Title: TN to TN by way of NE, WY, MT, ID and SD
Post by: ultrarider123 on August 17, 2017, 10:28:36 AM
We had a great time!  Thanks to all of those that recommended staying at the Three Bears Lodge in West Yellowstone, MT.  It was a hoot (or would that be growl) and that town and location was perfect for visiting the park.  It really is just outside the West gate.  If you get a chance to visit Yellowstone or haven't been in a while, GO!  Beautiful country.  God's handiwork could be seen everywhere we looked.

12 days and just a hair shy of 4,300 miles

I was a bit surprised by the thermal activity all over the place.  I was expecting it around Old Faithful but dang, it's everywhere in the park.  Folks fishing in one part of a creek and not 100 yards away you have bubbling ground.  The Yellowstone lake is HUGE but folks swimming or wading at the edge with active steam pits across the road....eerie.  Also, walking on the boardwalks were fine but all the time I was thinking aren't these built on the same soil where there are signs for no walking/contact with chance of harm or death?  hmmmmm.... :nixweiss:

I've been on the Eastern edge of Nebraska but this was the first cross state trip.  I've seen my share of corn fields (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa) but Nebraska takes the cake (corn?).  I measured it out and after 200 miles, we didn't not see corn fields.  Glad we did it though.

I've been through the middle and NE part of Wyoming a few times now but never the southern or SW part.  First visit to Cheyenne, Jackson Hole and Cody.  Cheyenne is great, Jackson Hole is snooty (but beautiful country) and I wish we had a day or so for Cody just for the history.  We did get to eat in and visit the Irma in Cody during our brief pass through.

Pictures?  Yep, here you go.  First up is the sign in the front grassy area at Frontier HD dealer, Lincoln, NE dealership.  The second floor of the dealership is a must for those of us that enjoy HD history.  I hope they have a good fire suppression system 'cause they have some great pieces of MoCo history.

I wouldn't mind staying in the park but it's EXPENSIVE and according to the park ranger, August and September are two of their busiest months.

If you enlarge this photo, notice the top right of the falls.  There are folks right at the edge.  I've got a picture from there looking down into the falls a bit later.

Herd of buffalo.
Sure I've heard of buffalo
No dummy, a buffalo herd
What do I care what a buffalo heard.  I ain't got no secrets from a buffalo....(with apologies to Abbot and Costello)

Taken from a very safe distance....unlike some of the other humans that can't read OR choose to ignore the "WARNING, DO NOT APPROACH WILDLIFE" signs all over the park.

We purchased a new camera before this trip, Canon Powershot.  Just to show how good this thing is, take a look at this picture.  In the middle of it is a rock finger with a Osprey nest with two babies.

The two Osprey babies....

This was taken from the same spot as above but zoomed in really tight.....

We ended up using the Canon to scan for wildlife if we saw something off in the distance.  This wolf was playing around in an open field.  I'm eyeballing it at about 300 yards from us....

Yellowstone Lake.  It's a big'un.  I apologize for what looks like a wave in the middle of the picture.  It was windy, I was tired and I didn't do a good, easy sweep for the pano pic.

If you click and zoom, you can see the other side of the lake.  Not much activity on it boat wise, however.

I did note that they (Wyoming and Feds) have mandatory inspections of ALL motorized floating boat-type vessels prior to putting in the water.  Not that you would be pulling a motorboat/jet ski with your Harley, it's a good thing to know if you drive the Super Duty up there pulling your favorite watercraft.  Be prepared....no two strokes allowed of ANY sort (no wheels, two wheels or, if you drive an old Citroen, 4 wheels).... ;D

Ate supper here at the Yellowstone lake Inn.  Walked in and memories of "The Shining" and "Somewhere in Time" came flooding out.  Beautiful place and great food.

All things must come to an end.  We've got quite a few more pictures but most are similar to what I've already posted....no sense going any further.

This was taken upon exit through the East entrance side.  I'm overusing this word but, beautiful.

One more...I have to post this.  This is a parking area where the bubblin' ground has taken it's toll on the asphalt.  Enough so that they put a fence around it.  Scary place....

Brought back a lot of familiar sights, a fellow ought to go out there at least once in his tenure, it's a different world compared the packed out east coast.

Great memories, as my wife & I have ridden those parts many times, but it's been a few years - too long, and for the life of me I can't remember exactly where you took your "favourite pic" from?  Remember being there, just can't remember where, where is???  :nixweiss:

Thank ya sir. As for the Canon, it's already impressed me. I was the high school photographer back in the day (many moons ago) using an AE1. Loved that camera and most every Canon I've had since.
