While we were waiting for the Sheriff to write up the warnings, and they were both really cool and on Road Kings, two sport bikes went by heading north at around 70 MPH, I asked the officer what was up with that and he said "there is no way for us to catch the sport bikes on Harleys."

True, no way on a HD.  Years ago made it a regular run, now mostly use that stretch as the quicker way to get somewhere but tend to avoid it because of the crotch rockets.  Too many times have come face to face with one - them in the middle of my lane on the wrong side of the road at full lean and their plan was to go shoulder to shoulder to make the turn.  Less than fun.  Speed limit enforcement took what fun was left out of it a few years back.

Back when I was young, dumb and full of....stupidity, I used to play quite a bit on the Dragon.  Back when Honda had their "Hoot" in K'ville and some other rallies after, I would tag team with another feller on taking folks to 129 and back as one of the day rides associated with the rally.  Most of the groups were sport-touring bikes with a GW or crotch rocket thrown in for good measure.  My ride at the time was the '89 EG.  That was and still is the BEST handling big bike I had ever thrown a leg across.  It would sit in the corners and shoot right out the other side better than anything.  I had many of the sport bike types in dismay when we stopped at the crossroads of time for a break.  They were in wonder at how good that big, old Harley handled.  Those were the days when that part of 129 was just getting the reputation of a great road and traffic was polite no matter the bike/rider/circumstance and the tree only had a few parts on it....
The last time I took the dragon, I rode about halfway, pulled over and watched the idiots riders for about an hour and rode home.  That was 16 years ago and I haven't been back since.  There are way too many individuals that disrespect themselves and others on that road today and that isn't my preferred choice of riding styles.
Those that enjoy it today, more power to you....I'll just look at your pictures and take another path.... ;D

Made a nice leisurely ride through 129 last year going to MV GTG on Tuesday midday.  First time I've ever been through that I had no one in front or behind me the whole way. It was actually very enjoyable that way.

just Google or search YouTube for Tail of the Dragon. It is Route 129 near the Tennessee North Carolina border. 318 turns and 11 miles. Sadly enough it's well popularized but in my opinion it's not even the best Road in the area. While they're try Moonshiner 28 or Wayahl Road. If you're going to ride the dragon I would make sure it's not on the weekend because there is almost a traffic jam all day long on Saturday and Sundays. It's well worth the trip from Ohio because of all the great roads in that immediate area. Not known to most, they filmed a large portion of the Fugitive movie there. At the bottom of the Dragon there is the damn where Harrison Ford jumped from. In a small town called Dillsboro, south and east of the Dragon area the train and bus where they film the crash scene still laying railroad yard. You're also close to Maggie Valley and the Wheels Through Time Museum which is a great way to kill an hour or two.

If you had been with me many years ago and taking that ride,  you just might have (really gotten crap) over the picture.  As  I went around one of the curves,  a mid sized motor home trailering a boat trailer was negotiating the hard turn just ahead of me.

After some of those events,  the State regulators finally put up some signs that try to negate (not let them proceed for those of u from Rio Linda) any such travel along that road from over sized vehicles.

Rapid tire wear and/or under inflation are critical on bikes.  Can any of you elaborate on how or what led you up to a blow out.  :nixweiss:

I pay casual attention to the air pressure and tread wear on my truck and car,  but the bike needs a weary eye when it comes to tires. :drink:

In my younger days I worked for GoodYear on tires small to large.
This is my first experience with a blowout on a tubeless m/c tire and I'm somewhat bewildered on this one...

The day before the "blowout", I checked the tires and each was +- a pound and a half low (digital gauge), which considering the lower ambient temperatures in the mountains (coming from Fla) I felt was good / normal,,,

'Aired up the 5k mile Michelin Commander IIs (that had the recommended amount of Ride-On Sealant installed) to the 38F, 42R that I usually run... Both tires looked fine, much less cupping than the OE HD Dunlops at comparable mileage...

Riding a basically counter clockwise loop, Moonshiner 28, Fontana Dam, Deal's Gap, The Dragon, Tellico Plains, Cherohala Skyway, Robbinsville and back toward Murphy, NC... Nearing Murphy on HWY 129 (4 lane) cruising around 65 mph, while changing lanes we both noticed a subtle shake when crossing the centerline, nothing really alarming, then <5 seconds later we both smelled burning rubber, I immediately slowed and pulled over to the side of the road, when around 20 mph or so it was evident that the tire was riding on the rim. It seemed to be an instantaneous loss of pressure, no noises, bumps or anything that would alert us to the instant loss of air pressure... Just moments earlier I had her leaned over hitting bumps in the road at 15-20 over the posted limit, the Bike was faultless...

We were lucky that the flat happened when & where it did, 2-3 miles from the house, good cell coverage, if we were heeled over in the twisties, it could have been a different story...

Looking at the tire; a single nail hole (no nail) centrally located in the tread, 'thought it would be a good candidate for a plug until we discovered some slits about an inch or so long, inside the tread grooves, near the outside edges...

Over the years I have had 3-4 nails / screws in rear motorcycle tires,,, all were discovered with the nails still in the tires, barely low on air, plugged the tire and rode out the remaining service life, no issues. I never had a nail come out on its own?? As far as the slits,,, I'm thinking that the tire split on its own while riding on the rim (100yds at most) with all that load on it?? I don't really know?? 'Never saw one like this before,,, this is my first instant deflate on a street (tubeless) tire, have had two other instant deflates (F&R) on tube dirt bike tires...On the dirt bikes, the greatest loss of control was when the rear blew...

Surprisingly there was no damage at all to the Rear Wheel.

I don't know if the Ride-On Sealant played any part in the way this issue played out??
