Passenger speaker volume
« on: September 07, 2015, 09:21:31 PM »

The passenger volume switch seems to have no effect on the audio volume... I have heard it only works for the headset volume, is this true?

On my 11.5 an all others that I'm aware of the factory installed PASSENGER volume control will only control the volume of the passenger's HEADSET. It will not control the audio volume coming out of the speakers.

That's why I installed an additional volume switch on the right speaker pod on my 11.5 and wired that switch in parallel with the volume control on the handlebars. It might be trickier to accomplish that with the new CANBUS bikes, but with some time and a schematic it can probably be figured out.

On my 2011.5 Ultra, I usually control the rear volume using the fader function on the radio... too loud, fade to front speakers, too quite... fade to rear speakers and turn up the volume so I can still hear the front.

I wonder what the logic was when the system was designed? Why not let the rear seater be able to tune the radio and change the volume? Doesn't make much sense to me, oh well. Thanks for the responses guys. Much appreciated.

It may have to do with a little 'safety' consideration toward the operator.  If I'm not in the mood for high volume, and want to concentrate on the road noises, my passenger will just have to suck it up.  Or, they are welcome to plug in their own headphones and source of music, so that I don't have to hear it.  But, only if they can still hear me if I pass back instructions over my shoulder without me having to repeat several times.

The operator of ANY motor vehicle should be the only one who controls the operation of said vehicle... passengers may make suggestions, but it's ultimately the operator that needs to focus on the responsibility that their passengers' safety is their responsibility.

I guess when looked at from a pure safety perspective, that makes as much sense as anything else.
