Annual Kabuki dance with AT&T U-Verse
« on: November 14, 2017, 04:28:32 PM »

I thought Sirius XM was a pain to negotiate with but AT&T has them beat hands down.  Had U-Verse for several years and first contract was for 24 months.  Since then for only 12 months and have to search, beg and plead for some sort of promo to keep it even moderately affordable.  My current promo expires on Nov 21st and both the 800 customer service and the local office personnel can't find anything nearly as good.  They said check back after the 21st and maybe if I threaten to leave they'll come up with something, lol.  But they certainly are pushing Direct TV big time.

Now I had Dish Network several years ago and really liked it . . . except during heavy rain / thunderstorms as just when the grim faced weatherman was about to tell me I'm gonna die then poof the picture would go out until the weather interference cleared.  And one year a snow and ice event caused a build up on the dish itself necessitating me to climb up on a ladder and chip the ice off the device - not fun in cold icy weather.

Now they tell me Direct TV does not have these problems and at worst might experience slight picture degradation during a weather event.  So just wondering about any experience others have with Direct TV.  How was / is it?  Do you recommend or should I stick with U-Verse or even more tragically change to Comcast  Xfinity with the attendant loss of current 'att.net' email address.

The "weather doesn't effect our service" is pure bullchit. Tell them you have 80' trees on the south side of your house and that will cure them of that. No line of sight to the Dallas area. The satellite hovers right over AT&T headquarters where all your money gets funneled to. You can always have your other half call and place an order to get new customer promotions. She can say she kicked you to the street and wants service in her name. Just make sure you watch all the recordings on your DVR first as there's no reusing it. I've seen that more than once from customers trying to keep a deal going.

Totally understand this issue.  We were fed up with ATT, same sales pitch for Dish.  My wife went on ATT facebook page and threw a fit, basically stated the run around she went through with no resolution and got a pretty quick response.  We ended up with the same package for less than we ever had it for.

Feel your pain, good luck.

1st customer service rep always says no...tell them you have a better offer and you want to cancel then they will put you with a customer retention specialist.  This person can get it done! I do this every year.  My bill went from nearly $270 to $162 and no change in my package. I absolutely hate AT & T UVerse because of their shady dealings, nothing but liars and crooks!  They will lie to get you signed up then when the bill comes it’s a hell of a lot higher but you have no recourse because you are in a contract.  But you can always file a complaint with the FCC if they change the terms of the contract. I had to do this 2 years ago but I’m here to tell you that gets their attention quick and they will do whatever it takes to get you satisfied!  Good luck!

Yup, This works pretty good too. There's a team of people that monitor social media pretty much all the time.

I had U-Verse for quite awhile, but each year it would increase and I would call the retention dept and they would change my plan and it get lowered back down, then it went up high and I called, they said they could not lower it unless I went with Direct TV, The picture and sound are the best, I liked the wireless boxes, I would lose the picture in a major storm, but nothing to get worked up over, but same thing, price keep going up and the only thing they could do is tie my cell service to it, I have ATT but did not want to do that, so I called Spectrum, they where about $50.00 lower for same service, but no whole house DVR or wireless boxes, called back Direct TV and told them to cancel my service called back Spectrum and they installed the next day, so during the install I get a call from Direct TV and they wanted to know why I had canceled since I had been with them a long time, I told them there prices keep going up, she said I wish you would have called because we could do something about that and I said I did call and talked to the retention dept, she apologized and said I should have asked for the "customer loyalty dept" because they could have lowered my bill, I told her she is about one hour to late, Spectrum was here and installing there service, so I thank her and hung up.

So you may want to try the Customer Loyalty Department before you do anything, but I did like the service from Direct TV, who knows if they give me enough $200.00 Visa cards, Maybe I will be back. :)

Thanks for the suggestions - good ones all.  I did post on Facebook and got a response within a couple hours requesting me to private message them with my account number and service address.  I did so but with trepidation since I have no way of knowing if the person who responded was a legit AT&T employee but what the heck I don't see that I could be scammed with just that info.  This morning received a reply saying my account is under review so I guess we'll see if this is legit and works out.  I'll post the outcome once resolved.

Have Direct in the mountains and it totally has weather issues!

Also, deal with ATT for our automotive clients and between them and new technology, it may be our number one dissatisfaction hot button.

Can’t live with ‘em or without ‘em, hang in there!

Your being way to nice, post up on facebook again that you have been waiting x hours and nothing, this isn't rocket science.  This time it doesn't pay to be patient.  They don't want public posts that are not favorable.

Several people we know have Direct TV.  Say it's great yadda yadda.  But when we are over & it's raining they get drops & a lousy picture. And they usually say "It usually doesn't do this."  Except it does, when we are there, and it happens to be raining.  I suppose it must mean we are the Satellite Rain Jinxes.  No other explanation for it...   :nixweiss:

Good luck, hope it goes your way!

Have had DirecTV for 20+ yrs.  Love it.  Only time we lose signal is when there is a very bad storm.  Usually for no more than 10-30 min.  it happens so infrequently, it's not a problem.

Darn it, I thought we were jinxes.   ;D

My neighbors, friends - same deal.   Am looking forward to when we can stream tv more easily instead of cable/satellite.  Some are doing it already, cable, satellite, and telecom subscriptions fall off each year, 22 million less by the end of 2017.

Never heard back from AT&T on Facebook after they said they were reviewing my account a couple days ago.  Did directly contact their customer loyalty department and got a sort of acceptable deal to continue.  Now this was after I visited the local store a couple days ago and the rep there called the same department and could not find anything acceptable.  Jeez I think they make this up on the fly.

They said there might be a better promotion starting in December and I could check back then.  If something better available I could switch to that

I have a headache and think I'll go lie down for a while.  Better yet I think I'll have a beer - or three.

I'd be happy if I could just get straight answers to any questions, be it AT&T or Comcast or whoever.  I have to love how they are allowed to advertise a set price for a service that does not include "mandatory" extras and various bogus fees they try to make sound like a state or local tax but really aren't.  Comcast is the worlds worst in terms of the difference between the advertised price and the actual monthly bill.  Try to get them to tell you what the full price will be when ordering service.  If you still have any hair left after that runaround you have better nerves than me.  My current bill for cable is $40 more than the advertised price for instance, and most people I've talked to have the same problem.  The advertised rate for my package has stayed the same for about ten years, but the actual monthly bill just keeps rising thanks to made-up fees.  Somehow the authorities don't consider this to be a violation of any laws or regulations and they refuse to get involved.

Btw, for those thinking the answer is to just cut the cord and stream everything, the same monopolies that control cable also control internet access in most areas.  Drop your cable service as many have, and watch the price for internet rise along with stricter data caps.  If you start out a "winner" by cutting the cord, you can bet they will change that in short order.

Exactly. A lot of providers will give unlimited data on your home service when bundled with a video service. AT&T included.
