Replace the lifters?
« on: December 07, 2005, 06:59:21 PM »

Head Quarters "recommends" replacing the lifters with any cam change. But how necessary is it? I have the SE lifters w/ 16,000 mi on them. Don't really want to change them if I don't have to.

Well, if they're like automotive applications, they really do get mated to their cam lobes on break-in, and I'd always opt to replace them with the cams.

They are roller lifters. So as long as the roller has no nicks or marks , they nor the new cams could care less.  Use your lifters.

Unlike the lifters in a pushrod automotive engine, the Harley's come with roller lifters.

Bigtime,

While they may look good, I woiuld just replace them anyhow.   They arent expensive enough to throw a used set a new build up.   Your already in there and your going most likely use adjustable pushrods so for me its a no brainer with 16k miles on them.   I would rather pull the old ones out label em and stick them with the old cam.   As a matter of note while going through this I would aslo consider putting in schim from Zippers for Oil pump alignment and or a reed valve from S&S.

If in fact they are screamin eagle replacement and not the stock lifters that came in the bike KEEP THEM. They are actually Jims lifters and work very well.

So the SE roller lifters are Jims products?  I picked up a set last last weeekend at my stealers "bargain table" for $69.  Even a blind hog finds a acorn every now and then...

Are all of the adjustable pushrods also "easy install", in that you don't have to remove the rocker covers?  Or do you need to specifically buy ones labeled "easy install" to eliminate removing the rocker covers?

If you don't replace lifters know when doing the cams,  with the adjustable pushrod it is no big deal to change them later if you want.
