Here's some more info. When they grow new shells, their bodies don't fill up the shells. That's why the hard shell ones cost more when their sheddin their shells. The hard shell ones the meat fills the shell.

FYI
As a lifelong Mainiac, and someone who's fished lubstah, my recommendation for the perfect size is 2 1/2 lbs. That's a good meal and the body meat is easy to pick.

B B

B B,

Thanks for the information and know I will be placing it to use.

Now think about my poor position of the South and lack of this knowledge.

Thanks again.

Hmmm, I do need to get the state of Maine colored in for those I've ridden my bike in. Wonder what wifey would say if I said I was going to get lubstah's and returned three - five days later? :nixweiss:

Don't know how well a lubstah would ride back in the tourpak or saddlebag. :nervous:

Dag, and I thought the lubstah I had three weeks ago was tremendous! Wifey took me out to Legal Seafood in Tysons weekend after christmas, I ordered the 3-4 lb lubstah 'cause I aint that experienced with the size of those sucka's...when it arrived hanging over both ends of the plate, the entire restaurant was staring (not very good for someone who is slightly self conscious about eating while being stared at by 150+ people). the thing looked like a Buick-I fondly called it "Lobzilla"...now I know my meal (and then some) was but a humbling experience in comparison to the REAL Maine lubstah's. My waiter came over after I placed the napkin over the remnants and said "you haven't touched your side dishes...", so I stuck my finger in them. It took me three days to get hungry again, this coming from the guy that can eat a half bushel of blue crab as long as the beer keeps flowing...
