Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person. Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2, totalling $29. Where is the missing $1?
:o
P.S. If you work it out don't post the answer for a while just to annoy folk for a bit longer.

There isn't a dollar missing, it is all there. Just don't get confused by the misdirection. Very clever problem.

Nice little brain teaser ;-)

C'mon Nige, enough with that English Math. If they gave him 30, and have 5 coming back, they gave 25. 25/3 = 8.333 each + 1 back each = 9.333 paid by each x 3 people = 28 + the 2 the bellboy kept = 30. I better do the math when you come here. I have a feeiling I'll be spending more than you on dinner otherwise! ;D My Math usually has me paying nothing at all! ::) Hoist! 8)

The $9.00 each guest finally paid includes the $2.00 the Bell Boy kept. Can't add it in again.
Manager $25.00
Guests $3.00 (3 x $1.00 ea.)
Bell Boy $2.00
Total $30.00
