Best Slip-On For The Conv?
« on: November 24, 2010, 09:40:03 PM »

Well, I finally got my new Conv just in time to put her away for the winter. I haven't even heard her run yet, but based on what I have heard, sewing machine comes to mind. My last bike was a CVO Springer and i had upgraded that with V+H Big Radius. While I liked them, I thought that they covered too much of the engine chrome and were just a hair too loud. I think that the big shots staggered would work well for me, but the bike isn't even broken in yet. So, I would like to start out with some slip-ons. What I have heard is that there are 49 and 50 state HD mufflers. I also know that V+H make them, but am not crazy about how the tips look. So, what is the best slip-on  to retain the stock look while adding some noise to the beast?

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving!!

I put on the screaming eagle slip on mufflers.  They are a little louder than stock, but have a much better tone. (my ears don't like loud anymore)  The heat shields went right back on the new pipes so the only difference from stock is a better tone.

the aussie bikes are even worse of than you get , we get tapered super quiet, not even the slash cut, i am very dissapointed today , it is saturday arvo in good old melbourne town, and it is pissing down as we say in australia, means it is bucketing vdown , storms all day, i was booked in for my new se mufflers and sert , but i decided to leave the bike in the garage as i dont want to wash the mud and slush off, so it  will go in monday or tuesday, which means its still bright and shiny

I have put the rush 1.75 slip-ons onto my 2011 cvo softail.  At first I thought they might be a little too loud, but after listening to other bikes, I would imagine a lot of people would think just the opposite.  I only had about 300 miles on the bike when I did the switch, so original pipes came off fairly easily.  I almost always wear earplugs just to keep the wind buffeting noise muffled, so no matter how loud the pipes would be, they wouldn't bother me.  Just don't want to piss others off.  In spring, I will be getting it dyno tuned.  Bike seemed to run fine with just a hint of popping on large decels.

Well, it is very much personal preference, but here's my slip-on story for what it's worth.

When I got the bike, I told the dealer that I would not be replacing the stock mufflers...I liked loud cars and bikes when I was 18, but that was 47 years ago and my tastes have mellowed with age.  Having said that, after 2 weeks with the stock pipes, I had to agree that they DO sound like a sewing machine!  Strangers would come over, look at the bike, say something like, "nice bike man, what does it sound like?"  I'd start the engine and they would look at me funny and then walk away!!  It just didn't sound like a Harley - Honda was more like it.

So began the search.

I really didn't want loud, I can wear ear plugs but my neighbors generally do not.

The parts folks at the H-D dealership finally understood.  Parts Manager, Tim, said, "You want Screaming Eagle, 49 state legal, pipes."  "We have a customer's bike in Service Dept with those pipes, bring yours around to service and we'll compare."  Great!  Like picking out stereo speakers - listen to one set, then listen to the second set.  "What's on my bike now" I asked, "aren't they Screaming Eagle pipes?"  "Yes" said Tim, "Screaming Eagle 50 STATE LEGAL PIPES.  Can you hear what a great difference one state makes!"

Perfect (for me) sounds like a Harley (the potato - potato thing) yet not so loud as to be obnoxious, even to the South Park kids.

Went and got a TTS Tuner and ran the whole thing over to the local tuning Wizard, whom you know from these pages.  He plugged a map into that sucker that makes it twice as quick and it runs 25 degrees cooler with the loss of only one MPG, give or take a pint.

Here is what they look like…

Good luck!

yes, pn 80495-07 and yes, reused heat shield.

As they are 49 state legal, you might guess which one state I can never visit.  Don't you live there??  Can you buy these there or will Arnold come and impound your bike?? :)

Took a 1 1/8" hole saw and a long arbor and drilled out the plugs in the stockers.  Gives them some sound but is not horribly loud.  Takes about 5 minutes and it's free.  By the way- this is what they do to the cop bikes.  Ever wonder why Police Harleys are slightly louder than stock bikes?

Probably not the best option for my CVO Harley.

Did you have to use a Race Tuner for the new exhaust? I was told no by my local dealer if just changing out the mufflers.

I've heard dealers suggesting that the O2 sensors can handle the change to the new exhaust system.  Do the tune.

From my experience, the tune completely changed the nature of this bike.  It went from sort of fast to extremly fast and even better for here in the South, the oil temp dropped over 25 degrees.  I never, even on the hottest days in stop and go traffic see more than 250 degrees on the oil temp.  It was exactly like getting a new, stronger, better bike!

the tuner is a big expense, the service manager said yes get it , the dealer conferred with him, and the consensus was , if you want it done right , and you want it to run right get them both... great note as well, it is only on about 400kms all up , and the service manager as bumped the idle till first service , to be done at 1600km, where it will be adjusted and retuned again, hopefully before and after pics will be on today

So, it looks kile the 49 state SE mufflers are the way to go with a race tuner. But, the bike only has 41 miles on it and has been put away for the winter. Do I have to put some miles on it first and break it in before doing the race tuner??Or, should I have my HD dealer do it over the winter while in storage?

there is no reason to put miles on it first, i am just a little quirky about my vehicles, whether they be cars or bikes, i always buy stock standard, then i add on later and i can see the difference, with my first harley , bought it dead stock, ran it for about a month , then put tapered turbo screamin eagle air cleaner and jets, super loud , and i am still loving it , havnt sold it and has 100,000 km on it.
the bikes when they come to australia , have a few different things to the american bikes, such as different mirror stems, who knows why, amber lens not smoked and they are not running lights they are only indicators, and the mufflers do not look like the pictures on the web or in the catologue, they are large tapered , similar i think to the californian ones,
so imho go and do it now , get ther pleasure of firing it up over winter, and think of me in australia second day of summer pouring rain for the next few days , but after that endless days of riding,
i have taken the photos and i am now looking for the cord to plug the camera in so i can put the photos up,
plus i cant wait to take it out and blast the pipes,
getting back to your original query though, the service manager at my dealership bought a brand new heritage the day i got my bike, and put exactly the same set up on straight away

I got my racer tuner p/n 32109-08B at http://shop.zanottimotor.com/ for $358.74 The retail price from your local H-D shop will cost you $459.95

I did have to pay shipping but no sales tax for the on-line order. I saved over a hundred bucks. Tax would have been double the shipping total.

When the SE Pipes come in, I'll install them and take the bike in for the Dyno Tune.

Just to clarify...

The stock "muffler heat shields" will not fit the 49 state legal mufflers because the cans are a little shorter. The head pipe shields were reused.

You can purchase the muffler heat shields from HD that will fit the 49 state but they are very pricey.

We are running stock cans on our ConV. You simply drill out the three stainless rivets and remove the stock baffle. You find a baffle that will fit that is to your noise level and sound liking and slide them back in and use stainless rivets to re-secure. Don't use aluminum or they will vibrate and break.

We have prototype Fullsac baffles. They are essentially the 1.75 Touring baffle machined to fit the ConV muffler can. There is no need to call Fullsac because Steve will not make another set. The Touring 1.75 baffle will sound as loud as the 2.0 due to the length change and the shorter head pipe length.

I do know of one other person that simply purchased their baffles and took them to a muffler shop for fitting. He said it wasn't that hard to do but it takes time to do it right. The cost of the baffle is a little over 100 bucks and the refit labor will vary but is about half that.

What do they sound like?  All I can say is they are on there to stay until the government forces us all to change them back. Stock look, no tinny sound, good deep rumble, not too loud when cruising but when you wake up that 110 she sings a different note that can be heard for a few miles on a lonely country road.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Hi All,

I'm just about to pickup my 2011 CVO softail, but I'm going to install the V&H TWIN SLASH V16835  system.  after hearing the difference on YouTube I'm sold,  and only AU $480 price tag it all sounds good to me.

My 2 bobs worth as we say Down Under.

Hi dcigar,

After MANY phone calls and "Sorry None Available" replys I finally managed to secure one from Sy's Harley Davidson in Sydney Well they swaped one of there allocations with a WA Dealer. I might even be able to pick it up before xmas.  :orange: woo hoo.  From what i have discovered from the MANY phone calls there are 2 allocated CVO softails not yet sold but arrive in feb/march next year.   What Computer is that ? I'm looking at the SE pro, a little more expensive then the basic one but has heaps more options.

gday rob
yeah i went with the se pro, i know nothing of these things, i just go with the recomendation of chris at harley city in brunswick so went with that and the se pipes, the perfect sound, heard it on his heritage and it barks when you twist the throttle, while satisfyiong the epa,
i got the red one , which are you getting, one of my fellow oz hoggers is getting the maple and gold, due feb,
apparently only 19 in total allocated to australia , only 7 reds , so i was very lucky to get the color i wanted , got the first to arrive in the country,
at the oz hog xmas party yesterday was the centre of attention m ahead of the street glide , until one of our members drove in in his new ferrari california,
but mate you are gonna love it , it is just getting better everyday as the engine loosens up, regards

gentlemen...

Just spreading the word so you guys will do your homework before forking out cash.

The SEPro is said not to work with the 2011 Softails due to the HDLAN system. Here in the States, HD has stopped selling the SEPro for the SEStreet version that will only flash Street Legal Calibrations to a bike and you must pay the dealership to flash your bike with the SEStreet. I've also heard the SEStreet will not work on the 2011 Softails.

Do your homework before modifying your ConV, make sure you can upgrade to at last the Stage II flash at the minumum. Even the TTS will not be ready for the HDLAN 2011 Softails until sometime in March of 2011.

If you guys find this information to be false...  please chime in. From what I also heard is, there is only one calibration available and it is directly from HD and is VIN specific. It is a Stage I flash that must be provided to the dealer directly through HD.

Here is what I did :
exchanged to the 49 " state screamin  eagle (without catalyst). Opened the up as well. Plus installing new ear cleaner as in Europe we have only the standard one. No re-map so far . Still area to work on is the engine temperature. I have oil dip stick termometer which shows 120 Deg C. which is to much for air cooled engine. I read above one comment with TTS tuning which says still  like 250 F after TTS (which I think is still to much). Like my wifes FatBob has 90 Degrees C. I will try out Nightrider as next mod.

Hi Mr Wizard,

Thanks for the Info,  I passed it on to the dealer who is selling me the bike,  If they sell me something that won't work i guess there will be a big issue to deal with.  I'm picking it up on Saturday so i'll report back on how the SE pro tuning goes.

Our ConV has a TTS tune and the hottest I've seen it was 250*, normal temps are 220-225*.

It really depends on the build, ambient temp and how you ride. Tweaks can be put in place to reduce the operation oil temp.

Hi Mr Wizard,

Got the low down on the SE pro tuner from Sy's Harley Davidson in Sydney when i picked up my 2011 CVO Softail Conv,  Yes at the beginning of CVO builds the SE Pro was unable to tune the motor, but the latest Computer firmware addressed that and they now work very well.  Sy's have done a few CVO's now. These guy's know what there doing, They have a Screaming Eagle Drag racing team.  http://sysharleydavidson.com.au/Default.asp?page=181

Anyway my CVO now screams  :coolblue:

That's great news. Glad to hear the SEPro got all the bugs worked out.

I've heard the same thing. A local dealer has tuned the 2011 Conv. with the new SE pro race tuner with good success.

Thanks, good news. I knew when the 2011 softails came out you could not tune them with the SEPro or anything else.

Hi All,

Finally got a digital print of my before and after Dyno output.  All we did was replace the stock SE Slip-on's with the Vance & Hinds Slip-on's and Tuned with the SE tuner.  I'm very pleased with the results.  The Harley Technician didn't push the configuration as I've only put 500 Km on the bike.  After 1500 Km  he said he will make a more aggressive setup.  Even so I'm very happy with a 16HP increase and the Torque increase.   Oh and the sound is unreal, sounds like a race engine.

Are you guys also seeing an improvement in light throttle response and mid range performance?

Hi Kevinski,

Yes a big improvement on my Harley,  at times to much when in low gear,  it tends to want to take off to quickly,  I'm putting that down to the high torque.  Not complaining though :-)
