14 SGS to 15 SG CVO, I must be crazy
« on: September 08, 2014, 02:53:11 PM »

well, color me crazy but I am thinking about trading in my 14 SGS with a bunch of mods and only 2k miles, to a 15 SG CVO.  It looks like a would take a bath.  Dealer is offering me $21k for the SGS and MSRP on the CVO.
If anyone has some insight into the fair trade in value I would appreciate it.
As for color, I am thinking the silver.  It certainly pops with all the flake, but I am a little on the fence if it is too much.  Anyway, thanks for your input.

Instead of trading right when the iron is hot, how about waiting a bit to let things cool down and get what you want a bit down the road.  May try selling your '14 SG Special, holding on to the money and then finding what you want on your terms, not the dealers.  You would lose a bit on the tax advantages with trading but not near as much as your loss on your '14 in your current trade in offer.  You could also wait a bit to trade if trading is the only option and take the chance of losing less on your '14 at that point...again when the initial influx of the '15 interest has diminished.
Of course, if the bug has bitten, sometimes the only way to settle the discomfort is to scratch it no matter how much it bleeds (a graphic metaphor but fits)

I agree, you may even be able to convince them to swap the pipes from your SGS.

As far as the amp taking up space: BFD! If you need that extra space put more crap in your pants pocket because that is about the amount of space they take. Sheesh! I swear to the heavens we can come up with more reasons to gripe than any group I have ever met...at least those who stand up to pee. If you like the bike and financially you can swing it then just enjoy and quit listening to Dave Ramsey.  He is going out of this world with just as much as a homeless person. I work in a geriatric field. Believe me life is short. Play hard. Spook.

All your thoughts and opinions are great and helpful, a dose of reality one may say. Yes, I chase the latest. You are so right saying I don't ride an awful lot, but I do enjoy it. Is it worth to upgrade from a pure $$ point, no it's not. I'm on the fence, leaning, but still on the fence. I think I will take a few months and let the emotion fade away and see how I feel towards the end of the year.

Your bike's only a yr old with 2k miles, so I can't imagine not taking a bath on the trade.  BTW, was that a solid trade-in value the dealer gave you, or was it a sales guy "spit-balling?"  I've experienced salesmen having to eat their words once the sales process moved along.  If that's a solid offer, then good.  However:

Your trade-in:  21,000
Dealer asking price when they get your trade:  ??? (But you'd think at least 24k)
Price of unsold 14 SGS still in showroom:  21,000 (approx)

Am I missing something?  The numbers just don't work in favor of the dealer.

These bikes are toys anyway. I say go for it and enjoy. When I was thinking about getting my bike and was asking for advice most people told me to stick with the bike I had and I would lose to much money, I didn't need it, i was just making an emotional decision because I loved the looks of the bike, blah blah blah..
Bottom line is I obviously got it and have never (after I got over my initial buyers remorse..) regretted it and have loved every single minute of the 24000 miles I have rode it.
Smart, rational decisions don't go well with motorcycles (especially Harleys) in the first place...

BTW, was that a solid trade-in value the dealer gave you, or was it a sales guy "spit-balling?"

Its a solid trade in number.  I got it from the sales manager.  I have bought 2 bikes from him over the past years.  He is a solid stand up guy.  He says I may need to wait until March for the bike so we will see.

I agree with all your thoughts as you cant take it with you. I had a 12 SESG which I sold right when the 13's came out, so I got reasonably good value on that.  I am very happy with the SGS, but it is just not a CVO.  BTW, the SGS is up on Chopper Exchange.  we will see what happens.  Thanks again for all your input, it actually does help.

Like others have said if you can afford it go for it..

But you can do a whole lot of things to your current bike for $15K... motor, paint, chrome... but in reality that extra $15K for a CVO will end up being and extra $18K after pipes, a tune, and whatever you will want to do to it to make it your own.

I think if I had it to all over again I would probably buy a SGS and modify the H311 out if it....

Good Luck

I recall walking into my dealership to check on my ’11 RG Ultra, which was having Daymakers installed. I viewed the Tribal Orange FLHTCUSE8 on the floor, looked at the selling information and recall thinking ‘I’d never pay that much for a motorcycle’… Then I flew west on a business trip and thought about it more and more. I ended up making the deal over various phone calls, doing my best to hammer the trade and details. There are no great deals probably, but it got done. I could afford it and don’t have regrets.  Then I found the forum on line and started reading everything in the archives about the 110 engine – LOL. As an observation from your post T, I’d say you’ll be riding a 15 SG CVO soon enough. If it were me and it was important enough to promote so much thought I’d make the deal.

X2 Ken. Big whoop! I have an amp in my bag and after several trips and 18K miles in the last 2 summers I haven't even said when packing, if only this amp wasn't here I could fit this extra item.

Never noticed the amp....except when the double sided tape let go and the amp rubbed a hole in the saddlebag on Orlando trip a year or so ago.  Otherwise, once repaired/bag replaced, not issues.
Really, I use the saddlebags for riding essentials so as not to use them for packing on long trips.  Plenty of room in the saddlebags for those items (daily and trip related).  I've got a large HD bag to sit on the detachable rack for the clothes and such on a long trip....

.....getting back on subject and after revisiting my original post on this thread, I'm sticking with waiting for ya tlr.  Looks like you have motor-vated to that same conclusion.  Good luck on whatever path you choose.

I ride 2 up 90% of the time. That means my wife packs all of her stuff in addition to mine. We use a saddlemen on top of the tour pak for clothes and pack the tour pak with chaps, etc. We each have a saddlebag. We always have plenty of room to bring home stuff from trips.

It's laughable that Spook picks up on my amp comment based on a post that addresses a guy who was on the fence about trading a 14 SGS for a 15 CVO. Then, two others chime in who ride with tour packs and a bag on top of the rack. Last I checked, my bike has 2 saddlebags and I fit what goes in the bags only; otherwise, I'd get an Ultra.

So, unless you want to ride a bike loaded down to the T with your gear, I travel quite a bit with lightweight camping gear and layer clothing and use the space that exists within my bags, not adding travel packs, bungee cords, etc.

The main issue was the cost to the guy if trading. As I said at first, if you have the money, it doesn't matter; otherwise it made no financial sense.

If you're buying the CVO SG for a bar hopper, wth do you care about bag space for anyway????

I agree with that as well.  for longer trips I put on my pillion and backrest and throw my backpack on the back.  issue solved, for me anyways.  I did look in the bag and you do give up space.  to me it looked about the same about of space as a standard (not stretched) saddlebag.  all good.

If you have a boatload of money, like some of the respondents so far, then why worry about it?  If you are a mere mortal like most, and eating a significant loss would hurt the family budget, then I'd suggest doing what's right for the family as a whole, not just what makes you happy for the moment.  I've seen too many people get carried away by the inability to be satisfied with what they have, be it bikes, cars, homes, girlfriends and wives, whatever.  Since I don't know you or your situation, I can't pretend to have a solid recommendation for you, and neither can the other strangers on the site.

This 2015 CVO Street Glide dealer quote was provided today: (Yellow/Black)

$36,349.00 (Apparently the original msrp was lower for some colors $35,499), but recently raised across the board-dealer caught this, this morning
300.00 (Dealer Processing Charge-not required by law-this fee depends on your state)
      435.00 (Freight Charge)
      465.00 (Dealer Prep Charge)
226.00 (Tag/Title/Transfer/Lien Fees=will vary based on your state)
1,118.94  (Tax, based on $18K trade for a '14 SG w/ABS and Security[bike is not a SG Special] w/13K miles and counting)

Total Price $38,893.94      '

Some thoughts: Please provide some honest feedback/suggestion to the forum

My pet peeve is the Dealer Processing Charge and Dealer Prep Charges. Agree/Disagree?

Service:1K break-in which will set you back $300.00 or so; and $300+ every 5K miles thereafter while under warranty if dealer serviced 2 yr/24K warranty--5 dealer service visits if you ride the warranty limit in 2 years)

The tax figure (6%) listed above is based on the difference between line 1 and 2 and $18K trade value; tax rate will vary (based on your state law-higher or lower tax rate);

Refundable $500.00 Down payment to hold

What are your thoughts? Feedback? Haggling? Deal you got?

Can someone share what they paid as outlined above? Real figures they paid/are paying.

What are you paying for a extended service plan (ESP) on a new bike---I have never purchased this in the past. What does it cover? I am not a fan of warranty plans, but you may be?

The consensus favorite color seems to be the Hard Candy???
I say if you can swing it, jump all over it and enjoy! I assume you are not buying it to be your only mode of transportation but your toy/hobby/passion like most of us so don't worry about what other people think or say, just enjoy every part of getting such a beautiful bike and go ride the he-- out of it!

Well, it's official.. I decided to be even more broke. I'm getting an amazing deal from Dillon's in Omaha, NE.

They're giving me a trade difference of $15,000 on my 2013 SG with 13,500 miles on it  (has a bunch of extras as well) for a 2015 SG CVO Black/Gold. I get it for $36,204 and I also get a matching detachable king tour pak, matching passenger cvo boards, SERT, my exhaust off my old bike for no extra $$$. Couldn't hardly believe it when I left as I had almost no plans of inking a deal.

Should deliver on 10/3.

That seems like a crazy good deal for you. Who did you deal with there? Maybe I'll give them a call.

Funny.. i called them the other day and the salesclown i spoke to had no idea when they would get a cvo or what color it would be. He could have cared less about setting anything up. It goes to show how valuable a good salesman can be.

just to close the loop on this as I am sure many of you have had a restless night over this.  The deal is done.  I wound up selling my bike online, found a great guy to give her a good home.  I did do a deal for a Ultraviolet Blue (couldn't they have given the color a better name).  it should be in next week.  I am pretty darn excited and can't wait to pick her up.  Thanks for all the responses and thoughts. They were all good.

We can't take it with us,,,, if you can swing it, go for it.  Good luck what ever you decide.    Stuart

Truth is, you can't build this bike for what you can buy it for.  In that sense, it's a good deal. The dealer near me builds exact replicas of the bikes in the parts catalog every year....and puts them on the floor for $40k with the 103 motor...and people actually buy them???

Should deliver on 10/3.

So, this dealer is allowing you $21,204 for your '13 SG and thowing in the following:
Color matched King tour pack which is, I'm assuming, ready to use (keyed lock to bike key, backrest pad, etc) along with the detachable mounting bracket.
CVO boards (floorboards I'm assuming again) for the passenger.
SERT tuner (does it include the tune?)
The labor to transfer the exhaust from your '13 to the new "15
....and final deal (tax, title, prep, shipping, keys in your hand...OTD as it were) puts the deal $145 LESS than the MSRP on the '15 SESG....

Dang son, if they do follow through with that, you did very well IMO.  The accessories you list alone account for roughly $4,000 give or take $100 (I'm including dealer labor in that total for all these included items along with the tune and the exhaust transfer).  I want you negotiating my next raise......

Good for you and congrats on the new ride.  The UltraV would be my color of choice IF I were to be interested in trading.  Don't forget us when you do take delivery....post dem pics, brother.

Ha, thanks. Salesman has gotten a little squirly about deal since making it, but I'm just waiting for confirmed delivery date as it was bumped from 10/3. Still hoping it works out as it's an amazing deal.
