Title: Evo Hoist Bobber! A New Build From Old Parts!!!
Post by: Hoist! on December 30, 2008, 05:28:39 PM
Well, the Hoist Bobber began mock up today. The old 80" hot rodded Evo motor and 4-speed trans from my '85 FXWG are now sitting in the new Paugho Rigid Frame I picked up. Got a nice peanut tank that I'll have them "Frisco" to get the bottom of the tank to follow the lines of the frame. Round oil tank with built-in battery tray. Fatboy wheels F&R with the same Conti 16"s on both. Complete original WG fork from the FXWG, with the original levers and front brake. 8" Flanders Bars on 6" risers. Reusing the old Girling caliper for rear. Buddy's fabricating a "cutoff" rear fender for it. Want to run a solo seat on this one. No jockey shift Mike.  This bike will be getting completely mocked up so welding of any tabs, etc can be done before sending the frame out for powdercoating. This bike can easily be done by spring if they can stay at it. :2vrolijk_21:

Yeah, I know,  :worthless: ;D ;D ;D

Binx left with the camera before I got to see the Hoist Bobber mock up. So pics will have to follow now. Oh well, something for ya'll to look forward to! ::) ;)

Well believe it or not, the mock up's mostly complete. Hopefully can get pics on Sat. We have to order 3-1/2" shorter fork tubes for the WG front end. The frame's basically a stock 30 deg rigid wishbone frame setup for an Evo. Also, I can't find a round oil tank with a battery box small enough to fit. I'd need about a 4" round one and the smallest one I found was 5". Looks like I'll have to use the Horseshoe Style. Bummer! Kinda had my heart set on a round spun alum oil tank. And I need an FXE size battery in this bike for the electric start. No place to put one but under the seat in the oil tank. I'm not going kick only either just to get the round tank! Bates style Diamond Pleated Charcoal Grey Metal Flake Bobber Seat with 2 Billet Coil Over Shocks on the rear of the seat w.hinged front! Might save my back a lil grief! No controls at all. A car type spring-loaded keyed ignition switch for the starter, a "bulb type" bicycle horn, front master cyl perch and clutch perch w/levers only-no controls, no signals, no speedo or idiot lights, and bicycle style Charcoal Grey Metal Flake handgrips. This will about as old school and stripped down as I can get it, while still having a battery, electric start, and hydraulic disc brakes.

I'm thinking to powdercoat the frame Black, and maybe have the tank and chopped rear fender match the Charcoal Grey Sparkle Seat. No front fender. Youze got any ideas on paint for it? I'll listen. Just don't be surprised if it winds up Rattle Can Flat Black! ;D ;) :2vrolijk_21:

Rattle can is good, I know someone who only uses weber grill paint...That way when or if details it (washed in the rain), he can spray it all..

Or stupid amounts of flake, and engraving...hard to say what goes for a bob...I know it will be right for you!   :2vrolijk_21:

Can't wait for the pics...

Thanks Gary, yes I did. Russel's site says he makes on to fit with electric start, but check it out!

OB15 'electric start' oilbag, 15" width, 7" diameter, 5.5"x3.7"x4.7" deep battery box $699
OB15 has clearance on the underside to clear the electric start. Both ends are fully round, but some clearancing of the lower left side of the oilbag may be necessary to clear the starter nose on your primary. This part of the oilbag contains no oil and can simply be filed into shape for a perfect fit for your project. Oilbags are internally plumbed allowing all three lines to exit at the lower rear right-side of the bag, perfect for running the lines under the transmission end cover to the oil-pump. From left to right (of bike) the outlets are RETURN, FEED, VENT. Oilbags are supplied in a ready-to-paint raw state.
Additional charge to polish oilbag $40
612089 Oilbag mounting bushings (4) $25
492700 Outlet fittings, straight (3) $15
58-1322 Yuasa YTX20HL-BS -fits OB15 $99

 :vrolijk27: :vrolijk27: :vrolijk27: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

This is an extremely low budget build. For that $$$, I'll live with a Horseshoe Tank! ;)

Run the round oil bag and hang the battery on the outside of the frame in a artillery shell box. This is a Bobber, no need to hide anything. Stick the battery in front of the motor.......

Nah, the only spot Vern thinks it'll look decent is on the left side, built out on the frame in the rear by the wheel. He's put them there before. But I agree with him, it'll look a lil hokey. I wish there were room on the frame bottom, behind the trans. But not with kicker style frames! Thanks Mike! :2vrolijk_21:

HeHe!!! Find some room Gary. Vern's built many of these in the last 20 years. He told me my options. I spent hours coming to the conclusion that there's no reasonable option but the Horseshoe!

Paughco
Wishbone Rigid Frame
for 4-Speed Big Twins
True Old-School Bobber for Pan, Shovel and Evo Engines!

High-quality frame accommodates any Big Twin engine except Twin Cam 88
including strokers and Evolution motors, with 4-speed transmissions and
chain final drives. Necks have a stock (30) rake and no stretch in the front
down tubes.
This is true old-school bobber.

Frame includes a Manufacturer s Statement of Origin (MSO) for registration.

No seat post. Lift, stretch, rake is irrelevant. It is UNDER the bike, UNDER the trans. There isn't anything under there but space.

Swing over to chopperweb.info and look around. There are as many Bobber projects there as there are CVO's here.  ;D

Under the Frame?? How far into the frame can you tuck it in underneath? I'd prefer not to have a battery below the frame line riding thru this potholed city! :nixweiss:

I'll look and see if I have a side shot of either of mine done this way. The battery is tucked up tight against the bottom of the trans plate. Since transmissions use studs I remove them and use bolts that I countersink into the bottom of the trans plate (Redneck did the frst one for me). The battery tray itself has holes in it and is bolted to the trans plate. I use standard Softail batteries from a Twin Cam.

Does it protrude below the frame at all that way? :confused5:

The short answer is NO it does not hang below the frame. My battery tray is dead nuts flush with the frame.

Measure a battery and than the distance from the bottom of your frame rails to the bottom of the trans mount.

Checked out my buddy's wishbone frame tonight! NO FRIGGIN WAY TO PUT A BATTERY UNDERNEATH WITHIN THE FRAME! Them original HD wishbone frames were never made for electric start. That battery would hang below the frame rail by at least half the battery depth! And the bike's very low as it is. I think I'm done thinking about this and am OK with the Horseshoe tank. Vern was at the party and pointed out all the obstacles on my buddy Leroy's Panhead, to doing what I was hoping for with the OT. There's a cross member below the trans on these frames too, preventing you from locating a tank there. Maybe you chopper guys with modified or aftermarket chopper frames can do this OK. But it ain't happening on a HD Wishbone frame! Thanks for trying to help. ;) :2vrolijk_21:

My last chopper project was a Paughco wishbone replica frame. It was set-up to work with Evo Softail parts. I used a Milwaukee Iron oil tank like the one you're talking about, a rebuilt RevTech 100" motor with a Del'Orto dual throat and an Ultima 6 speed. 85 Anny H-D Bad Boy Springer front end (complete with brakes) , 5 gallon flat side tanks and 40 spoke wire wheels. 12" apes on 4" risers. Fitting the rear brake was a bit of a bitch as was lining up the drive train. I was in process of buying the primary guts when the CVO site member selling them to me flat out disappeared. Twolane and I were never able to find out if he passed away or what.(hd_tex ?)  Anyway, I got stuck in neutral during that wait for parts period and ended up selling the 75% completed project to an old bro in Maine about 18 months ago for the $7,500 I had in it. He bought the primary guts, starter, wiring harness, a sprung solo seat, flat rear fender and strut and a set of Paul Yaffe X-Pipes (blacked out shotguns with chome heat shields that look like a 50 Cal gun barrel) from JP Cycles. Those were the only new parts to my knowledge. He claims he's only got $11k in it complete. Next time you're up my way at the lake in Maine, we'll go hunt the guy up. I haven' seen it finished myself.

MI doesn't show an OT w/Battery Tray either. Like I said, Vern's already been thru this a buncha times already, and the bike is now mocked up w/the Horseshoe. Too bad you had to give that project bobber away. I'd love to go check it out w/ya this summer though! :2vrolijk_21:

Appreciate everyone trying to find a small OT w/Battery Tray! Now we can continue with the build. Yesterday's scramble was because Vern went to town on this thing the last 2 days, and I didn't want to hold up the process. But didn't want to settle til I was convinced there was no other options. Well, I'm convinced and we'll move forward from here! Thanks gang!!! :huepfenjump3:

I'll work my way over to the shop today, or tomorrow latest, to get some pics of the mocked up Hoist Bobber! Can't wait to see what it looks like now. I'm not convinced I'm keeping the 16" FB wheel up front though. Might put a 21 on there instead. I'll have to see what she looks like after we get the shorter fork tubes in. I'm sure ya'll will have plenty of suggestions after I get the pics up! ::) ;D :2vrolijk_21:

Interesting setup Pete! That frame is a different configuration than a HD wishbone. He had no room under the seat and had to get creative it appears. That frame also has room behind the tranny for a battery, which is where I thought I'd wind up putting mine. But there's no room for an electric start battery back there, just a kick-only battery. No offense, but I'm not crazy about that tank up front like that. Nice bike though! Thanks for the suggestion and pics! :2vrolijk_21:

You have some nice ideas there Mike. I first have to decide whether I'm doing a paint job, or just rattle can! Might just rattle can first, then decide after. Not much to pull a peanut and a chopped fender off! But if I do paint, I'll keep ya in mind. I like the idea of complimenting Cybil's paint! :2vrolijk_21:

So far, out of everything you see here, I had to but the frame, gas tank, oil tank, used front wheel and front rotor. Still need a rear fender, but there's not much more I'll need. EVERYTHING else came off my '85 FXWG, which is now completely redone CVO Stlye with a 110" Evo and a 6-speed, Traxxion, and PM! :2vrolijk_21:

So now we're figuring on what to do with the exhaust. The frame is a replica HD Wishbone frame, setup to fit an Evo. But that's all that's setup for the Evo. No provisions for mounting an Evo style exhaust. I'm using the old Cycle Shack M Pipes from my '85 FXWG. That uses a large rear bracket, which would normally mount to the frame and pick up both mufflers at the rear. This frame is nowhere close to allowing the bracket to attach to the frame. Vern's thinking of either welding it to the frame. But I'd rather not have it at all. So now he's looking at fabricating some tabs and brackets at the exhaust attaching points only, so ya barely see any mounting bracketry. I like that idea. :2vrolijk_21:

I think I like the 16" front wheel on it too. We'll make the final call after we get the 3-1/2" under fork tubes on it first. You can see with the bike in the air, how much lower the front wheel is compared to the rear. That's why we need the shorter fork tubes. Then it'll sit level, and nice and low! We still have to weld some tabs for the shocks for the hinged solo Jammer seat I'm planning on running on this. The gas tank's not setup yert. I want that "Frisco'd" up so the bottom is parallel with the backbone. But it's getting close now. After all the welding's done, we can take it apart and send the frame out for powder coating! Can't wait now!!! ;)

The bike cart's cool, huh Don! :2vrolijk_21:

Cybil's coming off the lift for now while Vern get's all the engine parts together and builds the motor. The Rigid will go up on the lift for the rest of the mockup. We still have to get the Jammer Bates style solo seat (and hardware, mounting tabs and shocks) and the 3-1/2 under fork legs and get everything set for all the welding of all the tabs, etc.

I'm not sure on them FB wheels either. I'm pretty OK with a 16 up front, not necessarily on a FB wheel. But I'm thinkin with the short WG front end, a 21 spoke might look really good up there too, maybe better. I can leave that rear rim on with it. It's actually not a FB rim, but an '87 FXLR rim. It's been on my '85 FXWG for years! We'll see!!! ;)

I thought about the wheel size thing. 18's are cool when ya run em F&R. Didn't want to go that route. Thought about a 19" on the front, but it's just not right on a WG. The 16" and the 21" are the 2 choices I like. And I have the stuff to go either route! ;)

Picture I get when I close my eyes seems better (to my tastes) with that idea.  It'll be a blast to ride no matter what.  For a Bobber that's all that matters anyway.  They have to look less than butt ugly and be a total blast to ride.

And if it goes rattlecan, it'll be rattlecan all the way. But I might have a friend paint it. (you met my buddy Joe Sal whose shop's in Astoria) Prolly just try to match the Jammer charcoal grey sparkle solo seat I want to use. Otherwise, prolly flat black rattlecan! Just got back from checking the progress on the HB bike. Snowing real good when I left. Still no ridin here for a bit. The rear fender's on, cut, and loosely in place. Same with the tank. We strapped the front fork down to see the look with the shorter tubes, but couldn't crank the strap enough to reduce the leg height by the full 3.5". There's still another inch shorter to go (you can see the electrical tape on the right leg showing where the full 3.5" shorter would be). But ya can get the general idea of the look. We're waiting for the Jammer Solo Sparkle Charcoal Grey Diamond pleated Seat and Seat Shock Absorber Kit (with the weld tabs for the seat pan and frame) to show up to finish all the tab mounting, and get it all weled up and out for powdercoating. I'm having a buddy paint the tank and fender the same Sparkle Charcoal Grey color to match the seat. It's coming along nice. It'll be the nicest 5 Grand bike I can build! ;)

If I mount a light switch and starter button the handlebars, it'll be the 2 on this page also.

Hoist,
She is so cool. Looking at that build really makes me wish that I had the means to build my own.
You decided on a color ! charcoal gray. I think you should consider some flat black ghost flames
on the tank  :2vrolijk_21: What ever you do that bike is truly you.

Thanks Joe! Funny you say that about the tank. I might do something similar with these Jammer Gas Tank Knee Pads (Small). That'll break it up al lil, and still allow me a cheaper, 1-color paint job. Then maybe some custom pinstriping, maybe a red. :2vrolijk_21:

I will however be able to keep any switches off of the bars. We're using this Jammer Custom Ignition Switch. Vern's making a bracket for it somewhere. It's a car type spring-loaded switch that uses the key to start, and is waterproof. The light off-low-hi switch will be a toggle mounted in the headlight housing. The horn is that Bulb type bicycle horn. No signals. No kill switch. Just the Brake lever perch w/master cylinder and an old school style throttle assembly on right, and Clutch lever perch and grip on left. I found a set of Charcoal Grey Metalflake grips online. I hope they match the seat OK. ;)

Thanks B B! Not really goin for that look per say, but that was the nicest cheap Tailight/License Plate Assembly I've seen. Most were them billet ones with catseye, iron cross, etc. tailights. Same old, same old. I thought this would be different, and go more with the bike's style than a modern billet piece! ;)

And Binx is a SAINT with all this. We've only been together about 7 years now, so she knew what she was getting into when she met me regarding this whole motorcycle thing. Unlike my ex! But it's great that she rarley objects. Instead, I just add more hours on her spa time!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

We all live vicariously thru others all the time. It's how we get ideas on what we want to do when we get the chance. Getting the chance is the key!!! This is my second ground built. The process is always fun, even though I don't actually build it myself. But my design, input, and involvement allows me to get almost as much satisfaction as turning the wrenches myself! ;)

Thanks Jeff! And thanks for the wheel! Funny, I was originally gonna run a speedo. After I got the wheel, I realized I can't mount a speedo drive with this sealed bearing wheel. An can't use an electronic pickup with the 4-speed either. Then I decided, STS!!! So no speedo now! Still not convinced I won't be switching to a 21" wheel. But as the bike goes now, it looks good with those 2-16's on it! :2vrolijk_21:

TODAY's UPDATE:

Well, the mockup phase is completed. I was called in to check it out and sit on it, before taking it apart for the final welding and grinding is done to the frame. I love the way it's coming out. Of course, nothing's without it's surprises. The Bates Style Jammer Metalflake Charcoal Grey seat is actually Metalflake SILVER!!! So guess what, the color scheme changed again. They showed me the powdercoat color swatches. They have an awesome color that resembles raw aluminum. Really cool color. Not quite silver. Not shiney or chrome like. Just like unfinished aluminum! So I'm doing that for the frame, and back to flat black w/red pinstriping on the tank and rear fender. HeHe!!! A Silver/Black bike!!! Now I have to find silver metalflake grips to match the seat. The grey ones I picked up, don't really go anymore! That tailight/licence plate assembly w/the vintage style old Ford pickup truck tailight is really cool, and will go perfect on this bike. :2vrolijk_21:

Also, with that solo seat mounted up there, my Flanders Street Bars on 6" risers, which were perfect on my '85 FXWG (shown here), are too short now on this bike. I'm gonna push them forward (straight up) and see if that does it. That look is cool on a Bobber too. If not, I'll go with 12.5" Flanders Original Apes with 4" risers, or maybe just go with 16" Flanders apes with 1" risers. Not sure yet, but it looks like I'll need at least 16" off the top of the upper tree, for the bars to be right, maybe even a lil higher! :o ;)

So it's now fully apart, the frame fully weldedfully welded, and they were grinding everything down when I left. It goes straight out to powdercoat in the AM. Cybil's parts are all in now, and her motor starts going back together on Mon! Very productive day all-in-all! :huepfenjump3:

And as usual, here's a few more progress pics! ;)

When I saw this photo it reminded me of a MV rally a couple of years ago where I ran into Click Baldwin on his Panhead Bobber. His machine was finished (or unfinished) in bare metal. He said that his crew would occasionally take a 3M scratch pad to the sheet metal to keep it looking good; maybe something to consider.  :2vrolijk_21:

Being a big S&S fan you might try finding one of the original sand-cast teardrop A/C covers with raised lettering. If you happen to stumble on to one of them, make sure you grab it. :idea2:  I believe that they quit making then in 1975.

HeHe!!! Funny you mention that dj! I talked with them about leaving it raw and letting it rust! Using a scratch pad to clean it up, and just let it rust from there as my paint job. Or using the scratch pad, then clearcoating it so that unpainted metal finish wouldn't rust. In the end, screw it! Rattle can black like I planned from the get go!!! And I love those old S&S covers too, but they don't mount on S&S Super E & G carbs, only the B's & D's I believe! ;) :2vrolijk_21:

That's the balls Howie. Wait til you fire this up and ride it. The gearing on the old 4-speed combined with a nicely massaged Evo makes for a totally unique power band. 100% BADASS BAR BLASTER. There's no way I'm not stopping in Queens on my way to Maine. I've got to throw a leg over this baby.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: Have you checked out Paul Yaffe X-Pipes ?

I only looked at stuff I didn't already have for this bike B B. The whole purpose was to use as many takeoff parts from from my other bikes to build this one. This entire setup came off my '85 FXWG just as you see it. These are the Cycle Shack M Pipes that came off the WG. So we welded mounts to the frame for them to get rid of the rear bracket. If I change exhaust now, it'll require rewelding new brackets on for another system, although any exhaust for an '85 FXWG should theoretically work. But I'm avoiding the temptation of sinking money into this bike. Just a fun exercise to build the coolest bike I could from a buncha spare parts! ;)

And I'm looking forward to having ya here. I'm sure you'll have a blast ridin that thing thru the City, just as I plan on doing myself with it!!! It'll be my new NYC Urban Hellriding Machine!!! :2vrolijk_21:

I understand what your plan was for this bike and I applaud your efforts to stick to it, but looking at where you're at now is fodder for a dozen ideas of how I'd finish it. The X-pipes for instance would look so cool with the style of bike. BUT, it's your bike and your vision and more importantly your (or perhaps Binx's) wallet  :D

On another note, for the entire 55 years I've been on this big blue marble, NYC has been something to be avoided. Even though I am a huge Yankees fan (People from Maine think NYC is the home of the Devil) I've either driven around it via heading through Danbury/White Plains on my way to Daytona from Maine or driven right through the middle (Cross Bronz Expressway) as I did on my way for Q's house to Maine last summer. I'm actually looking forward to riding into the belly of the beast and seeing what all the noise is about. Many many thanks for the offer of not only a place to rest my weary old bones for a night, but a guided tour and a hell of a bike ride with one of NYC's finest. Plan looks to be after the gathering on the 20th. I need to be in Maine by the end of April cause I have to turn around and drive to Ann Arbor for my daughter's Med School graduation May 7 Come to think of it, I need to start blocking out dates on a calendar or I'm gonna be a day late and many dollars short for the whole summer

That's sounds like perfect timing B B!!! You can meet us in York the weekend of the 18th. York Tour is on Mon, the 20th. We'd be back here in Queens that evening. We can have the party on Sat, the 25th, and you'll still have plenty of time to get up to Sebago, 6 hours away! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Damn, this is becoming a moving target. Turns out I can't get that Aluminum powdercoating for the frame that I wanted. Decided to powdercoat it normal gloss black. The painter's gonna look at the seat and see if he can match it. If so, I'll go with that matching dark silver metalflake on the tank and rear fender, and use the black knee panels from Jammer on the tank to contrast it. If matching the seat and paint is too much hassle or too much $$$, I'm done! Going back to my original rattle can black scheme! :nixweiss: ;)

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Well, the powdercoated frame was delivered to the shop by Action Powdercoating first thing this morning! As of now, the motor, tranny, front end (with the 3-1/2" shorter legs), oil tank, and who knows what else by now ARE ALL INSTALLED. Vern's going crazy with this thing! He's becoming an assembly menace!!! This bike's gonna be done before I know it! :2vrolijk_21:

Our local painter we use here (and friend), Freddy The Flame (who also did my '85 FXWG), said he'll match the Dark Silver Metalflake seat with the paint job for the tank and rear fender. Should be no more than 2 weeks he told Vern. I'm looking forward to all that metalflake on my new "oldster", the Hoist Bobber! Bike should be completely done within a few weeks now!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Bike's almost together. We're ordering a new clean top motor mount. Since there's no horn being mounted there, and mine's made for a horn and is 25 YO, we're putting a clean 2-piece chrome one on. Vern's making a bracket to mount the car style ignition switch on it too. The ignition switch will engage the starter like a car and also turn on the headlight, as I don't want any switches or wires on the handlebars. There'll be no kill switch either! He's adding a toggle there too for the high beam. The horn is a bicycle bulb type horn mounted on the handlebars near the left riser. So we're waiting on the mount and painted tank & rear fender. When they come in, the bike shouldn't take much more to complete! Can't wait to see it and show it to Neal tomorrow!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

WooHoo!!! Well, the bike's almost done! Waiting on the new top motor mount, and the painted tank & fender. The minimal wiring it needed is done. Everything is mounted except those items, and the ignition switch (which is being installed in a bracket in the top mount). Hopefully everything will get done by the end next week. I can then determine if I need to change bars, and to what. But this baby don't need much else! The way it looks right now, it's a race to see which bike gets done first, the Hoist Bobber or Cybil!!! Maybe I'll get em BOTH by the weekend after Super Bowl!!! :2vrolijk_21: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

HeHe!!! With them 10.5:1's and Sifton cam in there, I only kick it when the battery's down, or the starter breaks Craig! That baby likes kicking back! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: ;D ;D ;D :2vrolijk_21:

It kicks just fine! Gotta joke about something though! ;)

Howie I have heard lots of stories, but what was the worse "true" story you have seen on a "kicker"?
I have never seen anyone actually get hurt, only get exhausted and frustrated.
Do you have the ability to to retard the spark to prevent kick back?
I assume most problem comes when the sparks comes before TDC and engine kicks backwards.
I never had my bike kick back enough to be anything more than uncomfortable.
I have heard stories though, never knew if they were true.

You can fake it, hit the kicker, then release it really quick and hit the starter!  :D

Worst case scenario:  ratchet slips and your leg free falls to the concrete and you jam your knee, then when your frozen in pain the engine backfires and the kicker comes back and gets you again causing a huge hematoma on the back of your leg. :'(
I've got two "Sportster Knees" from this. When I ride my chop now I have my son come over to start it the first time, and it's a one kicker after that. Doc
