Hit a truck tire
« on: October 18, 2017, 07:25:13 AM »

I went on a wild ride this morning and thought I was going down. Air born a bit and a little bar shaking but rode it out. Pulled over expecting to feel bent rims and a leaky tire but no damage what so ever. Quite the thank God moment and hoping the rest of my day is uneventful.

They need to outlaw recaps on big rigs. Just let the top dogs take a little less bonus.

I remember back in my youth, you had a choice of new tires or recaps.  I'll admit $$$$ were hard to come by and I did run a few recaps back then.  But I tried not to run them on the front, only the rear.

You ask the young'ns now what a recap is and they're not going to give you a good answer.

Found the truck pulled over 1/4 mile up the road. He was missing one of the dual tires on the drivers side.

Glad you are OK.  That is indeed a scary situation.  Had a similar experience albeit it in a pick-up truck a couple months ago.  On the interstate in my buddy's Ram truck when all of a sudden from the lanes in the opposite direction rolling clear across the median came an intact full recap.  It had obviously come unbonded from the carcass and was rolling just like it was a full tire.  He did slow down but due to traffic could not maneuver very well.  The recap hit the rear bumper fascia of the car in front of us knocking the fascia loose and then we ran over the recap which had stopped rolling after striking the vehicle in front of us and was now sliding down the pavement on its side.  He straddled the recap driving over it without hitting any of his wheels.  But it was big enough that the when the underside of truck hit it the truck rose up in the air a bit.  Fortunately no damage but it could have been a bad situation just depending on circumstances.  All in all another reason I do not like interstates.  I know it is not exclusive to interstates but imo there is a much greater chance there due to the sheer number of trucks.

Good job avoiding a crash. I avoid riding after dark just because of those chunks of tire out there waiting. Was passing a semi once and heard the noise just in time to duck as it flew over my head. If you ride enough you are bound to have close calls once in awhile.

Glad you are Ok.  I have had similar experiences.  You can hear those tires before they go and when they go usually it is a lot of pieces flying everywhere. As every said that was your lucky day so I hope you bought some lottery tickets.

I know of one guy ridding at night trying to get to Daytona for bike week, ran over a large piece of a retread, (ridding at night, piss poor headlights, interstate, 70 speed limit, trying to make time, too many poor choices) caught between his fender and tire, resulted in the ultimate bad ending.
