GAWD - What replacement tire to use?? I NEED HELP!!!!
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:47:42 AM »

Hey Bros
Have an '07 SERK that's in dire need of new tires. My OEM front is cupping really bad (Elite 3's) and I hafta find something to put on.
The absolute only thing that I can find to fit are the Dunlop 407's - other than that nothing - nothing - nothing.
My dealer has looked and looked and says there is nothing out there that will work other than the Dunlop 407's.
So - any suggestions or should I just go with the 407's and be done with it???
Why is it so frickin' difficult to find a decent tire for my SERK????
HELP!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!
Greg

Dunlop Elite 3 130/70-R18 63H Dunlop #4080-78

This is the same as the discontinued HD Elite 3. Any bike shop that can get Dunlop can order one. You need to stay with the D 407 rear, as Dunlop doesn't offer anything else. That's available thru HD. Weird stuff!

New to the Dunlop® Harley-Davidson® tire series, the D407 with Multi-Tread technology has been specifically engineered and tested by Dunlop and Harley-Davidson development teams for fitment as original equipment on Harley-Davidson’s entire 2009 FL Touring series.

Dunlop’s Multi-Tread tire design features three zones of differing tread compounds that provide riders with optimum performance under varying riding conditions. The high-wear compound in the center of the tire tread runs cooler to provide stability, excellent traction under braking and long tread life. Lateral grip compounds flank both sides of this long-wearing compound to enhance traction at higher lean angles. Net result: more grip when cornering.

In addition, bold, angled lateral grooves in the tread pattern carry water away from the tire contact patch on wet roads. And the reinforced multi-layer tire carcass gives the D407 maximum strength for long life while also providing great handling at all speeds and lean angles.

Dunlop and Harley-Davidson engineers first tested these multi-compound tires as models in computer simulations, then tested them to extremes in the lab, and finally rode many thousands of hard test miles to ensure the D407 delivers performance that clearly surpasses current standards.

These new Dunlop MT technology touring tires are available in black sidewall, wide whitewall and classic narrow white bar versions.

Thanks to Dunlop’s Multi-Tread design, Harley-Davidson owners can now enjoy the benefits of the best tire technology in the business.

The D407 comes in a 130/80B17 D407F BSW front and 180/65B16 D407 BSW rear for the following models: Electra Glide® Standard, Street Glide™, Road Glide®, Police Road King®, Police Electra Glide® and Screamin’ Eagle® Ultra Classic® Electra Glide®.

The front 130/80B17 D407F NWB and rear 180/65B16 D407 NWB D407 fit these model Harley-Davidsons: Road King®, Electra Glide® Classic and Ultra Classic® Electra Glide®.

For the Road King® Classic, use the D407 in a 130/90B16 D407F WWW front and a rear 180/65B16 D407 WWW.

The 130/70B18 D407F BSW front and 180/55B18 D407 BSW rear are made for the Screamin’ Eagle® Road Glide®, Screamin’ Eagle® and Softail® Springer®.

I'm ordering a set of Metzeler ME880 radials for mine.  As Howie said, you can still find the Elite 3's if you look hard enough.

You ride solo Travis, so you can get aweay with that. Everyone needs to know that you give up substantial weight rating with the ME880 radials for the '07/'08 SERKs. ;)

Been running ME880s on Thumper for awhile now.......can't remember how long.......almost a year I'd guess.  The purple bike just got a new set of Michelin Commanders.  Haven't ridden it yet.  Been wanting to try a set of those, and if I like 'em on the FLHR, then the green bike will get a set next tire change.  The Metzelers are great tires.  Really like them, and I may keep 'em, but my curiosity about the Michelins has been piqued, therefore, I gotta give 'em a try.

You could ride solo too if you would let Binx ride one of your other bikes.   ;D

Busy, busy.  I hope to see you there, a lot of things still have to fall into place between now and then for us to make it though.  Hopefully Ken will be thawed out and have electricity by then so he can be there as well.   :coolblue:

I've always had tremedous results from Metzeler ME880's. Ran them on my 02 RG from the time the Duncraps wore out. Absolutlely no complaints, and will put them on the SERG if they have coverage by the time I'm ready for new tires.

My tires have 11000 miles on them, the wear in the middle is ( the leading edge of the tread pattern becomes worn )
