Air Filter yellowing or burnt looking
« on: August 20, 2017, 02:41:20 PM »

I've got a 2015 CVO Limited, screaming eagle tuner and exhaust.  Why is the filter constantly turning yellow.   I've about 8k miles.  It started at about 2k miles and I could clean it but now it's permanent. Any advice appreciated.  A better breather advice.

How did you clean it? I washed mine using K&N pre-soak spray, then soaked in warm (not hot) water/dawn dish washing liquid and it looks like new, Same on my 09 SERG. Curious if whatever you used stained the media.

Bleaching from sunlight maybe? Mine starts to fade from the K&N red oil color after a cleaning to progressively lighter Shades as the months go by. Most noticeably on the top side of the filter that is directly exposed to sunlight.

Of course that's just mine yours could be a completely different situation. Could you post up some pictures?

The stock filter is a washable paper element that is run dry (no oil).  Did you follow the cleaning directions in the manual?  The ones I've seen start out white, and after a few cleanings tend to start looking a little gray.  I've never seen one that turned yellow, so that's got me stumped.

When it comes time to replace the stock element, look at the K&N replacement.  It's a cotton gauze material that is coated with a special air filter oil (usually red).  Be aware however that those also turn darker over time.  Running any air cleaner with an exposed element will lead to appearance issues.  I don't know of any filter manufacturer that recommends bleaching them btw, so don't go there if tempted.

Best way to be forced to buy a new paper air filter...Wash yours with chlorine bleach. It will self destruct pretty quik.

Update:  I've never done anything other than blow it out with air.  The dealer has cleaned it twice.  I got the bike back about two weeks ago from service and they said it is normal for the heat to turn the filter different colors like that. It honestly looks like burnt paper or overheated paper.   Thanks for the input guys.  I'm going to replace it and pay more attention this time on long rides when it gets the hottest.

I have always done the exact same thing, although I do take the element off and blast it from the inside out with the air hose once a year.

jb, that almost looks more like rust from the wire mesh holding the paper filter material in place.  I have had that happen a couple times over the years but not the entire paper filter element yellowing.

Yeah I thought rust also at first but nothing on the chrome or inner metal.

Its all the metal from lifter wear blowing out the intake into the filter then rusting!  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
