Mark, that clamshell type clamp around the Garmin unit is exactly the mount I saw a 2610 fly out of in a big bass boat at about 50 mph one day.  Wasn't super smooth water so that had to weigh in to it as well.  But it was watching that thing fly out that one time that made me get the other mount that actually locks to the GPS unit.

Couldn't think of anyone to describe where it would make sense without seeing Mark.  So grabbed the camera for some quickies.  Forgive the lack of any background or anything else to make the pics sharper.

With those part numbers I posted here is everything that has to travel with me for the GPS unit.  I got the little bag too for convenience.  It holds the GPS unit, all the parts and has room for a couple or extra shop rags.  Just makes a convenient place to keep everything together when it comes off the handlebar for overnight at a hotel.

The black stuff on the u-bolt is two thicknesses of heat shrink.  The "wad" in the cable is the audio connection all sealed up and tied out of the way as I never use it.

Instead of a cradle this kit actually uses a clamp.  Here's what it looks like from the back of the unit.

From the front in the driver's seat you never even see most of it.  Really just have to look at the locking part of the clamp.  That's what is sticking up above the GPS unit here.

There's a ridge or catch you lift up on from the back side to release the unit's "safety" or locking system.  You know it's released when you see the red band.

When the safety is off the GPS unit pops out of the clamp with only minimal effort.  In the pic you can see the catching points on the bottom.  There are similar points on the top as well.  But when you push the locking clamp back down it makes a very positive catch on the unit.  I think you could rip the unit out of the carrier if you wanted to.  But it wouldn't be easy.  When the lock is pushed down (no more red band) it's got a set screw in the top. Tighten it down with a little keychain attached driver they supply with the unit and it can not release on its own.

With this setup there is no side to side wiggle.  The fingers and toes of the other type of clamshell can't relax tension with wear or time either.  Having felt a 2620 in both types of holders this thing was just a lot more secure.  And it only cost a tiny bit more.

Thanks Don,
Good pics, Ya I can see how that mount would be much better than this one.
It looks as though it might have somewhat increased range of movement than the one I have, which would be an added bonus. But indeed the clamping action/or positive lock mechanism is what I'll want.
Another smart item is the molded recess that locks in the cable, thats sweet
Thank for posting the pics, I'll get that asap.

Don,
Another thought,
You did away with the audio on that cable. Do you have another for your car?
I want to get a second feed line for mine, 1 for the car with the speaker unit, and a second one that I'd like to modify, do away with the audio, as you mentioned on the bike it's useless and it's to big in the 12v plug.
If you can remember the lines that were removed let me know. If not I'll get it done.
I'll find a wiring diagram for it.
Thanks bro, [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Mark, the cable you saw in those pics with audio feed unused is that accessory cable that can be bought after the fact or is supplied with some of the mount kits.  It's a cut-to-whatever-length-you-want for the power and a mini mic jack popping out of it's middle for the audio.  I cut it to a proper length for the lighter plug on the inner fairing and it hangs there never getting in the way of anything.  Whenever the GPS unit gets moved to a cage I just use the combo power/speaker cable that came with it.  For the audio, however, I didn't open the shielding on the cable to get rid of it.  Just covered the end of it with heat shrink for better weather protection then bundled it tightly to keep it out of the way.  The way it hangs behind the GPS unit you really never even know it's back there.  But if ever needed someday it'll still be available.

Glad you noticed that notch to hold the cable on the bracket too.  I'd forgotten about it.  But it is a flawless hold for something that otherwise can get wobbly going down the road at highway speeds.

Nice, I thought you chopped yours, that's even better. I'll try to get one soon. Doesnt look like a big rush seeing as the weather is quickly running out around here. There wont be a big need at the moment.

No sweat.  That's what this place is good for.  Mark, the cable and the cradle come together at this part number.  It'll be both of the pieces you're talking about getting for cheaper than buying them separately.
