S&S V111 EVO top end rings break in
« on: September 09, 2015, 09:13:08 PM »

Well the motor had been good over 60k miles. Tappet are still quiet.
The front cylinder base gasket is starting to push out, not leaking yet. The Bike is in the shop and they are going to do both cylinders.
Will replace the tappet too. With new rings on the honed cylinders,
What I'd the best Break in proceedure for the rings. The entire top end will be checked, valve seats and guides etc. Thanks

Drive it in a normal fashion, don't lug, don't spool it off.
Drop the oil/filter at 500 miles and let-r-loose then, if so desired.

Should I keep it below 2500 for the 1st 50 miles then under say 3200 rpm for remaining 450 miles? Vary speed a few hundred rpm every 3 to 5 minutes and gently backing off throttle now and then?
I have broken in new motors but never just a new top end rebuild with new rings. Cylinders were fine crosshatch still good.
Thanks

"The first 50 miles are most critical for new rings and piston break-in. Engine damage is most likely to occur during this period. Keep heat down by not exceeding 2500 rpm. Avoid lugging the motor, riding in hot weather or in traffic. Vary the engine speed. Do not lug the engine. We recommend changing the oil at 50 miles.

F. The next 500 miles should be spent running engine no faster than 3500 rpm or 60 mph. Avoid continuous steady speeds, and do not lug the engine. Vary engine rpm. We recommend changing the oil again at 500 miles. "
Source: S&S Cycle Break In Procedure.

Your mechanic should do several (3-4) heat cycles starting at 1 minute running time and ending no more than 4 minutes running time with cool down between cycles, before heading out.

Any update ?? as I just saw the pic and those pistons have a fair amount of blow by. You can see the burnt gase's down the piston past the rings.. Looks more like it needed a bore and hone with new pistons.

I cannot tell from here if an oversize piston is needed.
I'd clean/prep the pistons/cyls, measure the piston skirts, set a dial bore guage, and measure the bores in 3 locations, 90* from each as well.
VERY GOOD CHANCE that a hone with 400 stones/plateau,(in-house, not farmed out to a machine shop) and a new ring set would have things in order.
The brown stain on the pistons is burnt oil. ;)

Cylinders were fine. Honed. New rings. Had difficulty getting correct rings. S&S changed pistons and rings manufacturers. Almost had to get new pistons if we couldn't find rings. S&S finally gave us the manufacturer info and we got the correct rings. Broke it in Bike runs great. No leaking cylinder base gaskets any more.

great to hear the pictures looked like there was some heavy blow by. and having delt with these in the past most needed to be bored to to less than ideal piston to wall spec
