Title: SEEG down in Mesa Verde, CO
Post by: Doc on August 22, 2006, 07:30:16 PM
OK...JCZ already knows that I went down, but here's the story.  See if you can tell the dumb decisions here.  Three bikes from west of Chicago driving to Durango for 4 nights of relaxation.  After night 1 in Durango, we were cruising around.  Yes, we were 1400 miles from home.  We got to the high point of Mesa Verde, stopped for pictures, and my buddy says, "This helmet I've been wearing for 1400 miles straight is chafing my head.  I'm stowing it."  I also thought about stowing mine, but didn't.  Within 10 minutes, we were both down on the mountain.  I was lead bike, and was taken out by an oncoming Lexus SUV that was cutting the line way too far.  We were going relatively slow, it was a mountain after all, but not slow enough.  Tried to "press harder" into my curve, but the rear broke loose (don't remember if I applied it at all, that would have been a dumb decision), and careened into the SUV front corner.  Worst place to hit it.  Well, the SEEG held up well, and was actually driveable, even with an estimated $11.5K damage.  Most painted surfaces were shot.  Front and rear fender were OK...all bags, fairings, and tourpak were shot.  I drove it back to Durango for the night, 35 miles...Well, my buddy saw what happened to me, locked them up, started going sideways, and released his rear, finding that high-side.  From the skids to the grooved pavement was about 5 feet that his bike flew...he might have gone a few feet further.  2 broken ribs, tons of rash, and of course, the dented forehead.  Right where his helmet would have been.  His helmet is toast too...protecting the backrest.  My helmet?  Not a scratch while on my head...Here's some photos...

Damn, Doc, from the looks of the SUV, you were pretty lucky. Easier to fix the bike than your body. Hope you and your buddy heal well (and buddy changes his attitude about helmets...find a comfortable one).
Did you have a chance to punch the suv driver in the shnozz? Was he/she on a damnable 'hell-phone'?

God bless,
Garz

Again, another reminder of "it's the other guy that we have to watch out for".......also, a good example of we're not able to get back over near as quickly as we'd like to think.

Doc, I'm damn happy that you're not in worse condition and happy that you made it back home alright.  Already told you that I'm praying for you but now I'm praying for your friend, too.  Get well bro!

Did they ticket the SUV owner?

OK...I'm back.  To those of you who asked, I actually got cited, because the Ranger couldn't show that the SUV had crossed into my lane.  Right before the collision, after I had started skidding, she had swerved back into her lane, where the collision occurred.  I wasn't too upset about it, until I got a copy of the accident report, which wasn't completed for 2.5 weeks.  The report was so inaccurate that I had to laugh.  This Ranger didn't have a clue what she was doing.  I'm a cop, and my report for this would have taken about an hour, and would have been done that night.  This one took 2.5 weeks and was BS.  She even put in the report that my buddy hit the SUV after leaving his bike.  Simply wrong.

Anyway...a silver lining to the story.  We are all healed up mostly, and my buddy who wrecked his Honda VTX (it was totalled) bought a Softail Deluxe that he had been eyeing for a while.  He never had an excuse to switch until the accident.  So I bought his first year to HOG and now we all ride Harleys...haha.

Sorry to hear about the Ranger and paperwork mess, but certainly glad to hear everyone is mended and that your buddy is on a Harley.

Thanks for the update and hope you can get some riding done before you lose the weather. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks for all the support, everyone!  I got my bike back 2 weeks ago.  Rode it home 40 miles in 29 degree cold.  But it was great!  They found a cracked tranny case when they got into the repairs.  So the guy calls me.  "Now would be a great time to put in the 6-speed."  Labor and case are paid for by insurance.  So I couldn't resist, and had it installed.  I loved the ride home.  My buddy (on his new Deluxe) and I went riding that weekend, and it felt great.  THanks again, and ride safe!

Total repair bill.....$13,500 plus $2200 for tranny.

Doc, happy to hear that you're back up and running.

I'm curious if you're contesting the accident report as it's written?

So sorry to hear about your accident.  You can always rely on the other guy cutting the curve to ruin your day.  You were lucky you weren' hurt.  You can't argue that helmets don't save lives and injuries but the fact of the matter is they do.  I know how hard it is in 100 degree weather not to take it off and I'm guilty of that myself.  I hope your buddy is doing good.  You'll love that 6 speed.

Cheers, Moe

Well...the three of us in this accident went out for our first ride together after the accident.  It was nice to get out and ride, have dinner, and talk.  We are all back in the saddle and being a little more wary.  Plus, my buddy has his Harley now.  So that's good.  Cya this summer on the road.
