Aim Clutch Upgrade for 113 kit
« on: March 28, 2016, 01:32:17 PM »

I've done some searching, but still a bit confused.

I'm having the 113 GMR package done, and hopefully the parts will be sent back soon. So, I'm looking at clutch upgrades to handle the extra power.

Mine is 2009 SERG with 50,000 miles and stock clutch.

Is this the kit I want to order?

http://aim-tamachi.com/collections/vp-performance-kit/products/stage2-vp-performance-kit-vp95lt-and-340lbs-spring-vp021-340

Also, I wonder if I need clutch plates since mine is original.

Guess I should add that I'm pretty easy on the clutch, and I presently have no issues with slippage, etc.

Also, I want only want to upgrade what I need to, and don't want to spend more that I need to.

If the clutch is operating properly now, just put the VPC 95 in it with the OE Spring / Plates...or the SE heavy duty spring might be enough? But not both...
I'm sure that Steve knows exactly what you need...

If you haven't ever done it, I recommend flushing and re-filling the hydraulics...

Got my VPC-95 off of Amazon, still has the lifetime warranty, according to AIM

Ok so lets talk about lever pull first the 84 vs the 95 The 84 has a different location where it contacts the spring. In a nut shell reduce pull with 84 unit. 95 will be a slight reduction ... But install heavier spring and the 95 can be tough to pull.  So AIM is a lock up unit so with the CVO spring that you have its it stronger than stock and a 95 it will hold that 117 we just built.

Or if you want even lighter pull run the 84 but you will need a 380 spring . That will still be lighter than stock..

If my stock spring with the 84 will work, then thats what Ill do. I dont want to replace my stock spring if It isnt necessary.

Just to confirm Steve, the 84 with stock spring will be fine with the 113 build?

Correction- what I need is the 95 with my stock CVO spring, which is a 360 lb spring according to the Aim website. That will be good for 155 ft lb of torque.

We use the stock spring with the 95 never tried the 84.. But its all based on how much tq the engine makes and where in the RPM range..  Short cam 113 good pipe should make a fair amount of tq early. So being that the Aim is a centrifugal unit you may need a stiffer spring. Myself like a light pull so buy a heavier spring at the same time and try the stock one if its slips down low swap the spring out .  again the 84 + the 380 works very well . you get extra pack holding power up to 3000 then the lock up does its thing. Again I like to see a large pack and lock up but that is not as cost effective.

So being clear more than one way to do it , and without extra pack holding power from the spring you can get slippage down low as the lock is again a 3000+ workable unit , and lets not confuse peak holding power with lock vs non lock up area .. This is not just about peak , look at the 117 we built 130 tq @ 2500 that is a non lock up area. so from clutch to clutch it can vary , that may be where you go from the 84 to the 95 again up to you as you are the end user

so think about this for a second . You are two up in 6th gear , car slows down to lets say 50 -55 MPh , you do not down shift but just roll on the throttle lots weight plus big tq and the RPM is too low at this point to allow lock up to work . = slippage. A stock pack will not tolerate that for very long and it may leave you on the side of the road .

So look over the charts look at lever pull don't worry about peak hold power as its not the end all be all for most builds. Look at the 84 380 set up 5 more lbs of lever pull. Maybe not bee what we see but the chart is the chart. Look at the curve go from there , over kill is not needed keep that in mind as well

Good luck

Great Info here :2vrolijk_21: Thanks for posting Steve :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

My set-up (SE 380 Spring, Alto Carbonite Plates, AIM VP-95) is pretty much overkill, everywhere...

that's why I'm wanting to try some 280 & 300lb Springs, the Alto Plates definitely add grip, I usually cruise >2700 in the upper gears, can feel some pressure from the AIM 95 here...

Good info...but a lot of it.

Maybe the 84 with 380 spring then.

I'd like to just go with what my builder recommends.

What do say Steve? 84 with 380?

Actually, going with the VP95LT as suggested by my tuner. He also suggested a 2013+ clutch spring, which Im not sure is the same as the OEM spring in my 2009 SERG.

Not doing the spring now. Will see if I get any slipping on the dyno first, then go from there.

Curious who is doing your dyno tuning.  Not a lot of options in the Toronto area

I just did a 113 build. I got a good price on the AIM 400. It is installed and I have about 138 miles on the bike. No difference in the lever pull and so far no issues with the clutch.

Be Safe

Yes, sad but true. I go down to PA- Dave Stoddart at Pocono Mtn HD. Used to have his own shop, and is one of the best tuners in the country. It's a day trip- 620 kms/400 miles. I like road trips and have the time, so I don't mind the trip at all.

I wish I had the time.  Bruce Roy did mine and fairly happy with it.  although I have the V&H Dresser Duals and Twin Slash mufflers, which is probably costing me a a few digits on both TQ and HP.  Both were on the bike when I bought it doesn't make sense to change for a few extra numbers on the dyno.

Hey, as long as you are happy, and it runs cool and doesn't decel pop or do other strange things, it's all good. Which tuning device did he use- thought he only used the PCV. Years back when I first got my bike and Bruce was in Burlington, I took him in my TTS, as he said he was willing to try and use it. He did a couple dyno runs (was running the Fullsac map), and said it looked good, and he probably couldn't improve it much. I think part of it was that he didn't want to try and figure out the TTS on a Friday afternoon, but he was right by saying the Fullsac map worked well.

I bought my bike used and it had the old version of the SE tuner.  I had the cables and the connector box.  Bruce said he would tune with that, but that the old SE system was often buggy and it might take some time since the bike had an HD canned map and results were poor.  I decided to upgrade to a PC-V at the time as any re-tuning would be much easier and Bruce would waive the tuning time if done in the winter along with engine upgrades.  I had Bruce changed out the cam the following winter and then the winter after that did the heads and bumped compression.  I also thought it was best to use the PC-V as that is Bruce's preferred device.

I have heard many tuners prefer to work with one device (either TTS or PC-V).  Probably best to go to someone who works with TTS everyday to get best results.

Were you happy with his work and his tune?

I think its more important to find the right tuner guy, then use the device he prefers.

I have been very happy with his work.  Unfortunately he has moved much further west, making it difficult for me to get there as I'm coming from Downtown Toronto.  Not a lot of options for good work on HDs in the city

There is a good guy at Aviation Cycles around Cawthra/Lakeshore in Mississauga. Ive never been, but Ive only heard good things about him. Dont think he tunes though.

My guy is Brent at Bronkos in Milton. His work is always done right, the first time and his labour rates are good too at $65 hr.

I have heard good things about Aviation and may go there for service this year and also need a set of tires.  While a bit of a drive from downtown, they are close to a Go-Train stop so that is always an option if I have to leave the bike
