whats your bike worth
« on: April 30, 2017, 11:55:46 AM »

Whats your bike worth. This is a warning to all bikers thinking of upgrading to a CVO. They aren't worth anything. Mine is a 2014 ultra limited with 20000 miles. Trade in value is 22000 and thats from Harley. So I have lost 20000 grand in just 3 years. Harley always bregged about resale value. I was talking to a dealer in Seattle Wa. and he the #1 worst value on trade in right now is a harley CVO.

SOP for dealers to low ball the hell out of a trade in. May even be worse now with so many of last years model left unsold at many dealers

I'm with CCW.   In Ohio, they would want my bike and at least $22K to go to a 2017.  My days of paying $40k for a new bike is over.

KBB price's aren't realistic. I have the exact bike as you and KBB says $30,700 retail but I know of 2 HD dealers that have had that bike for sale used and both were right around $24,000 and Patriot HD currently has one for $23,700.

I looked up yours on cycletrader and you're lucky to get $22k. I saw three of them on the first page, all from HD dealers, ranging from $23.5-$24.8 and if somebody wanted one on the cheap dream machines has one for $13.5k (w/mods) if they didn't care about a few scratches.

I hate that but it's just like a cage...the only way to truly get your $ back out of it is to ride the hell out of it and keep repairing it until the cost of the repair is more than the bike is worth.  I have an 04 Nissan Titan (bought new) with 350,000 miles on the clock, my bike has nearly 50,000 on her, got 110,000 on my work car, and wife's Armada has 180,000. I hope they all keep running cause I don't plan to get rid of any of them until all the good is gone, then just give it to the tow company for reimbursement and a ride home!

Its been that way for a while. I sold my 2013 CVO RG with just under 29k miles for $22k. But it can work in your favor too. 2 years ago, I snagged a 2010 blue cvo SG with 1200 miles on it for $19k. I guess you don't buy Harleys for what you can sell them for but for how much fun you can have with them.

HI CCW RIDER, I agree with your train of thought. I knew when I bought my 2009 in late 2008 that the resale would be zilch in about five years. I haven't had too many new things through out the years. A couple of cars, a nice 1972 Yamaha 650 (nice ride I think my Father was more excited about it than I was since a lot of times when I came home he was out riding it). However I am going to keep this one to the bitter end if possible. It is nine years old now. I don't know what it is worth, but if I keep it another six or seven years it still might fetch $8500.00 There is a lot of good feelings about getting something new and then taking care of it and getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. Like some of the other guys say drive it , enjoy it and then move on. Life is too short. CAHDBIKER

I've never understood why we would expect high percentages of resale for a vehicle that is so significantly overpriced to begin with, that for all of the last several years has been produced beyond realistic demand, hasn't had a great reliability reputation and has competitive new product with equivalent if not advanced capability for less than we think we should get used.  The math just never worked.

We don't (or at least shouldn't) buy these things for recovery or investment.  If we can't afford them as secondary if not "toy" purchase we'd best not being buying such expensive toys.  Even when for a surprising number of years good used Harleys could be sold for at or near new cost that was a quirk of intentional lower production versus demand and a demographic that hadn't gotten bald and arthritic yet and was in its earning/spending prime.

I was in Dream Machines a few weeks back because I had time to kill in Dallas.  "A few scratches" is no joke, every bike in the place looked like they'd had a fresh detail with 20 grit sand paper.  I was shocked, new, old, didn't matter, they seriously need a new detailer.

I would bet most of us have spent as much on "minor improvements" over the life of our bike than trade in....lol.

There are two three ways of looking at what it's worth.
# 1. What the book or dealer/ buyer says it is worth. What someone will pay for your bike.
# 2. What the new/ replacement bike will cost you to buy. My bike falls in this category. If I keep         rather than replace it at whatever price . That is what it is worth to me.
# 3. Oh Yeah, whatever the insurance company pays you when it is stolen or totaled.

KBB price's aren't realistic. I have the exact bike as you and KBB says $30,700 retail but I know of 2 HD dealers that have had that bike for sale used and both were right around $24,000 and Patriot HD currently has one for $23,700.

while I agree somewhat, I was really pointing out the huge disparity between what the 'book' says and what ccw's dealer was offering him for trade.

I don't buy/sell often, but when I have, I usually just go for the trade for the added convenience.  I have always managed to get trade for what I would have sold the bike outright for.  and around here, it doesn't matter if you are financing, paying cash outright, etc. the new bike is going to cost x amount.  very little haggling.  you might get the 1k service thrown in, or a $100 gift card, but unless it is a bike that the dealer just absolutely has to blow out, then you aren't getting a huge deal on it.

but, having said all that.  I didn't buy the bike to trade it in and get all (or most) of my money back.  I bought it cause I liked it, I always wanted a cvo, and I plan on riding it till the wheels fall off.  then i'll buy new wheels.

Every bike I've bought was used from a private party and every bike I've sold has been sold outright and not traded-in.  Still lost money overall but maybe not as bad as buying new and trading-in used to the dealer on new.  Downside is I've never owned a brand new bike in the exact color and model I wanted.  But then again every bike I've owned I've done a lot of engine work and customization to make it "mine".  Everything is a compromise.  Bottom line, less deals the better LOL.

Maybe I’m strange, but resale value never really crosses my mind. I can’t believe how many people buy motorcycles, hardly touch them, and then want to trade them off in 2-3 seasons for something new. Spending 30k plus, I figured people would buy something they’d be sure to want for a good while. I bought my CVO used 3 years ago and it still feels “new” to me, always giddy as Hell when it’s time to ride it. It’s hard to get across my thoughts through text and I apologize if I wasn’t tactful. I just don’t understand it.

:nixweiss: For the most part, over the years I have sold (outright) my cars/trucks/bikes............no kinda "trade in".  But with Harleys,  I have indeed gone the (trade in) route a couple of times.  If you can deal (without) the CVO logo and all the fancy paint, etc.  you can get into a new Harley for a lot less......via a trade.

I paid the big time price a few yrs back for a '09 CVO Ultra Classic.  A 110 with all the bells/whistles.......and the hoggish extra weight (high up ) with the tour pack.........which (overall weight wise) I felt was just too much.  I took it to Sturgis and enjoyed the bike for a few yrs.....but wanted something that handled better like my old Road Kings.  Finally opted for a new 2014 Street Glide Special.  Dealer set it up with V&H headers/rinehart duals/tuner/GDO transmitter (like I already had on the Ultra)/ my expensive LED headlite from the Ultra........custom highway pegs plus matching brake/shifter pads and floor pads and the windshield of my choice.  Plus a few other things that I can't remember now...........but I moved from a 2009 bike to a 2014 bike with a full new warranty...........and $2500 plus taxes/plates. :cherry:

I trade about every two years, right at 45K miles.  Dealers do not want a 4 year old bike with over 90K miles on it.  Found out the hard with with my wife Heritage.  I average right at 24K miles a year, my wife closer to 30K a year.

I have a second CVO I bought knowing I was keeping it, as its an anniversary bike, and I also wanted a hot rod.  It's both, I have it built to 138 HP and 140 torque.  I will keep this past 45K as I built the motor, and it is not a high milage bike, its my toy.

I have traded lots of bikes after 2~3 years.  I have only ever regretted or missed one bike, the 12 CVO Road Glide Skunk.  My wife even told me to just get the new CVO and keep that one.  I just couldn't justify having 4 bikes.

I love my 17 CVO Street Glide, love the new motor, new suspension and great paint.  It will be traded before 50K miles.

I think HD"s only option is to cut production big time, especially with the CVO's, and try to somewhat back to the days when you had to wait for a bike.  It's a huge problem though.  So many new and fancy dealerships, that need to have inventory turn. Most of them seem to have way too many bikes on the floor.  New dealership's, increased production, and increasing prices yearly, will always catch up to you.  I'm just glad, my relationship with them, is an end user.  I think this will be my last CVO, however, I have said that before.

ANYBODY that buys a Harley with an investment in mind is out of touch. Buy it, ride it, enjoy it.........but you ain't gonna make money on it. Harley made sure those days were over with the 2003 market flood.

I sold my 2009 FLHTCUSE4 for $16.5.
It had loads of extras and was as clean as any 2009 available.
I am completely psychotic with keeping my stuff clean.
Most money I have ever lost on anything I have ever owned and traded or sold.
Campers, boats, cars, other motorcycles, the CVO is the record holder.
But you only live once.  It was not bought as an investment.

That being said, I will never put $40k+++++ into another motorcycle.

Learning from others here that the used CVO is the smart buy.  Next one will be used.

There is no new $40,000 recreational vehicle out there that you wouldn't take a major bath on 8 years later-period. Have to go in "eyes wide open" and spend that money strictly because you want it and will enjoy it in spite of the lousy investment it is.

The thing I've come to know is you pay more for the name of Harley Davidson then what the bike is really worth. You then add 10k on that name cost to add CVO to it.
When I was shopping for my Harley l was looking at a new 103 touring at 18k and change (in 2011)and just happened to see outside a row of used bikes waiting to go into the dealer work shop (they where trade in bikes)
I was asking the price of different one's and got to the one l have now (it was a 2007 priced at that time was £29,999) the sales guy said £12,500 and it only had 6k on the clock all recalls and mods 1 and 2 had been done. I thought too myself a 3 year old 30k bike just had it's first service. I said I'll have it and would you put a new tyre on the back the rep said sure and no charge.
So we went in l put 500 down got the finance signed the paperwork and delivery the following week.
Here's where the story gets better. Half way through the delivery week l get a phone call from the dealer saying we're sorry but we've made a mistake, we've gaven you the wrong price for your bike (operative words YOUR BIKE) the price for the bike should have been £18,500 ( there you go right there a 12k loss on a 3 year old CVO) the manager said we have to have another 6k I'm sorry for the misunderstanding,......So am I,.... I said, then he said you do realise it's a CVO and we should have not let it go for £12,500. I replied,...Yes l knew it was a CVO but I was there looking to buy a bike and if your sales rep had said 18,500 l would have kept walking and buy a new 103 touring bike for the same money. I took the price your sales rep gave me if he didn't know it was a CVO l can't cover his mistake and finance another 6k. I did feel bad about it but was not going to do anything about it at the same time.
So my bike is my retirement investment I'll have it till I'm gone and spend what ever it needs to it too keep me rolling.

Well the used HD market here in Western Australia is "forked" to the Max !

2013 CVO Breakout here was $44K Aussie dollars new ( $32634 USD at today's exchange rate)

An acquaintance of mine here has just bought a used one privately , exact same colour (colour !) as mine , with 4,000 K's ( 2,400 miles)

( I have 18,000 K's on mine ,or 11,000 miles !)

He paid $25,000 Aussie dollars ( 18,400 dollars USD !)

Guess what mine is worth ??

Talked to a dealer the other day about this exact same thing and he mentioned that Harley corp boys have been discussing this in depth as of late.  Basically they flooded the market with way too many CVO's each year so its no longer a special bike by any means.  The old math of adding up all the extras you  get with one and thus saving money doesn't really make a difference.  Supposedly there discussing cutting back production and reducing models in the CVO group this remains to be seen.  Since there publicly traded I'll believe it when I see it.....

"Limited Edition" means to H-D "limited to the number we can build and sell".  Every model is a limited edition LOL.

There is no new $40,000 recreational vehicle out there that you wouldn't take a major bath on 8 years later-period. Have to go in "eyes wide open" and spend that money strictly because you want it and will enjoy it in spite of the lousy investment it is.
Jus sayin

Thanks for your input.  Did you read my post?
This is the biggest loser of all my previous recreational vehicles.
"You only live once.  Didn't buy it as an investment"
just saying

Realistically these are $50k+++recreational vehicles...tuners, exhaust, air cleaners, dyno time...
I know I had way more than that in mine.
Again!! YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!

Also my bike was bought by a good dude who is riding the he11 out of it...so all is good!

I have learned over the years that whether you are talking bikes, boats, cars etc. it is truly a supply and demand market.
My first Harley was a 1997 Fatboy with the custom paint kit for that year and it held it's value for several years until the Twin Cam motor teething issues were worked out then once customer confidence was established no one wanted an "old EVO" motor they wanted the new improved Twin Cam Harley with a warranty etc.
Then CVOs took off with marketing PR with things like built on a hand assembly line in a separate building not on some automated assembly line like stock bikes. You could do the math and buying a CVO made sense if you were a rider who would add all the flash and chrome anyway to your bike. CVOs were limited to two models a year so it wasn't flooding the market as well.
Now that CVOs are assembled on the regular assembly line and are basically an option package I don't know how the value can be justified at time of sale? It definitely proves that out at trade in time.
When I was growing up we were concerned with power, speed and handling of our vehicles now it seems the new owners want all the latest electronic bells and whistles and sales can be affected good or bad if your vehicle has or doesn't have the latest set of bells and whistles.
I have to admit before I joined this website many years ago I wasn't aware of people buying CVOs and trading them every few years to get the latest one. I thought CVOs were the pinnacle of bike ownership and I had to save to get my "dream bike" and would keep it for a long time. Who knew there was such disposable income in the country to start a collection or buy and sell CVOs all the time?

Good perspective.  When I got my '04 SEEG I thought it could very well be the last bike I bought.  I could not believe I had such a nice motorcycle every time I got on it.  Absolutely loved everything about that bike.  A few years later I got the itch for a 2000 SERG.  Found a nice one-owner trade in 2007 and bought it.  Then could not live without a blue flame FXR3.  Had the CVO bug, and had it bad.

Those early years, probably through '06 or so, with the CVO Fat Boys and V-Rods were probably the pinnacle of the CVO line, at least to me.  Since then, all the over-production, fewer CVO-specific vs. regular catalog parts and iffy paint combos have changed what Custom Vehicle Operations stood for, again, IMO.

Didn't make one red cent on the SEEG or the FXR3 (should've kept that one, dammit) and certainly won't on the SERG or the SEUC whenever the time comes to let them go.  But I've had more than my fair share of fun since the fall of 2003 when that SEEG arrived on its pallet at the dealer.  And, better yet, through my involvement on this site, I have made lifelong friends that I would've never met, otherwise.

So, it's all good.  :2vrolijk_21:

Whats your bike worth. This is a warning to all bikers thinking of upgrading to a CVO. They aren't worth anything. Mine is a 2014 ultra limited with 20000 miles. Trade in value is 22000 and thats from Harley. So I have lost 20000 grand in just 3 years. Harley always bregged about resale value. I was talking to a dealer in Seattle Wa. and he the #1 worst value on trade in right now is a harley CVO.

I just traded away the same bike and they gave me $23K. They sold it for 24.5K.

Even worse I bought my wider an 2015 SGS all decked out to the max with custom paint and all the add ons straight off the floor for 36K. We gave it away for 19K. I had a Harley dealer tell me two years ago not to buy an Indian motorcycle because they would not hold their value. Ha Ha! Neither will HD. No current production motorcycle will hold any real value, there are just to many bikes out there. They are almost be coming disposable after 60'000 miles.

Was sorely disappointed with the "book" values of my 2006 ULtra CVO suppose I just keep it and ride it till I am out of hours. What do you think 2K you have ridden next to it?

I bought my 16 CVO Limited new for $36k via mil-sales while deployed.  I got the bike I wanted with all the goodies I wanted.  If I had bought a "standard" Ultra Limited of the same year I would have spent more to add all the goodies and it would be worth less than my CVO.  At least with a CVO all the add-ons are included in the resale value, not so for buying a standard bike and adding to it.  In the long run I will ride it till dead then rebuild to ride more.  I never purchase toys for their resale value.

I sold my 2015 FLTRUSE on eBay for $29.5k last fall. It had 15k miles on it.
My local dealer was selling brand new 2016 FLTRUSE at $6k discounts from MSRP.
One of the selling points was that I had a 2+5 extended warranty to transfer in the deal.

I think I made out best as could be expected. My bike moved while other 2015's sat on eBay with $32k ask prices on them.

The last three CVOs I have bought have all been used mostly with very low miles, basically paid NADA value for them.

When getting the first one I could either buy a new Ultra or a two year old CVO Ultra with 11,000 miles for the same price.  Either one I would need to tune the suspension to my tastes and the used CVO already had a SERC.  Was an easy decision.

Probably worth more to me than anyone else... LMFAO

I don't trade much,,, 'tend to keep my HDs for a while,,, In over 40 Years with Harleys, the current 3 in the Stable are my 4th, 5th, & 6th ones...

Selling my first 2 Harleys, I made a profit,,, "Ran the '76 Sportster >15 Years got $500. more than I paid for it... The Red '81 FXWG (owned for 17 years) was a decent lick,,, got 3x more than I paid for it... The '02 RK I traded paper for the '01 FXDWG2,,, Purchased the '05 & '09 "pre-owned"('05 & '12) from individuals ...

One things for sure,,, the "Bottom is Out" of the pre-owned Harley Market,,, A good time to buy...

With about 45k miles on mine, not sure my dealer would even take it in trade at all. If HD comes out with a 2018 CVO custom in a decent color I will find out.

My 09 CVO Road Glide had 47K on it when I traded for the 12 CVO Road Glide, got 6 K less than I paid for it in trade.  The 12 CVO Road glide was traded with 46K on it, and I got 5K less than I paid for it.  The 15 CVO Road glide ultra was traded with 44K on it, and I got 10K less than I paid for it.  I was ok with the trade value on the first two, the 15 Hurt and I was not happy but that was the market.

My bike is my gift from my wife after 23 years of Active Duty to protect freedom and 'merica.  We all know that freedom is not free but keeping it is priceless.  So my bike and in turn wife are both priceless to me and that is all that really matters.

dealer offered me $19K straight out purchase for my 13 FLHTCUSE8 with 45,000 miles. Said retail was about 24 - 25 but then said we have a 110 anniversary CVO ultra classic that we have lowered the price to $22K on and cannot sell it.

LOL. My wife and I aren't far off. Our 2004 Saturn Vue has 237k on it, and our 2007 Dodge Nitro has 190k on it. Though, once the wife finishes college in 2.5 years, I'm going to be looking at getting a truck again for the towing capacity.

I bought a new Nissan Titan in '04, first model year for them.  I think mine was an SL with all the goodies.  I had the BEST factory sound system, a Rockford Fosgate with sub under the driver's seat.  We bought a new '04 Nissan Murano the same year.  I got rid of the Titan with around 85k miles about four years ago.  It was my back and forth to work truck.  At 12 mpg I couldn't afford to keep driving it around 300 mile a week.

My wife now drives a '16 GMC Terrain Denali and loves it, but not as much as her Murano.  She said that the Murano just fit her better.

Well I'm now driving the Murano and without Bluetooth, GPS etc, I had to do some tweaks.  I added a new Pioneer AVIC-7220NEC with GPS, XM Sirrius, HD radio, Bluetooth and backup camera.  To do this I had to replace the main center section of the dash with all the push buttons for heater etc.  That was over $200 alone.  So after I did the install myself, I ended up with around $1200 into it.  I just had a remote start installed two weeks ago at Best Buy.  So it "fits" me now to a tee.  It really is a great SUV AWD and gets in the low 20's for mpg.  With only 108k miles, it still looks just like new.  I'll drive it for another couple years and just before I retire, I'm looking to get a Nissan Titan XD with the Cummins 5.0L diesel turbo.  Should get in the mid 20's for mileage, not too bad.  It comes with a 5th wheel hitch installed so a camper and toy hauler may be in my retired life's future.

Sorry to ramble guys.  :(

Let Harley keep them.  What is funny when I bought mine Harley wouldn't finance their own bike unless I put money down because the bike value was not as high as their selling price.  Sucks...........and I'm irritated as well.

I agree... I have been offered anywhere from 10,000 all the way to 16,000 in the last month at all the surrounding dealers. Indian will go to 20,000 without even looking at it...what the hell has happened ?! especially when all the local harley dealers have been ghost towns....only thing selling is t shirts for Christmas! I think I will wait until the dealer desperation occurs then see what they will offer. I still shocked at the new 2016 models still for sale collecting dust.
