REQUEST FOR REVIEWS OF 2018 H-D WIRELESS HEADSETS
« on: September 06, 2017, 12:42:32 PM »

To FLSTFI Dave and those who have the new, H-D wireless headsets, how is the sound quality compared to what you've used? (I'm spoiled by the quality of my J$M Headset). Ease of use? I have a couple of guys interested in the new bikes. Our LEO club uses CB's during rides so how is that interface if you can comment...

Thanks in advance!

I know Dave is using his H-D wireless headset so maybe he'll chime in and give some feedback. On another note CBs require the additional wiring harness that is listed for 14 - 17 WHIM upgrade and although it doesn't say in the description the 18 CVO SG and RG need it as well if you add a CB. Non CB bikes use the harness that comes with the WHIM.

I can not speak to the speakers yet in the wireless head set.  I have not used them yet, so I do not know about sound quality.  Nice thing is Sena makes a couple speakers for the headset and they just plug into it.

Right now my headset speakers are unplug and am using the headset on a half helmet.  One the software in headset is up to date it pairs easily with the bike.  The mic works very well for GPS voice commands and for phone calls.  Cant test the CB yet as I have the additional wiring harness that is listed for 14 - 17 WHIM upgrade.  It is required for the CB to be able to transmit.

This is going to be so much better than the old wired headsets.

From Sena I just ordered another helmet mount and mic.  79.00 dollars, the bluetooth part can snap on an off quickly.  This will allow my full face and my 1/2 helmet with the same bluetooth module, no repeated pairings.

This is just a harley branded Sena 20s.

Since you have figured out that the Harley unit is just rebranded Sena, my question is will the Sena units that are built into different brand helmets work with the infotainment system?
I just thought maybe it might be nice to just grab a helmet with the system built in so I wouldn't clumsily hit the add on and knock it off the helmet.

The Harley system is compatible with other Bluetooth brands, so you can use a Sena headset with the Harley system if you have a Sena system currently.  We have the Sena Calvary bluetooth helmets with mic and speakers built in, and they WILL mate with the Harley wireless interface module (bluetooth).  We don't have the wireless module added to the bike yet as our riding season is winding down, but I did pair my helmet with a 2018 CVO at the dealer and it worked great.

Once the WHIM is installed on a 2016 Streetglide can you still use the wired headsets or is it wireless only?

Thanks.

Has anyone paired the sc1 system built in to the schuberth c4 and r2 helmets to the WHIM. I believe the system is built by sena. If so how is the sound quality and functionality.
Thanks all😁

The Harley system is compatible with other Bluetooth brands, so you can use a Sena headset with the Harley system if you have a Sena system currently.  We have the Sena Calvary bluetooth helmets with mic and speakers built in, and they WILL mate with the Harley wireless interface module (bluetooth).  We don't have the wireless module added to the bike yet as our riding season is winding down, but I did pair my helmet with a 2018 CVO at the dealer and it worked great.

With Calvary Helmet did you test sound quality? I was thinking of grabbing that Helmet but my other non Harley Sena units plays in bad mono sound quality with WHIM. Current WHIM firmware only allows good sound quality with HD branded Sena units. The WHIM will pair with a "standard" SENA 20S EVO headset, but it will be mono music and lower quality audio. If you buy the Harley-Davidson SENA 20S EVO headset, then you get stereo music and high quality audio.

Update on the additional harness that is listed. If you install a cb on an 18 model CVO Street Glide or CVO Road Glide the cb module just gets plugged into the original harness. You do not need the additional harness. The additional harness is only required when installing the WHIM on a 14 - 17 model touring that has a cb or you're installing a cb.

I installed the BT headset in my full face helmet. It's not too bad. You have to use the headset toggle to set the initial volume for music, communication and prompts. Then you can use the bike volume control to raise and lower volume.

The HD boom wireless headset speakers sound better than the wired head set that came with my 15 CVO Road Glide Ultra.

I listened to them while doing my SS100 and the BB1500 Monday and Tuesday.  The did sound good, not great.  I have not heard better in helmet speakers though.  I am happy with them.

Battery life on the bluetooth module I am not so happy with.  On the way west low battery warning at 6 hours and dead at 7 hours.  On the way back low battery warning at 6 hours but lasted 9 hours.

Then yesterday low battery at 3 hours.

Everything I read says a minimum of 12 hours constant use battery life.  Will contact HD about this.  I have heard some Sena 20 came with bad batteries.  May have to contact them.

I do love not having the helmet cord

What do you use or what is compatible for passenger use?

I found it odd that the bike comes with a single head set. The description makes it sound like a pair.

Is this head set something that can be used on a half helmet?

You have to buy a second headset for the passenger and pair both to the infotainment system.

For a half helmet I’ve heard the Sena half helmet is the best option, music played through the bikes speakers and communications through the helmet. However, that means two half helmets and one more 20s, $900 for the ‘18s and $1500 for ‘14 thru ‘17s

Makes my question if it’s worth that not having to plug up.

The one that comes with the HD or the HD one you can buy is the only one that plays stereo right now in the head sets.

I two expected the bike would come with two head sets.  Not sure on CVO limited but the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide only come with one.

Harley and Sena are aware for the battery life issue.  They are working to figure it out.  They are trying to find out if its a battery issue or a software issue draining the battery.

If the rider or passenger has multiple helmets you can buy a Universal Headset Helmet Kit for the 20S (79.95 retail). It comes with everything you will need to mount it on a half helmet, 3/4 or full face. You can easily swap the 20S module between helmets. If you don't want to use the headset speakers on the half helmet, you just remove one screw that holds the speaker wire in place.  The kit has a cover that fits the headset speaker wire opening after the wire has been removed.

Since you don’t use the sena speakers......if you have a conversation with other person via bluetooth, does their voice come through the boom speaker?

Well, the more we all learn about this, the more reasonable it gets. Now, if I had 6 friends that weren’t so tight with money that they squeak, It might be fun. And when I  think about it, the voice commands over reaching and taking my eyes off the road etc. is worth the $750 especially when I have a big chunk of chrome cash I need to use.

Question, GF rides her own bike, how far will the signal reach? also can she pair her phone to the headset and listen to her own music and I mine, but still communicate with me?

The signal goes almost 2 miles, yes she can pair with her own phone or infotainment system and communicate with you, I’m pretty sure she could pair with your infotainment system and ride her bike at a safe distance apart.

the WHIM and HD branded Sena’s utilizes an AptX enhanced BT protocol that allows Stereo to be play through the head set.

The non-Hd Sena headsets do not support AptX, therefore, music will be in mono.

Will be interesting to see if Sena will offer an AptX headset or has Harley got a non-compete agreement with them.

If Indian, Honda, BMW chose to adopt the protocol would really change the landscape.

Yep, for now, you could just order the clamp and boom mic section of the headset from Harley and use the control section on both helmets without unclamping and reclamping because the clamp part is where the stereo/mono stuff resides.

I made the mistake of paying a lot of $$$ to install the WHIM and replace my wired headsets with HD sena 20s units on my CVO Roadglide 2015.
cram decision, the quality of the sound is crap, the mic sensitivity is TOO sensitive, despite making various configurations changes. The mic activates at around 30-40 mph, when this happens the radio volumes reduces and unable to hear.
I have been working with sena support, although helpful, useless at fixing faults.
If you review Sena in general, you will see that they have a design issue with ALL the products with the mic being too sensitive. Sena support response was to go to HD and get them to fix........
Trouble is, I believe this is a Sena issue and not HD, although I do wonder just how much testing HD did before authorising the switch to Sena. Clearly the test was ZERO, otherwise why would they select such a crap product???

The best I have done is to make config changes in addition adding an extra large cover on the boom mic.  :(
