Bike hit a wall in 4,5 and 6th

At a thou miles I finally opened her up. I had my wife on the back and went through the gears at redline. It felt like it lost steam in the top 3 gears. What's up with that? We're both heavy, so am wondering if clutch spring is suspect. Bike is bone stock.

Help us help you by giving more details. I checked your posts and see you have a 2016 CVO Limited. I presume stock. How much is do you and your wife weigh together? (Don't give us her weight, individually if you know what is good for you.   :huepfenlol2: )  If the bike is running well, I think you should surely be able to hit rev limiter in fourth gear.  So, Any sounds? Stuttering? Other observations?

We are probably over the five hundred mark. Fourth hit the redline and I shifted but the bike struggled to get there never hit redline in fifth and in sixth, it just stayed where it was. I never hit the rev limiter. It felt like it just ran out of torque. I can't hear too good but thought I heard a rattle and not like a knock or ping.

I seem to remember something about Harley adding a form of governor that limits speed to around 110 mph, so there is a rev limiter AND a speed limiter.  I'm not sure if that applies to your particular bike or not, I'll try to figure it out.

OK, if you have a 2017 then there is both a rpm and a speed limiter.  I just assumed you were talking about a 2017 since you mentioned having about 500 miles.  As best I can tell a 2016 did not have the speed limiter.

Jerry, that 110 mph......is that by the Harley speedometer or true 110 mph by gps?  My speedometer says I'm doing about 117-118 mph when my gps says I'm doing 110 mph.  I've heard of this speed limiter thing on the new bikes several times now.  It will not be long until somebody figures out a way of removing the speed limiter.

Seems like the speedometer is pretty accurate to about 65 mph and then it gradually errors to the negative (says I'm going faster than my gps).  We all know how unreliable and inaccurate all the Harley guages are.  :nixweiss:

I was getting on the freeway and redlined it in 4th gear. The engine seemed to lose power and I thought I blew something. After about 30 seconds the power came back. Mechanic said it was most likely the rev limiter. He didn't find anything wrong with the engine.

The bike is a 2016. To tell the truth, I never even looked at the speedometer.

Stock bikes struggle to exceed the century mark fully loaded.
Any good flash tuner can over ride the speed limiter.

Could be rev limiter, but have never had it take 30 seconds to return power.  A couple of seconds sure, but no where near 30 seconds.   :nixweiss:

 Well I am waiting on parts now. I bought woods 777 cams, hylift lifters, fullsac head pipes and a 2" muffler insert. Power vision for a controller.

You shouldn't be shifting at redline to begin with. All that does is slow you down. You should be shifting right around your max power point, and you get that info from a dyno. The only time you should ever come close to red line is wide open in top gear at top speed. If you're gonna ride it like a race bike you should know how to ride a race bike.

Well I find that very condescending. I wanted to see what my bike could do after giving it a break in and you tell me I should not redline it. I will have to go back and ask the dealer where my dyno  chart is so I can properly use half the rpm scale. I wasn't trying to do a land speed run. I am however disappointed in the stock engines performance.

The stock 110 engine is set up for low to midrange torque, and due to the cams more than anything else the torque and power fall off rapidly over 4000 rpm.  Compared to the engines that preceded the 110, like the CVO103, the 110 is much better suited to hauling around a heavy touring bike loaded with people and gear.  Many of us with the 103's complained of the opposite problem, lack of bottom end torque.  Better cam choices from the aftermarket these days can help you keep the low end of the stock 110 and also extend the useful rpm range for better top end power.  Stock is a compromise at best, one that attempts to make the ever heavier bikes pull better on the low end as well as meet emissions regulations.  If stock doesn't suit you, find a good engine builder/tuner and have yours modified to fit your riding style.
