Dropped the bike!
« on: September 16, 2016, 11:21:42 AM »

Brian, John and Mike and I went for a ride yesterday to Highlands NC.  When we got ready to leave I made a U turn from the parking spot and dropped the bike!  I was told that I was unconscious and the bike was on one of my legs.  I don't remember anything about it!  The last thing I remember was opening my tourpack before leaving, next thing I remember is standing on the side walk talking to Brian and John.  I don't remember dressing for the ride, starting the bike or making the U turn!  Weird.  I was told that I talked to EMT's and told them I was fine and sent them on their way.  Big mistake!  After walking around and sitting for about 30 minutes I realized that I needed to get check out.  John called 911, they came back out and transported me to the local hospital.  Judy wasn't on the ride with me and John called her and she drove from Maggie Valley to be with me and carry me back to MV.

I was diagnosed with a concussion and bruised ribs.

John and Brian left my bike at the fire department in Highlands.  The service manager at my local HD dealer heard about my situation and is sending someone to pick up my bike.  Thank you Mike!

Anyway, I'm OK.  A lot of pain from my ribs and a slight headache,  Can't drive or ride for three weeks.  It could have been a lot worse!

Thanks to John, Mike, Brian, Judy and the service manager at my local dealer!

Hope your feeling better sooner than later.
Beware of the dreaded concussion, if the symptoms seem to linger you may have to seek a specialist.

We all hope that you are okay.  Sorry about the fall but it shows that anything can happen.  Good luck with your complete recovery.

Tommy, assuming the memory loss is from a concussion with the fall or had something happened before that led to the fall?

I hope you have a speedy recovery!  I am also wondering what caused the initial fall?  Is there a possibility something else is going on?

The did CAT scans, EKG, blood work etc.  They ruled out stroke and heart problems. ER doc thinks it was due to concussion. I'll follow up with my doctor when I get home just to be sure.

Just cosmetic damage. Upper fairing, left mirror, lower fairing, highway peg, clutch lever and saddle bag will have to be replaced.

Ok, but was there any damage to the motorcycle (an attempt to lighten the situation).

Sorry to read the tale of your incident, Tommy...  Just goes to show you never know what adventures will fill your day when you roll out of bed in the morning.  Take it easy with your concussion.  I certainly hope your memory issues are the result of your fall and not the cause of your fall.  Heal fast and well, my friend...

I know it's hard to "listen" (I've been told by wifey men have that problem) and we have to find out the "hard" way (Mom.. {another female} always told me "make your bed hard, you have to lay in it")... ne ways... sounds like you're listening to your body (which is hard for us to do at times) which I'm glad to hear... we ain't no "spring chicken" anymore... be well.

Tommy
Just checking in, concussions have no clear cut recovery time my friend, only you will know when the time is right. However, you have to be truthful with the doctor(s) that specialize in this field (neurologists). Not saying you are not being truthful to the doctors, just don't be stubborn one on one during your visit.

Everyone on this Board wants you back at your top notch self.

I'm speaking for myself here and I will be honest...As we age I'm 66 now, things start to change, we have no control over this, you just have to learn to listen to your own body, and your Dr. We start to lose our balance, our eyesight worsens, our judgement gets a little out of wack.  Sometimes the medications we are on has a lot to do with this, I myself had to park my scooter for a while due to dizzy spells that were caused by some meds I am on, I just didn't feel right and felt I was in danger of hurting myself or someone else.  I parked it for over a year and now I am doing much better and feel I can ride safe again.  My point here for all YOU big tough guys...LISTEN to your bodys, if you don't feel right, don't get on that bike...Tom, I hope you feel better real soon.

Not judging, just curious, did you wear a helmet when you hit the street?

sorry to hear about the drop, but how's the bike
Sorry about what happened but the second part of this response is usually what most of us ask first before we think about what may have happened to us. :huepfenlol2:

I hope you are doing better. I had a similar deal when I went down on my bike. I thought I was fine other than some back pain. They had me on the ambulance and I was arguing about being fine. Well my daughter had shown up by now. I was not far from their place. She gave me what for and insisted I go in and be checked. Then the EMS feller told me of a rider he had on the ambulance a bit back. The guy seemed fine and insisted he go home. They finally let him get out and go. Within a half hour he was dead. Apparently a blood vessel in his brain had broke in the accident. Not a serious mark on the guy. His helmet had a slight ding on it and scrapes similar to mine. That story scared me a bit so I went for the ride. They did all kinds of scans mri and stuff. Turned out I had two cracked discs in my back. Would the ride have saved the other guy? They could not possibly predict this but told me he might have at least had a chance if he were at the hospital.
