Question 2 bag protectors/crash bars
« on: March 04, 2013, 05:45:57 PM »

I want to put rear saddle bag crash bars on my 2013 CVO road glide. Would hate to scuff up the nice custom paint if the wind blows too hard. My wife is short 5 feet dealer say she will be uncomfortable with the standard crash bars in place and recommended the comfort bag guards. Price how ever on the comfort guards are $400 (with all the mounting hardware) way steep for what they are. Any experince/thoughts?

To help your wife clear the standard bars you could raise the passenger pegs/boards.

I've had 5' passengers on my bike with the standard crash bars and I've yet to hear any complaints (about the bars  ;) ).

The make the standard crash bars and now a set set of slated crash bars called comfort saddle bag guards. The new guards are $180 but they don't mount the same as the old gaurds and required additional mounting hardware at $102 per side. Grand total $384. Thing is I don't think I like how they look. May make sense to raise the foot pegs as suggested.

I had the comfort guards on my 03 FLH so my daughter could reach the floorboards. Once I raised the boards it was never an issue so now on the Skunk I am putting on the standard guards to protect the bags from her little boots.

The comfort guards are more expensive since they are sold in the catalog with the intent of replacing the standard front guard and reusing all the lower bag support bars and hardware. Unfortunately on a bike like a StreetGlide or our CVO RGs we don't have the same bag supports and need all the extras.

You might be ok with your RG given that you have a low seat height. If you put on a taller seat it might be a different story. Just remember . . If mama ain't happy......... :2vrolijk_21:

Is this what your dealer is trying to sell you for $400?

That $179 price is just for the actual guard bar, not the support hardware.  And the support hardware that comes with the bikes that don't have guards standard will not work with the guard.

"FLHX, FLTR, FLTRU, FLTRX, FLHRSE5, FLHXSE/2/3, FLTRSE3 and FLTRXSE/2 models require separate purchase of Saddlebag Supports P/N 49194-09 and 90781-09, Nut P/N 7531 (Qty 2) and Antenna Mounting Bracket P/N 76516-09"

The MSRP prices for the supports and antenna bracket are as follows:
49194-09A    $101.00
90781-09A    $101.00
76519-09      $10.10

Anyhow, I've had the comfort version on the SEEG for about six years and personally think they look better than the old original square style.  To each his own.  Either version will help protect the bags from a fall over about the same, but if you want to use the bar to help put the bike on a center stand (or pick the bike up after a fall over), the square style is easier to use as a hand-hold.

I haven't been out to look but if you have the 4 point detach kit you might not need the antenna relocation stuff.

It will work better for protecting the front edge of the lids. I always had to buff mine when I had the comfort bars.

Mounted a set of standard rear chrome guards today. Easy and cheap. I scored a free set off a 2011 Road King that the owner wanted to remove to make look like a SG. Picked up a pair of bolts for under the seat and had mounted unless than an hour. I like it when things work like that!  :2vrolijk_21:

Well, my thought is that $400 is a lot cheaper than buying a new color matched saddle bag.  You're going to drop it eventually, most likely it will be a 'soft' drop and it will rest on the front crashbar and floorboard.  No harm - no foul.  But, if it goes over a little harder it's going to cost you some $$.  I learned this lesson the hard way with my 2011 RGU.  I put my foot on a greasy spot on the pavement when I stopped on an off ramp and went over very quickly.  A new saddle bag and latch - with 20% off - was still around $250, and the scrape on the side of the fiaring was still there.

The color matched saddlebag for your CVO is a lot more than $200.
