shut down clunk...
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:57:55 PM »

I have heard (or read) that some have had this shut down clunk and had the SE compensator installed.

Was that a warrantee item?  Did it fix the clunk at a shutdown?

Thanks in advance,
Mal

Mal, I'm assuming you have the 2010 model SESG.  If my assumption is correct, you already have the SE compensator as standard equipment (verified by reviewing the 2010 parts catalog).

The SE compensator was credited by many with eliminating the clunk on starting, and some of the actual starting problems, but I don't remember anyone verifying that it eliminated a clunk on shutdown.

I have the shut down clunk, but does not happen all of the time. Stealer pulled the primary cover last month and found no problem, sooooo -----  it must be "normal" as H.D. always says.

Ahhh... Thanks Jerry for the clarity.  Yea... mine doesn't do it everytime, but probably 50% I get a good clunk.

"They all do that"

I wish I could tell my wife that when she bitches at me about something I do wrong.

"We all do that"...  she would knock me out.

I recently installed the SE comp in my 09. I'm currently running a 107 with 10.3 comp, 200 PSI cranking, no comp releases.
Definitely on the edge of having starting issues. The new SE comp helped it crank over more evenly with out the loading and unloading of the old weaker
stock comp. But at shut down there is a new noise. Kinda a growl more than a clunk, but something new for sure.

Have you ever heard of the noisy valve train---brake vibration---abs shake at slow speeds---heated handgrips that do not work---or more importantly, that Harley says that they are "all that way" and refuse to fix these problems under warranty.

I believe there is an issue with the SE comp. Read some of these threads.
