Race Deck - Garage Flooring
« on: October 14, 2017, 02:28:02 PM »

I recently heard of Race Deck on the Velocity channel. Then I noticed some of our member garages using Race Deck materials. If you have Race Deck or some other comparable flooring, please share your experience.

Are you happy with your Race Deck purchase?
Can you really install it in a few hours? Seems like a full day job to me, if you include moving stuff in and out of the garage.
Did you buy directly from Race Deck or a reseller?
How is the cost? Really high or a good deal compared to other flooring options?
I noticed some of the tiles have holes to "drain" fluids. How does that work? Seems like it would be a mess.
Any other information would be appreciated.

Here's my RD floor.  Pros: Installs easily, can replace pieces that get damaged, can design your floor, and tougher than you'd expect.  Cons: shows dirt more than an epoxy floor, does make a noise when you walk on it (this can be negated by placing landscape cloth down and putting RD floor on top of that).  I'm pleased with my floor.  If you go RD, stay away from the light colors, like yellow and white - they'll be hard to keep clean.

I don't have the RD with holes, so I can't comment on that.  I wash my bike and cars in the garage and I don't have any issues with mold or mildew beneath the RD, and I live in the Deep South.

PM me if you have other questions.

Just did it and I am pretty pleased. Can't speak to oil or fluids yet since it is 2 weeks old. Easy to put down and goes quick, but depending on how much you have to move it may take some time. I used the free flow tiles for the first 2 rows so I can put the snow blower there in the winter and it can drain through the tiles.

Bought directly from Racedeck and they had the best price. Short shipped me 2 tiles and when I called they shipped them with no questions asked.

I'm building a new shop and considering doing the floor with RD tiles.
Do the tiles connect tight enough together to hold water or does it leak through to the floor below?
It looks like you cut the edge tiles to fit at the walls. Any issues with cutting them?

Both floors look great by the way.

Cutting them is no problem.....I used my table saw for an easy straight cut. They fit pretty tight, but I am sure if left there liquid will get through. The bottom is channeled to allow air so that water can evaporate. Oil I would wipe up before it got below the tile, but if it did you can remove a single tile to get to the floor if needed.

They will send samples for you to see so just order 2 samples in different patterns or color and you can snap them together to see the fit.

Thanks Mike! Just curious, did you use 12" or 18" tiles? From the picture I'm guessing they're 18"s. I still may give you a call as I get closer to doing the floor.

They are 12" tiles.....4 of them for each square.

Feel free to call when you want......

I used the RD tiles in my 22x7 scooter trailer. I used aircraft seat tie down and mounted it too the floor first for a flush fit. Had to cut more than I thought, so the job took about 3 days. Have been using for about 4 years and have not had to replace any tiles as of yet. Would use it again tomorrow. Bought on a close out from RD, so I guess I got a good price?

Race Deck tiles with the HD logo in my previous garage.
Move house and working on a new bike room using the same tiles.

Some guys are finding themselves switching allegiance...........from H.D. to Indian. :nervous:

Not sure what color scheme is used by Indian,  does Race Deck have a trade-in policy if a guy needs to get "shed of" the orange and black. :)

I choose the plastic floor from Weathertech ( orange and black, of course). Looks pretty decent, I chose this brand because it has rubber injected into the surface for extra grip; figured  that wasn't a bad idea if I'm pulling in with a wet bike and feet. My only beef is that when the garage is warm, like summer, the floor tiles expand and buckle.  I'll take a picture today and post it.

Here's an install tip from RaceDeck to mitigate tiles buckling up from the heat.  Install your tiles on a hot day and place them in the sun before installing.  This expands the tile out, so when you install it the tile is at its max size.

It was easily and quickly installed, but of course it depends on the surface area and how much you have to pull out to get it down!

One tip:  if you're going to use multiple colors in a pattern and you know how to use a spreadsheet or other design software, do a layout or two on the software to see what you like the best, then buy the tiles you need for it, plus extras of each color.

I didn't break any during installation.  My floor was very easy to install, just get a rubber mallet to help when you need it.  I bought from a reseller, one I could get free shipping from with a minimum amount of tiles ordered.

I've spilled oil on it, and it cleans up well by getting the majority of it up, then wiping with lacquer thinner or a good degreaser.
I've seen no color change, and it is very strong material.  Installation time for me was maybe an hour for a 10' x 10' area; after said area was emptied and cleaned first!

Racedeck website has a design your floor section that will let you pick colors, make the design and then tell you how much of each color is needed.

Here's another brand to throw into the mix, Swisstrax, https://obsessed-garage.myshopify.com/collections/garage-flooring

The guy that started "The Obsessed Garage" swears by them, if you look around on his website he has a couple of video's on the install, he's kind of long winded on all of his video's, I don't have any experience with them, just another brand to look at

after, reading this thread decided to install speedway garage tiles(orange and black). easy to install and colors match from tile to tile. they sell for $1.75. installed a little over 600 square ft.in 10 hrs. most of that was moving all my junk and moving it back in. follow up in few days as to how it performs.

These floors do look good. And yes I too would like them in my garage, however, I use studded tires on the truck, and with the left over water from the snow melt off from it, leads me to think it is not a good  combination.

I'm building a new shop and considering doing the floor with RD tiles.
Do the tiles connect tight enough together to hold water or does it leak through to the floor below?
It looks like you cut the edge tiles to fit at the walls. Any issues with cutting them?

Both floors look great by the way.

I just got my quote back from RD in Utah and it was 7,862.10 for a 2400 Sq foot shop. I have question for all of you that have them installed in your man caves.

1. How do they hold up?
2. Do they stay tight at the joints?
3. Does dirt in between the joints?
4. Do they buckle up?
6. If you were to do it again would you use RD or go with an epoxy chip floor installed at the same cost of just the RD tiles?

Thank you

Haven't had mine long enough to answer all the questions....but......They don't seem to buckle and join together pretty tight. I had the 4' X 8" Harley floor for a few years before doing the whole garage and my Handy lift sat on the floor with a bike on it all winter and didn't leave any marks--if that helps

Just installed Race Deck in my 3rd bay addition. Love it.  I bought mine used off a guy that had 20,000 square feet of it. 1.25 per square foot.

report on speedway garage flooring installed a little over 2 months ago. the fit is still good. no, color change or discoloration from traffic (heavy in door and entrance for vehicles) spills and there has been a few from solvents, fuel and lubricants. overall very happy. hope this helps. :2vrolijk_21:
