'05 SEEG Oil Temp Gauge replacement kit
« on: December 15, 2006, 02:19:50 PM »

Just a word to the wise to those folks looking to replace that worthless ambient temp gauge with the new dash mounted oil temp gauge kit that features the billet aluminum face...

1.) The gauge is really neat and looks great!
2.) Its quite nice to have an oil temp gauge on a SE because they run so hot anyway.
3.) You should know going in that if you install the factory plumbing kit, your chrome oil supply line cover will NOT fit back on and there is no factory cover that will due to the hydraulic clutch line.
4.) They don't bother to tell you point number three until AFTER you buy the guage kit.
5.) The plumbing portion of the kit (the oil line "T" specifically) is absolute junk and should be thrown in the nearest river ASAP.
6.) The kit works fine and the original factory chrome cover can still be used if you place the sending unit in the oil sump rather than the oil supply line.
This makes for a much neater installation, works just as well and allows you to keep all your chrome.  Necessary fittings will need to be purchased from Home Depot or Lowes but they are readily available.  Even allows you to use the sending unit that comes with the kit.

Welcome IndyMP.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Yes there has been lots of discussion about the oil temp gauge and placement of the sensor sending unit in the extra oil pan plug. The factory reccomended way is a bad idea.

Indy,

There is a very long and winding thread on that topic.

.... and there have been four with the accessory oil temp gauge (that I can remember) who have had a failure of some sort.  It's also not a precise appearance match to the other small instruments.

Hmm, hadn't read about the failures here. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Well, I was gonna get one if they ever got it matched to the other gauges, but I guess I will redirect the funds elsewhere if they're not matching and[/i] failing. :-/

Brian-

You should be ok if you get an oil temp gauge kit now.  In the beginning, the MOCO had at least 2 and maybe 3 different gauge styles for our bikes.  My original gauge kit came with a gauge that did not match very well and worked for about a month and quit.  With help from this board (GRC and others),  it was diagnosed as a bad gauge.  The new gauge has been in for several months and matches the other qauges exactly EXCEPT there is not a stop for the hand at the bottom LH of the gauge when engine is cold or ignition off.  Doesn't bother me at all.  Up to 180 degrees, the gauge is off 15-20 degrees compared to my digital gauge (low).  Once the thermostat opens at 180 and oil goes thru the oil cooler, the readings are about 5 degrees off from 180 and up.  I would do it again.

Does that oil dipstick temp/level gage work? It sure seems a lot easier. And you can use the opening in your fairing for that Turbo Boost gage one day!

Gary, sometimes you just have to man up and take the risk.  I'm sure Mike would warn me if she's on the way (at least I hope so!).

You've been single to long. A man is going to have to do what he has to do. Besides you just said she was mean, whose side do you think he's going to be on? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
