Baker Compensator
« on: August 06, 2016, 09:54:22 AM »

Well 13,500 miles ago I posted where I installed the new Backer Compensator along with new clutch disks and steels and a new tensioner.  Well while on my way home from Alaska I started getting the dreaded compensator knock. I made it back to Maryland and pulled it a part and the new Baker Compensator took a chit. I took the comp out and it is a series "B" they are now on series "K". I called Baker and they want it back and it is supposed to be under warranty. Before I receive a new one they want to make sure it was installed correctly.

I'd be wanting to know why they sent you a "B" edition when they are already up to "K"?

If Baker has a warranty and stands behind it, that's one step ahead of HD

I purchased the unit a while ago. I pulled the motor in January and did a complete rebuild. Upgraded the primary drive at that time. I hope the new one will last a lot longer!!!!!

This is getting ridiculous.

If Harley would start with a bullet proof crank, rather than a flexible POS, they wouldn't need to add an oversized compensator, a slipper clutch, and a rear wheel cush drive to protect it.

first one (OE) 15k miles, second one would of been a later 13/early14 with the glue in HD deal 10k miles 14oz spectro oil thats what the bandit clutch people suggested, i under stand why that one went bad and it was noisy!! third one  was the late 14 and had 22k plus miles on it running a full qt of spetro oil, it just started making noise not to bad, but the stator went bad so while it was apart i replaced it

I asked Jock to take them and resize them and post any or all of them. I think there is about 330 total. He followed the trip on Facebook and has access to the pics. He may be in Sturgis.

Exactly!!!!! I had a come apart with a few friends last night by the bike lift. I said the exact same thing with a few more choice words thrown in. It is ALL about the POS Cranks they are producing now. I think in the long run all of the changes they have had to make and pay for in warranty it would have been cheaper to keep the stronger cranks!!!!!!

Reading all of the post about low milage 15 cvo Street Glide`s problems is freaking me out! My new purchase a couple weeks ago of a 4000 mile  CVO S.G. w/ noise on shifts, poor clutch op. and viberation upon front braking.

I have to ask a dumb queston, likely the answer is on one of the various post regarding bad compensators. I apoligize in advance and want to ask what noise(s) and what  engine operating conditions occur when the compensator goes bad?

First off NO question is a dumb question. You will never know if you don't ask.

You will notice the comp going bad when you first release the clutch from a dead stop. You will hear the noise coming from the primary. It may sound like it is up front where the comp is located BUT you may hear it in the rear and in the trans and on the right side at the trans. They start knocking then will get progressively worse. When I bought the Baker unit it reminded me of the old style shovel comps. I was so happy and was thinking this will fix all of the comp problems. I was very surprised to hear it start knocking when it did. It didn't start out as a quite knock. It went to sledge hammer knock right away. The first thing I checked was to see if it had come loose. This was not the case. It is back in Bakers hands now and I am just waiting for the new one to arrive.

Ed I had 13.5K on my Baker comp. I replaced the HD SE comp at 22K as it was going south. I run Redline Primary Fluid and I run 1qt plus 6oz. I did add a Southern Oregon Hot Bikes chain tensioner when I installed the Baker Comp. I also had a series "B" Baker Comp and they are now on series "K". I had heard they were having problems with the early units after I installed mine. The Baker unit comes with a 5 year 50K warranty. I hope the improvements they are doing will give us more life. I am not hard on my bike at all. I do have a 113 motor on it but I don't really push it.

Thanks to all for the feedback! Let's keep it coming!

IMHO "pushing it" is not as detrimental as some other operational habits...

DAWG, Did Baker have any comments as to the aftermarket tensioner?

No they didn't even ask. I also purchased the Baker Tensioner when I bought the comp. I initially installed it until I found the SOHB true hydraulic tensioner. When I took it apart the primary chain was perfect as far as tension goes. That unit is working perfectly. The ONLY problem with the Baker tensioner is you have to remove the primary cover to check chain tension. Thus the change. I can tell you my bike and the drivetrain went through hell on the trip to Alaska, not to mention the Bushtec trailer behind it. For all I went through if this is the only problem I have it was a win win for me and the bike. Now the question is, would I buy the Baker Compensator again???????? Yes I would. Now if the replacement unit fails early then I might change my answer.

When mine went bad I didn't have any of the before mentioned problems. Mine started making a sort of loud whiring type noise that got worse until I had the dealer look at it. Mine was caused by the primary bearing or race walking in somewhat and creating a bind. With Jim's (hddude's) advice installed the Baker primary bearing and have never had another issue. So far that is ;D
