woke up and it was freezing, now that might have sent me back home but the rest of the trip was outstanding  :P

Even at 16F degrees, the Gerbing eXtreme Element XE heated gear along with the Gerbing heated boot insoles are more than enough to keep you comfortable. :2vrolijk_21:

The temps looked to have been pretty extreme, can you guys tell us more about the temperatures while riding and what your temperature expectation was when youi left home.

No, not extreme.......just a low of 16F to a high of 90F........just about what I'd posted ahead of time in the Event Chatter board.  We'd been following the forecast the week prior to leaving so it was about what we'd expected.  Extreme for us is when it gets up in the triple digits since 112F-115F is normal in Death Valley in the summer months.

My motor or my body doesn't understand that.  115F is 115F wet or dry. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

And yet another awesome journey for others to measure up to...As I was reviewing these photos, the thoughts of the terrain, weather and other elements I was thinking that this could be called the trip from heaven to hell...WOW!

Thanks for sharing the experience...
