Had Primary off, Please help identify this part (2009 FLHX)
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:26:14 PM »

Had the outer primary off my wife's 09 FLHX (along with the compensator, chain, tensioner and clutch assy) to install a SE compensator.  I did not have the inner primary off (ground the case to get the rotor off).  Was pouring the MTL back in the primary and found this laying in the bottom of the drain pan.

It is about the diameter of a penney with a lip (shoulder) on one side and a 5/16" or 3/8" hole.  It had to fall in the oil when I was removing the clutch, etc..

Thanks in advance for your help/guidance.

Perhaps the clutch release bearing.

Thanks Jerrry but her's is a cable clutch.  I took the snapring out of the clutch hub, then pulled the short threaded rod out with the adjuster nut and a 1 1/4"  threaded washer with 2 tabs to remove the clutch hub nut.   Manual said nothing about anything falling out when removing the clutch hub assy..

Keep ideas coming please.

I had just realized you said FLHX not FLHXSE.  Sorry for the bum info.  Here's an exploded view for a cable clutch if you need it.

Now that I think about it - I think it spaces out the primary chain tensioner.  If you would like...I could go out and look in the parts book.  Let me know...

Would it go behind the front end of the tensioner (front bolt) Between tensioner and inner primary?  Don't see a tensioner spacer shown in parts or service manuals.  If you think that is it, please verify if you can.  Thanks.

Jerry

Jerry-I removed the #19 snapring, then removed items 15, 5, 2 as one piece in order to gain access to remove the 1 3/16" nut.

7  is a push rod bearing and it takes 2 of a #8 thrushbearing but I think they are over at the tranny side.

I just looked at the parts manual, and the tensioner assembly is not shown??  I don't think I've ever looked int he parts manual and not found the part I was looking for...maybe an oversight in the manual.

But I'm pretty sure that's where it is from.  It's a hardened bushing, right?

Maybe Jerry has an exploded view of the tensioner assembly.

Goes behind the Chain tensioner. It is a spacer. I had one fall off one on me once. About made me pull my hair out trying to figure out where it came from.

I'm sure that Ghost_Rider and yourself hit it on the head.  Only found the one and I'll take the primary cover back off tomorrow night and remove the tensioner assy and see how it looks.  Looks more like a hardened spacer than anything clutch actuation related.

Will let you all know tomorrow night.  Many thanks to all who looked/responded.

No Problem. Like I said, when I found it the first time I was panicing because I couldn't remember taking it off. The taper goes out if I remember correctly. It will only go one way. Just look at the one that is still in place. Hopefully you didn't bend the tensioner when you put it back without the spacer.
Oh and the 2011's do not have these on the tensioners.

Are the parts manuals getting a little thin in the pictures now?
I've always depended on them for that errant part that shows up.

Like the HD manuals or not, they are way superior to what I use to work with in the automotive field (Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth).

Duane-you are quite right.  A lot of times the parts book break down helps a DA like me thru the process where the service manual is not clear enough.  In this case, there is no mention of a spacer in either.

I think they hit the nail on the head Bob, i didn't realise those spacers existed either until one fell off during reassembly.

Got it back tonight.  The front spacer was the one that fell out (there are two as stated).  Should have been smart enough to look further when the tensioner pulled in the front and was on the outer edge of the shoe.  I never saw the spacer that stuck to the inner primary period.

Happy this was not a flat rate job.  Definitely one of the school of hard knocks deal.  As Ghost__rider stated, happy the tensioner was not bent.

Boat:

Got in on this thread a bit late......but they're definitely spacers for the primary tensioner:

Got involved in this when trying out one of the first (POS) SOHOT late model tensioners.

Have heard the latest #39929-06B tensioner is working very well!
