SE Road Glide O/B with tour pak
« on: October 02, 2008, 03:54:36 PM »

Have as yet not installed luggage rack or back rest, got some surgery coming up & need to install vinyl on top and front of pak first, so I thought I'd post these for those wondering if they wanted a tour pak on this new model.  With the new HD attached ponits install & take off is even ezer than before.

Looks really good as expected. I should be receiving my tourpak, lowers and some more goodies in the next week or two hopefully. I already have about 1/2 of what I ordered and have been busy personalizing the SERG the last few weekends when I have the parts I need and time on my hands.

Looks great, what kind of emblem is on the top and did it come with it?  Did you go with a hidden antenna as well?

Hmmm, makes me wonder.  When my cracked and spiderwebbed silver tourpack came, it already had holed drilled for the rear antenna.  That also swayed me in removing my hidden antenna and going back to the standard.  Looks very nice on your scoot.  Congrats.

Your bike looks great! I agree this is how they should've been shipped.... TP,Lowers, driver's backrest. But man what'a ride just got back from Bikes, Blues & BBQ (Fayetteville AR) 1200+ miles and all the add on's were worth it!
BTW with over 200K bikes only 2 other 09 FLTRSE3's both silver.

I just got my tour pack and lowers today.  They look great.  The only part I'm waiting on is the passenger seat back.  I should have it in a few days.  I'll upload pics as soon as I can.

I like the look, does it require adding the 4 point kit, or can u use the 2 point that comes with the bike?

Here is a pic of my new SERG that was purchased 3 weeks ago in Oregon.

Johnny-  The TP does require the four point kit.   What kind of windshield did you go with?  It looks good, do you have a pic from the front.

Very nice guys!!  Beautiful bikes.  Johnny, I like the chome streaks on top of the saddle bags.  Put them on my 04 RG and they're a nice touch.  Just got the Yellow SERG and the T Pak is on order....

Jonny Mac, what dealership in Oregon did you purchase your SERG from? Also, did you keep the bike in Oregon or do you live elsewhere?

Any one running the tour pak in the solo position?  Does that require the 4 point mounting kit or the 2 point?

I am pretty sure you would have to have a solo seat to run it in the solo position.

You would no doubt need a solo seat to mount the tour pack in the solo position.  The stock seat will not work with it.

I doubt it will work with the stock mounts for the sissybar.  I have the two-up mount and it isn't even close.

You know, IMO, the leather tour pack looks great on a nostalgic looking bike, such as a RK Classic or Heritage.  The SERG is a slik streamline bagger, I'm not sure the big buckles and such will go well.   :nixweiss:

You dont have to purchase the other mounting kit, this should help you out.  I found it today.  Is anyone installing the tp themselves.  I'm just a little bit eary of drilling holes in something I paid 1100 for!!!

None of those are "09" part numbers. They won't work on an "09" SERG.

I'm running two-up and had to buy the docking hardware kit for mine (54205-09).  Knowing moco, you probably have to buy something to get the solo pack to work.  One more way to extract money out of us.  FYI, we had to remove my OEM bracket to install the docking hardware.  My sissybar will work with the new one, but the tour pack would not mount without it.  Looking at the tour pack mount, it doesn't look like it will line up with the old one in any position.

Yea, sure would be a costly mistake if you drill it wrong.  I had a dealer install it for me.  Figure if they screw it up, they can buy me a new one.  I'm sure I could have done it, but it wasn't worth the hassle.  I had them prep it then rode the bike to them.  They installed it while I waited.  It took them 2 hours to set it up.  It is not as easy as one would think.

Drilling is a no brainer.  The bottom of the tour pack has a metal plate with 4 holes in it.  Point the drill bit at the holes and drill through.  On the outside, put some masking tape and that will stop it from chipping.  I've drilled through my 06 pack when installing speakers and a top rack and it was a piece of cake!

Ok, I made my first attempt at installing the tp, yet, with negative results.  Sblair, I drilled the holes as per moco's instructions, I went the extra mile and taped the bottom of the tp, so as to not scratch or damage the lovely paint.  I placed the detachable rack onto the motorcycle, lined up the tp, and intalled the screws as per the Moco's instructions.  However, the hex head screws provided do not fully go through the tp mounting plate, tp, and then the rack.  It seems as if they are at least 1/4" to 1/2" too short.  I read over the instructions again and again and I was following the directions right.  :nixweiss:  It's enough to drive me to  :drink: :givemebeer:

So, I will take my pack of hex heads, washers and locking nuts to the dealership and meet with a tech about it.

PS.  My spoiler/wing with leds arrived today as well.  But after reading the instructions, I'll leave that up to someone with some electrical knowledge.

Be careful using acorn nuts for that application. They can easily vibrate loose and fall off. HD has special locking nuts for mounting the TP's to the rack. ;)

Well...at least you got your TP.  When Mine came, the top was cracked and spider-webbed, the hinge pins fell out because there was no lock screws on the end, the bottom of the lanyard was also missing the screw and there were 8 bolts rolling around loose ( 4 long and 4 short).
So now I'm waiting for them to repaint it (mind you!).  You dont get a new one, you get your piece of chit new one repainted!   :nixweiss:
Good luck Mike.  Your local hardware store should be able to hook you up.

Be careful using acorn nuts for that application. They can easily vibrate loose and fall off. HD has special locking nuts for mounting the TP's to the rack. ;)

Interesting comment Hoist.  My dealer installed the tp on my bike.  They didn't mention that they changed the hardware from what was in the kit.  MoCo could have sent it that way or they did it on their own.  Your point, however, is valid.  I could see these backing off without realizing it.  I'll ask the dealer about it the next time I am out there.

I bet mine did too.  The dealer would have charged me if they had to supply new hardware.  They are installed with locking washers, which should help keep them from backing off.  I'm going to stop by the dealer sometime this week.  I'll ask when I'm out there.

Some acorn nuts are self locking, with nylon inserts.  If not, blue loctite will take care of any worries.

Here is the finished product.  I took it a step further and installed the wing with the led.  Except for I didn't connect the led's to the bike.  I snaked the wires through as the manual stated.  However, I'm not electrician and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express either!

at the 1k  service, I had the dealership install a hidden antenna.

Thanks! :2vrolijk_21:

I got a buddy that does pinstriping on the side.  He's done my helmet and I told him I want to mimic the striping on the bike. At least with the red three stripes down the side.  He's not good enough to do the eagle.  But just something on there would look alright.  Maybe just on the top.  Just thinking about it now.  Going on Friday to get the brake light hooked up on the wing.  Unless Jim Ker and fly down here and do it!!!  :2vrolijk_21:  Jim Ker is the Macgyver of SERG's!!!

Did you do the glove boxes?

I have a Heavy Breather on the right side.  It would make the box unusable, so I can't install one on the right.  I have the one on the left side, but am seriously thinking about pulling it.  The glove box is a nice bit of extra storage, but I doubt I will ever actually use it.  It is not something that would be easy to access while driving and doesn't have a lot of space.  It is also one more thing to get in the way when I remove the lowers in the summer.

It should come like that from the MOCO.

I couldn't agree more.  I think the lowers look great.  They also work very well.  It has been in the mid 40's and low 50's in Chicago this week.  I was riding around on the freeway, along the lake, etc. and was staying warm no problem.

Did you tint your KW, it looks darker.  PS I'm doing my speaker and amp upgrade next week.

I have the 8" KW installed on the bike at the moment.  It is the blacked out version.  I didn't tint it.  It works better than the stock shield, but that isn't saying it is good -- it isn't!  Local driving is fine, but it is worthless at keeping the cold Chicago wind off of me at any speed and it sucks on the highway (noise, wind, bugs, etc).

I'm going to put a large clearview on for the winter.  It isn't as sexy as KW, but it will actually live up to its name (Wind Shield).  I may even keep it on.  CV makes a darn good shield.  The quality is a million times better than KW and most of the others I've seen.  The plastic is thicker, they box and ship it properly, they provide all of the needed install hardware, they include the rubber gasket, they have an extra gasket that seals form water coming in from behind the shield, customer service is excellent, etc.

The lowers look great - I was interested to see if you'd go orange or black - I like the black.

Take the glove boxes out and have them modified to fit a 6 1/2" speaker (I suggest Polk Momos - they are marine grade). Then add the Hawg Tunes 4 ch amp and matching 5 1/2" speakers in the fairing and you will have a killer sound system. Even better, swap the head unit for the Sony model that comes with the adapter (so it works with the standard controls). You can even put an integrated iPod hookup on there (charge, play and control). Schweet!!

Besides, what's another $2k amongst friends...

BB

This project sounds fun.  I might do that at some point.  The biggest issue I have right now is that my Heavy Breather on the right side protrudes into where the right glove box lives.  I can't install the right box and probably can't modify it to fit a speaker either :(

How does the heavy breather affect you leg room?

How does it do in the rain?

I bump the heavy breather every now and again, but it really isn't much different than the stock breather.

It is designed to work in the rain.  It has a cover that you can put over it in heavy rain.  The cover also looks cool.  It has the SE Eagle on it.

Thanks Jim!  What would be even more cool, if I could get it to do a night rider pattern, back and forth!  Ok, well, maybe not, but it sounded good.

The Knight Rider LED would be cool!  Never the less it looks awesome!

How hard was it to splice into the break lights?  Is it plug and play or do you need to splice/solder?  Did you install a quick disconnect so you can remove the TP easily?

There was some splicing and solder involved, but I left it up to an "expert", a local motorcycle paint shop here locally.  He's an HD tech and opened up his own deal.  I paid $20 for him to wire it up with quick disconnects that you can hid under the seat.  You have to pull off the left saddle bag and cover, the wire will be in there.  You splice and souder there.   He spliced and soudered to give me me another foot or two.  If you do the HD length, it's apparently really tight and your connection is exposed.

The TP is on for the weekend, we have an overnight trip for our anniversary.  Were going to Copperhead lodge and coming home on Sunday.  I need to get a wall mount for my TP.

Are you and the Mrs. headed past (or near) me on your way to Copperhead? I'd love to buy you a cup of coffee in the morning on the way up. Exit 8 off 575.

I appreciate the offer!  But I don't know what time Jennifer will be ready to go.  I wanted to go at the crack of dawn, she translates that to the crack of noon!  Just kidding, we'll probably be heading up 575 around 10 or 11.  We have to hightail it to the lodge to drop off our frozen Vegas wedding cake.  I guess we are supposed to eat it on our 1st anniversary!

We definitely need to hook up though!  If I don't do Biketoberfest nest weekend, lets try to ride up by your neck of the woods.

Not right now, but maybe later.  I kind of like taking the tp off and having the bike stripped down.  The saddle bag lights maybe to much, sometimes less is more.

Hey All,

I'm new to this Forum. It looks like the place for CVO info. Just picked up my CVO Road Glide last week (Silver). I have the tour pack on order. I would have thought that for $1199.00 it would have had matching graphics on it rather than just one color. Must be really expensive paint.

Cheers, Ken  8)

         Ken,
Welcome to the site or forum as some refer to it. I think you'll find it an enjoyable place to hang out and share stories of rides, swap tech tips and in case you're not aware, we have unofficial gatherings around the country that give you a chance to meet the folks live and in person.
As regards your tour-pak, I am astounded that it has no graphics. Unbelieveable. Does that price include the mounting rack or is that just for the ABS box ?

That's right Brian just a ABS Box with some very expensive MOCO paint. No Graphics like the 04-05 SEEG have.

So how does it work out if you buy one in primer and have it painted ?

I expect it would cost about $450 or so to have one painted.

You know Neal since I first saw this post, I've been asking myself the same thing. The one I bought for LD has a black panel and pinstriping and it was the only one in the Mirage Orange Pearl in the P&A book.  But I think the 00 and 01 SERGS were single color I see Chip lurking about, maybe he'll read this and chime in, but they also came with a lighted tour-pak spoiler and were mounted on the bike, so of course it's hard to guage the cost because they were OEM.
