maybe clear up the KW windshield
« on: December 05, 2008, 04:23:54 PM »

just some info I discovered on the way to other things   ...

K W change their 12 inch windshield around august-september   ...   if  your roadglide windshield
is older than that, sitting on a table it would be 9.75 inches tall measured straight up   ...
if it is newer than that, they changed the angle slightly and it would measure 11.5 inches

that maybe be why some think it's too short while others are okay with it   ...
bought mine in august and  just reorder the new one   ...    wil post my opinion on
                           the difference when it arrives

                                                                                             wts

KW was measuring the actual windshield material from top to bottom (which is at an angle) not the actual rise in height.

I'd be curious if my radio would clear the new version. :nixweiss:

I called KW to inquire about their 16 inch windshield that is coming "soon"

I tried the latest version, buffeting at 70 mph felt like it could remove paint from my helmet, they are designed to hold the front end down at high speeds not wind protection.

"they are designed to hold the front end down at high speeds not wind protection."

Well they haven't proved to be doing that well. my front end keeps wanting to come off the ground, oh but that's my fault, can't blame it on the windshield.

Since I installed my new Corbin the buffeting is minimal

Is the stock windscreen that comes on the bike really that bad in the wind? If so, why would Harley waste their time putting it on there? I like the looks of the 12" tinted KW much better than the stock shield, but I don't want to waste my money on a KW "just for looks only" if it won't help that much to deflect wind (I'm 6' tall, always wear a helmet and would prefer air to flow just over my head on longer trips). Thanks for all input. My O/B SERG is scheduled for delivery in late March, and I can't wait!!! :orange: :bananarock:

The Stock SERG windshield is for aesthetics only, it is absolutely worthless for wind protection, the Klockwerks 12in is only slightly better, The Clearview recurve is far superior, even a stock 12 in RG windscreen does a much better job.

I've got both the Clearview 12" GT small and the KW 12"   ...   I see little difference
                                         except in appearence

Just like dartman said, worthless is right.  At 6 feet tall the wind is going to go, right up your nose.  The windshield and the oil cooler hoses Harley got an F on this one.  Let's Roll

Did the Moco not improved this in the meanwhile ?
This would be the best I guess .
The owners of the SERGs should complain directly at the h-d headquarters , perhaps they react on such kind of complains ?

It wouldn't be that much effort to buy either regular neoprene oil line or braided stainless and re-route these yourself. Even thing you'd need is readily available. And if you end up with lines that are several inches longer than stock- - - - - - - well extra oil in your system is always a good thing.

as you can see the angle changes ever so slightly   ...   and you pick up an inch or so in height

I'm 5'10" ( both tall and wide ) and the klock werks works for me

I just rode from Key Largo to Key West last week with a baseball cap on, bill facing forward

if you're 1/2 inch taller it might not stay on

WTS is your flip up screen hitting the widshield? Mine did on the old 12" and that is why I didn't run it.

with the old 12 it touched only coming out and going in   ...   I could pull on the top of the screen
and it worked without touching   ...   didn't touch while running

with the new 12 it doesn't touch at all   ...   has 1/2 inch behind it or more

WTS, thanks for the info. and pictures.
Did you find the new one more sturdy than the older one.  I have heard complaints about flapping in the wind, vibration etc./

I just got back from Key West   ...   rode about 2200 - 2300 miles

if it flapped I didn't notice it   ...   and I rode at about every speed at one time
                                                       or another

I look about an inch over the shield, but honestly wasn't watching for movement
                                                       so I couldn't say it didn't

by the way, this is my first Roadglide   ...   last year I rode my SEEG so I really
                                                       don't know how to compare

sorry to be so wordy   ...   but if you ask me what time it is I'll tell you how to
                                                       build a watch

                                                                             thx

P.S.             not trying to be a smart donkey   ...   but when I pass about sixty
I watch the rode a lot closer

lotta potential road kill in my area

I must have been a bad boy cause I got the shorter 9.5 inch in Oct after waiting a month and a half. I was told the wait was for a new production run. Hum. To top it off, it fit crappy and the bottom needed trimming. Had that 1959 experimental one off snowmobile look. Spose KW will give me a brake on the new one. I,m guessin not....  :-\

it don't hurt to ask   ...   it's got the same part number as the old one, so you need them tom measure it before they ship

it took 'em 3 tries to get mine right   ...    that's right they sent me a windshield 3 times   ...

when the right one got there I sent the other two back   ...   they sent me a return fed/x label

                                                                                                     just work it

                             and the new

WTS Looks like that foam you use on the fairing may give the shield more rize height. Is that it ?   Thanks Doc

I don't think so   ...    when I bought the clearview, it came with a piece of foam like

the one you see now   ...   didn't like the looks of the clearview, but did like

way the foam worked   ...    so

I bought myself a piece of foam strip and used it on the klock werks   ...   but not

knowing the exact curvature I mount the foam to the seam in the fairing,

not the plexiglass   ...    when I got the new shield I didn't even change the foam

                                                                 Hope that's clear
                                                                                                thx

P.S.   if you set both the new and the old windshield on a flat surface ( ie. a desk )

and measure vertical to the desk, the new one is taller

                                                                                     thx

Hey folks ,
Vic Briggs from Klock Werks just have sent me the message that the new 16" flare will be out in about 4-6 weeks .
Do you think it is worth to wait or order the Clearview Medium .
Hmmm ???????

I went out and tried to duplicate your measurements on my bike.  ;) It looks like the new version isn't going to work for me either. My flip up screen sits farther back than your. I beleive it will make contact with the windshield.

It places the Navigation right in front of you, or in my case in my one ear! IMO it is cleaner looking than a portable unit mounted to the handlebars. Than add that my 01 radio was limited at best so when replacing it why not upgrade a little?!.

Rear view camera also.

What's the Kenwood Model Number?

What brackets & connectors did you use to mount the radio? Does it integrate with the factory hand controls?

I am posting pictures of the old 12 inch klock werks and then the new kw 12 inch

I definitely like the more "flaired" style of the old KW 12" better. Any word on their new 16" yet? I'm sure they'll have it on display at the Dealer Show in Cincinnati in mid-February. I don't want too tall a shield on my new SERG (coming in March). I think a big windshield defeats the design intent of this bike...might as well get an SE Ultra.
Just my 2-cents... :nixweiss:

I thought the same thing until I ht the X Way, if your bike is going to leave the drive way for any length of time you will not tolerate a 12in KW for very long unless style takes precedence over suffering.
