Title: Need help with Hardwiring Zumo
Post by: CHICO on June 14, 2009, 09:34:06 AM
I've been reading threads on installation of the Zumo GPS on various bikes - and I thought "should be easy enough", so I took my seat off and started to look for where I could wire this to and that's where I got stuck.

The HD Dealer I visited wasn't any help either.

I asked to purchase a 2008 service manual for my RK - he "looked" and said "no, don't have them but we can install that for you in our service department" - I bet they could - but I'm not going to spend $200 on something I can do in 20 minutes if I had the right information.

So, since I don't have a service manual and I am operating "blind".

Where can I hardwire this thing to?

Also, is there a way to integrate my left accessories switch so I can control power to the unit?

Thanks

David

not sure how different your 08 is from my 03 - but I ran down under the tank, to the Aux output (got a splitter from the dealer) and it is switched off the ignition

not home, so I can't send pictures - but can when I get home tomorrow

Is the AUX output easy to identify?

I found a red wire with a protective covering.  I took it off and use my multimeter to find that it was putting out 12V.  But the ignition was off so I wasn't expecting to see any power draw.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

I have and open Deutch connector under the seat - the MOCO sells a splitter for it.  Makes two out of the one.  I then tapped into that for my Zumo.

I am home, but back at work - PM me to remind me to take a picture, I have my bike apart right now for upgrades and it is all exposed.

Thanks Sean.

I found the Deutsch connector under the seat!  Once I knew what I was looking for, I found a couple of those guys.  But I'll use the one under the seat for my Zumo.

I'm going to call my HD dealer today to see if they have the splitter.  I like that idea so i can use it for another accessory if I like (that's the idea, right?).

If you can take pics - that would be great.

when you routed under your tank - did you have to remove your tank first?  Or did you just tuck in and tie wrap where you could?

Thanks again

the part number is in a posted here somewhere - will snap a few pics, been out of the house for a week and got home pretty late last night...so bear with me

someone else can find the P/N  (d00D??? - think it was Twolane who found it for me last time)  but yeah it is so you can run more then one thing off the switch - I also have my heat drop coming off that so I can turn the heat in my Gerbings off and on via the switch on the triple tree

Sean:

I found the part number from your original post "AMP Multilock Connector Source" - http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=20609.15

70264-94A

did you end up cutting off one plug and soldering your connections together?  That's what I'm thinking of doing - instead of buying the crimp tool and making my own end.

thoughts?

I did, I cut off one of the ends and did the solder/shrink tube thing - its pretty clean and reversible if I want to for the cost of another adapter.

Okay- another newbie dumb question

I really don't feel up to taking my gas tank off and all that goes into it...so where did you run your wires?

i don't know if the garmin power cable is heat rated (if there is such a thing) so I'm not sure where I should route it.

Sorry for the dumb questions.

thanks again

Okay - I've gotten brave.

I went ahead and removed the bolts holding the center console on the tank and gently lifted that up, so I could feed my power through that channel - which then follows the electrical under the console straight down to where the AUX point is - tomorrow I will (after i buy a new 15A fuse that I blew today - oops) identify which pins are which and hook up the Garmin hot lead to the Harley Hot lead and the Garmin ground to one of the ground pins on the connector.

I've got my soldering iron, my heat shrink and I'm ready to get this project DONE!

I'll post pictures tomorrow of the progress so far and what I've done.

Thanks Sean for all of your help so far!  Stay Tuned - I still may have a question or three :-)

2 Words.... Cigarette Lighter

It's 12 volts, low amped, fused, keyed on power, and most of all, easy to get to.

I did the same - cover off, front and back bolts on the tank loose and lifted it, supported it with some 2 x 4 scraps I had. (have since made a QD line and can take the tank off all the way easier now).

Fished the line down the harness runs and tied it in under the seat.

Here's the finished product.

I woke up this morning at 5:30am - had a cup of coffee and went out to the garage in my sweats and flip flops (I know, not the safest work gear) - and began my soldering task.

For anyone reading this for help - make sure you put the heat shrink tube on the wire BEFORE you solder it - take your time and don't rush things.

I ran the Garmin power cable down through the top (see pics) by my handle bar lock, then up through the center console of my Road King that sits on the tank along the channel where other power is run for speedo, ignition, etc. (see pics)  This put me right under my seat where I could connect everything up.

NOTE:  I did my soldering away from my bike - I didn't want to risk any solder dropping on the bike at all so I did it on the garage floor.  (Since I didn't cut my garmin power cable, I had enough length to drop it to the floor to do my solder work).

I confirmed the pins I wanted (to the left accessory switch), cut one of the ends off of the Y-Cable (Part#72064-94A) so i still have a stock duetsch female connector for other accessories in the future (use the existing rubber cap to plug the remaining connector to keep any debris from entering).

Stripped the wires I was connecting to my Garmin and soldered hot to hot, ground to ground.

NOTE:  Before you slip your heat shrink over your solder joint - VERIFY your accessory works.  Its a lot easier to "re-do" your work without having to deal with the heat shrink material over your joint.

Once everything was confirmed to work  just as I had hoped, I slipped my heat shrink tube over my solder joint and used my daughter's hair dryer to heat it up to get a good seal.  I guess i could have used a candle or a match too - but I didn't want to risk burning it.  Hair dryer took a lot longer but worked nonetheless.

All that was left to do was tidy up the excess wire and tuck everything nicely away.

Sean: thanks man for your help and support...seriously I don't think I would have been able to get this far, this fast without your assistance.

Here's a top view showing where I routed the Garmin power.

This is where it came out and you can see that I routed it up - not under the tank but under the center console.

In the previous post, I tie wrapped (after the pics were taken) the wire so it is as hidden as possible and protected from getting cut when the bike is parked and handlebars are locked left.

In this pic, it shows where the line comes out at the bottom of the tank.

I went along the frame, under the tank the entire way - used a long wire tie as a puller and got it pretty much along the harness the entire way...but I had loosened up the tank to the extent that the fuel crossover would let me.

This pic shows the Y-cable that is connected, the one female connector remains un-used.  The "cut" wires are the ones not controlled by the switch.

Where is that on my Road King?  Good to know for the future if I can get to it up front.

Where do I get that?  I looked at that pic just now and thought the same thing...that just looks clunky.
