Today's event
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:21:25 PM »

The nice thing about this board is that we share just about everything. I just needed to get his off my chest. Thanks in advance for letting me vent.

I just saved some girls life! Really... I was down at my boat at the Downtown Marina checking on things. I was standing there bullchitting with my neighbor playing with my dog and started walking up the gang plank when there was a body in the water. It was floating face-up drifting. I started calling to see if she was alright. When she didn't respond, I started yell for my buddy and dialed 911. As he and another guy grabbed a boat hook, we were able to pull the body out of the water. I checked for breathing but nothing. I started CPR on her, pressing on her chest. As I was doing this, she started to vomit water that she must have inhaled while going in. At about this time the paramedics showed up.
She had apparently been drinking and was involved in a domestic dispute. I called the hospital but no word as of yet, but they will call me back tomorrow.

I just wonder what would have happened if I had been there a few minutes later or sooner. God does things for reasons we can't explain.
Man, I’m just a little shaken up!
AJ

AJ, you might be shaken up, but you should be damned proud of yourself for waht you did. Timing's everything, but not everyone would necessarily get involved. Excellent job man! :2vrolijk_21: Hoist! 8)

What you did was something that will stay with you for the rest of your life. There are not many people these days that are brave enough to step up to save a person's life. My hat's off to you :2vrolijk_21:

AJ,
Great job :2vrolijk_21: Even though you're not looking for accolades what you did was exceptional. To see the situation as you did and react takes a special person. There are so many that wouldn't/couldn't react as you did. You should feel proud looking at the man in the mirror.

Mark, how'd you know that's where my nickname came from? My friends have been calling me that for years. And that's exactly how it started! You're either pretty good, or pretty lucky (or you remember the comment I made to Candy!). Hoist! 8)

Well I am sorry you had to stumble onto a crime scene, but man oh man, did you do the all the right things all at the right time.  This poor woman was but a glance of your eye away from death, and you being the logical quick thinker you are, were able to get help on the way, begin CPR, and help her on her way to getting better physically. Who knows what is going on in her life though personally?  Domestic dispute?  eye yie yie!  I'd almost not want to know any more about her ........... walk away AJ. just walk away!

Oh and have a stiff drink and try to put the memory behind you.  Thanks for saving a person's life today.  I am proud to know ya man!  I just think ya need to stay away from whatever kharma that surrounds this woman.

Way to go hard10!  :2vrolijk_21:

It's incidences like that that helps a person understand their purpose in life many times. You may never know the effects your actions have caused and the number of people's lives you have changed ,hopefully for the best.
Life threatening events can get the adrenalin flowing and you will "come down" from the effects in time. Hang in there!

Way to go man. I could imagine how shook up that could make you. If you ever see me in that shape, I prefer to have your g/f give me mouth to mouth. Seriously, GREAT job. You should be proud. You are a hero!

AJ,

I know you say you don't want the accolades and all that stuff, but my hat's off to you. Way to go. Nothing like being in the right place at the right time, and having the presence of mind to do the right thing.  :2vrolijk_21: I have never been in a situation like that before, but only hope that if it does ever happen, my actions will be as dead-on as yours. Enjoy your drink, you earned it. WAY TO GO MAN. Can't wait to meet you in September.

AJ, right place at the right time, great job.  Glad you had the training.

I'm involved in a charitable trust through NADA that allows me to give a Resusi-Annie to schools, firehouses, churches etc. once every three years.  My wife also has a trust with NADA, so we donate one 2 out of every three years starting this year and it never stops, goes on in perpetuity.

I don't know that people realize how important it is to know resuscitation.  We just got the employees retrained with First Aid.  Here's a quick link to workplace training info from the Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org/services/hss/courses/PromoSpotweb.wmv

AJ, it sure is great you were there and you know the answer to the question if you hadn't been.

Roger,
Another great tool in addition to training your employees CPR is to have Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AED). They are easy to apply and can give the heart the lifesaving jolt it needs to get it back working. These are totally automatic and will not shock someone unless they have a shockable rhythm. I've seen more and more private business getting these lately. The quicker CPR is started and the heart gets to working back on it's on, the better chance of survival for the patient.

Thanks Gary for mentioning that, we have one on order, they're a bit tough to come by or at least the customer we ordered through seems to be a bit slow, I need to follow up on that.  My employee who is sort of the lead on this figures he'll need to use it on me one day cause I'm old......never know but at any rate they are a great tool and virtually fool proof (as long as you keep me away from it). ::)  They operate on "plug and Play" sort of with the machine telling you the steps as you go.

They let us FF's use them so they have to be idiot proof. ;) Seriously they are really easy to use and come w/diagrams and some talk you thru instructions. They will only shock one type of rhythm so they are for the most part safe for people to use.

AJ,

Dude you rock!!   :bananarock:

We never know from day to day what God has planned for us, but he obviously had big plans for you that day and he still has plans for this young lady since he sent an angel to save her.

Hopefully now that the adrenaline has worn off you can appreciate the magnitude of what you have done.  You kept a cool head a situation that would have caused panic in others.

God Bless You,
Ghost
