changed ring and pinion to comp 10/84 now what FIXED
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:05:00 PM »

did the ring gear and pinion gear with the comp 10/84 no the bike won't start I hear the pinion kicking out but not engaging it was at the end of the .125 adjustment. Do you think I should add shims to the back of the jack shaft bolt or do you think it is the bendix ???

this is on an 04 se ultra

One could make assumptions as to what the fu** you mean by ring and pinion given your additional comments.   However,  The typical definition of a (ring and pinion) is isolated to being about the rear-end gears in a car/truck.

You just might get some more concrete advise if you got away from the term "ring/pinion" and specified exactly what you were wanting. :-\

It is fairly obvious what he is talking about. In fact he could have just said he did a "10/84" and most people on this site would know what he is referring to.

The typical definition of a ring and pinion as it refers to vehicles common to this forum, HD motorcycles, is a starter pinion gear and a clutch basket ring gear.

Oh - and the jack shaft he is referring too has nothing to do with a minibike.

What was the reason you changed the ring and pinion for in the first place?

the problem was the pinion was not shimmed out enough. added an extra shim behind the jack shaft and all is fine now

thanks all for looking

I seem to recall having to add more washers then what came with the kit.

I think you will like that kit. Mine starts quite a bit easier.

For me I had a ring gear with 3 missing teeth, so I needed to do something anyway.
But the 10/24 kit makes a nice solid starter engagement.

starts nice and smooth now now I highly recommend the 10/84 compfire kit. very easy installation. just make sure you shim to the lower end of their specs closer to the .075 and not the max .125
