Back from the latest surgery.
« on: May 09, 2005, 09:53:01 PM »

A ride report of sorts, I suppose.  Number 9 is down and one to go.

Had a bunch of the hardware removed from my pelvis, Friday afternoon.  Besides being very, very sore, very bruised and stapled up, everything came out well.  I have one more to go, in about a month (artificial hip......both ball and socket).  Then hopefully (if I can believe what they tell me) that'll be the last.

JC, wondered why you hadn't been around for a few days [smiley=nixweiss.gif] (no posts got deleted, [smiley=lolk.gif]), now I  know why.  I guess what you're saying is good news, though it sounds very painful.  You'll be in my prayers for a speedy and thorough recovery.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Now it won't be any fun anymore to be around JC with one of those big truck mounted construction/demolition/recycling electromagnets  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] .

JCZ, this is the best news. I am so sorry you are still enduring so much pain and suffering, may the Drs be right in their assessment that you have only one more surgery to go. Any surgery is too much for me.  We have truly missed you here. I was thinking about you a lot, glad you have limped back up to the computer. Speedy recovery wishes. and so sorry we missed your birthday!   [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=6.gif] [smiley=7.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Sorry Chip but  it just won't happen.  If I'm able to ride, it'll be ridden.

The biggest patch on my vest says it clearly "It's the journey........not the destination"  all the rest of my patchs say "Rode Mine.....Milwaukee 03", "Rode Mine....Sturgis 02", "Rode Mine......Street Vibrations xx", "Rode Mine.....xxxxxxxxxx", "Rode Mine......XXXXXX".  Hey brother, I have a reputation to live up to........ [smiley=laugh.gif]

Thanks to all of you for the well wishes and prayers.  It hasn't kept me down.......as a matter of fact, I'm thinking I should try to get on it tomorrow.  200 stapels in my gut and I still gotta ride........it's in the blood. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

JC, this is gonna be gross but given your post above it just has to be shared.  My dad, God love him, in the last several years before he passed had a whole host of medical issues.  And he just kept right on plugging along.

There was this one spring where some of his plumbing had to be re-routed.  Had to get a colostomy.  The doc did the work.  Discharged him from the hospital a couple of days later.  And sent a note of all the things not to do.

Well now Dad, being Dad, took it literally.  If the note didn't mention something he wanted to do and he'd decided he wanted to do it than you can damn well bet he was going to be out there doing.  The note didn't mention  not riding the bumpy old riding mower over the not completely smooth two acre yard.  And Dad decided he wanted to mow.

Of course there was a problem.  Things kind of bounced loose a bit.  Some work had to be redone.  Doc asked "what happened."  Dad responded "I was mowing the f***ing yard!  It wasn't on the list gawda**it!!"

I laughed.  Doc just shook his head.

I miss my Dad.

Cabo, haven't saw you on here for awhile.  Yea, when it gets closer I'll shoot you me cell phone.  Andy (AK) and a few others that were on here a year or so ago, will be there.  Andy has a condo in Santa Cruz, right on the beach, and plans a big bar-b-que on one of those nights.  He mentioned that he'd like to invite you, too.

Some of you may find this a little interesting.  Here's a photo of the hardware that they  removed from my pelvis.  Normally, they don't remove it once it's in however, this stuff was in the way of the artificial hip (ball and socket both) that they're sceduled to put in, in a couple weeks.  You'll also notice a small piece of the larger plate that they had to cut out (it's stainless steel) to get to the screw underneath it.  Truely bionic.  There is still much hardware left in my pelvis, arm, leg and jaw.

Sure hope you are finding ways to manage the pain. It will be so great to have the next surgery done and the healing started from that one.  I suspect that it is going to be a long summer for you JCZ. One just never knows what can happen when you walk out your door one day and some event turns your world up on it's ear.  You have been so good to share with us, thank you. I am sure we are all wishing you a very speedy recovery.    [smiley=laugh.gif]

Had the surgery Thurs. night and I just got home.  Feels kind of strange, for the past year my left leg has been shorter than my right, due to the accident.  Now it' the same length, due to the artificial hip and now I think I have to learn to walk all over, again.

I'm in bed, on the lap top and still have a recovery period of at least a month and probably longer........before I can ride again.......but I'm sure lookin forward to it.  Just for the record, it will not be in a trailer and it will not be for ice cream. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

So what's gonna happen is that the wife will be riding in front and JC will be riding in back (for ice cream)  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] .  Maybe she'll get him a sidecar  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Ok, seriously for a moment, glad your home man.  Learn to use the new parts and get any rough machinings worn smooth so you can hit the road at speed  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Hi JC, good to hear from you..I'm glad you are home and done with that one..you will be in the wind before you know it. Take care and don't rush things. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

O.K. I got a "get well" card via the mail and AK, that was signed "The entire gang at FLHRSEI.ORG".  However, with a little research and help from one of the other moderators I have tracked the initiators to MR. and Mrs. We CVO.  I'd just like to say thank you to both of you and tell you that I appreciate the thoughts! just a thought - and maybe related to this thread - but it is easier having met each other and have spent time face to face to know the quirks about someone - i have not had the opportunity so therefore when a post is made there is no facial gesture with it - no tone of voice - no hand gestures - so it is so to speak - just writing on the wall and can be taken however one's frame of mind is at the time - this is not a post on this thread it is just a thought as reading thru a few of them - and may I reply to myself - I have also struck this nerve with a couple here and it was also not meant to cut someone's throat - it was just my sense of humor (and my humor to blow things off is job related and 60's drug related flash backs) so thank you for allowing me to post and a bow of the head as i head back off into my corner

You got me laughing so hard on all this nonsense.  You are so very right Shovel. And what one person may perceive as funny now and or later, one cannot tell. In person this dance is easy to channel because of the facial or body expressions, but in text.... mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmm mmm.  I work remotely from all my coworkers and they sometimes think I am not very nice because my very cryptic responses to their requests as simply "Done" is not enough team building, so I have to work at writing more and being more personal in my communications.  Now everyone, let's get together and ride our bikes somewhere exciting.  Let's see where can we go?   http://www.motorcycleplayground.com/Roads/129/roads129.html

Maybe we need another rule about posting that all comments have to be taken with a grin and a pinch of good humour. I am guilty myself of taking things the wrong way from time to time and then responding to it.... ugh!  Try not to, but we will have to try to smile a little more at the hijinks here. It is way to much fun to get worked up about.   [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Hey Van get well soon.  Hopefully, somebody knows where one is available.  In the meantime, get your HOG map book (it has all the dealerships listed) and start contacting all the Calif. dealerships.  Good luck with it.........hope you're able to join us in Sept. in Reno!

Thanks for asking Chip.  No, haven't been riding yet.  My physical therapist was here today and he asked the same thing.  I replied "negative" and he questioned me further "you sure you haven't been on that bike yet?".  He thinks my recovery level at three weeks is comparable to most people at six to eight weeks.  Hell, when he told me that I replied " great, then I'll give it another week or two before I get on the bike and that should be comparable to the three months that the Dr. requested that I wait." [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I really do feel like I could get on it and go right now.  The resistance for them is the first 90 days is when a new artificial hip will dislocate if it's going to.  After that, the tissue and muscle has grown back to hold it from moving out of socket.  So that's what it's all about.  Pain wise is almost nil.

What date approx is that 90 days!

Good deal on the recovery!
Don't mess it up by riding and dislocating.

I'm expecting to see you in Reno
And that AK, sounds like he's as crazy as you!

And so the story goes.........got back on my bike at about 6:00 P.M. and rode with a partner till about 11:00 P.M.  Man it felt good to ride with no pain.  The first time in over a year that I've rode that bike and did not have major pain in the hip everytime I shifted or put my foot down at the stop lights.  Totally pain free and it was really nice!

No problems.......no dislocation.  I'll be riding from this day forward.  I will take it easy getting on and off (hyper-extension is what causes the dislocation that the Drs. warn me about so strongly), for awhile.  But it really felt just fine.......like it did before my accident.  I'll never take these legs for granted again.
