CVO -- "Custom Vehicle Operations"

And so, I have yet to see any H-D on the road that is not "custom" in some form or another.

Does "custom color paint" make it a CVO? I have "Denim Black" -- which is a custom color name for "flat-black primer."

SE 2 into 1 Nightstick and SE Stage I intake, K&N

7" LED headlight.

Digital oil stick.

Custom grips.

Windsplitter 10" windshield. 4" and 7" inch dark tinted windshield

Tri-Pocket Windshield/fairing storage

Willie G hwy. pegs on custom mounts.

Passenger Grab Rails

Street Glide pattern adj. backrest.

SG pattern passenger backrest on medium sissy bar.

4 pt. accessory mount.

Luggage rack

H-D Road Zeppelin seat

H-D knurled billet seat screw fastener

Tank Bra

Skull & Bones chrome license plate frame

Tri bar rear fender lighting.

I think ABS and Cruise Control are options, not standard equipment.

And so . . . "CVO" ? Since I have the SE Stage I, is my bike a FLHX or FLHXSE ? I don't think I've ever seen one roll off the sales floor that hadn't added something to the package.

I don't get it.

And yeah, I'm serious about this question. When is a CVO a CVO, and when is someone's ride w/ some "dialing in" a "custom" as compared to a [putative] "CVO" ?

Technically it's a titled designation.  Defined within the VIN.  A bike either very specifically is or is not a CVO model.  There's no in between.  Shades of gray distinctions by those with (putative) interest in whether or not their non-CVO bike is really CVO-esque is.... well...   not a novel approach.

Yeah, and H-D has figured out a way to paint stuff gloss black instead of the more expensive chrome plating, claiming "black is the new chrome" -- and charge the same price for it.

So, what's H-D going to charge me to get CVO on the title?

I don't get the cowbell reference.

Plus an additional $5 for your own cow bell, about $8 more if you want a really nice one!

Bottom line is .... if it has a CVO vin from the factory it is a CVO  :2vrolijk_21:  If it has a non CVO vin but you have sunk a ton of money on upgrades and aftermarket parts... Its prolly a great looking ride that turns a lot of heads but still not a CVO :nixweiss:  :drink:

Reminds me when I had mt '69 Z28.  A regular Camaro is nice but it was no z28   No matter what, and I've seen it trying to be done, it's still not a cvo. Cheaper to just buy one than trying to make one yourself too.  It's all in the vin.  Not the wrist this time.  :)

When it says CVO on the vin it will hold a higher blue book value than a non cvo no matter how many upgrades you do.

Like anything else the "value" of a CVO comes in the designation and understanding that it was built in the Custom Vehicle Operations facility. This is verfied by the VIN number.

An analogy to this might be a diamond. What makes a diamond valuable? Mankind says it is.  A diamond is rare, it shines, its durable, but so are many other stones. We, as mankind placed a "value" on a diamond. Cubic Zirconia is very popular and serves the same purpose in many ways, but it is not a diamond. What makes an original Shelby Cobra much more valuable than a Cobra kit car? With all of todays technological advances those kit cars are probably better than the original Cobra. But we all know it's not a "Real Cobra". To those who want a real Cobra the kits will NEVER be the same. To those to whom it does not matter a kit car is perfect.

Sure, it can be done, take a factory bike and build it up like a CVO. Paint it the exact same color, bolt on the exact same parts and badges (if you can find them since CVO decorative parts and badges are supposed to be sold only to CVO owners who MUST produce the original part prior to buying the replacement), and if the rider is happy with it then nothing else matters. They have ther own bike the way they want it. But since it did not come from the Custom Vehicle Operations as indicated by the VIN number, it is not a CVO. The flip side is you can take a CVO, change the paint and all the parts, and it will still be a CVO because of the VIN nunber. It may not be as "valuable" or desirable as it's twin in original condition but it's heart and soul is still a CVO.

The thing that frustrates some riders is that when they are through building their own "CVO", it's still NOT a CVO. They have something "Like a CVO", but it's not a CVO. Then they calculate all the money and time they spent and reaize they just should have bought a CVO in the first place.

Don't think I'd ever be considered "rich" and I've been riding since the early 70s.

Sounds more like denial.  All the "wishing" in the world can't make it a CVO if it wasn't born a CVO.  And I don't care how much money you dump into it.....it'll never have the resale value of a CVO.  It is what it is. :2vrolijk_21:

I see how a person could look at it that way. But that's not the point. If a rider is happy with what they ride, than that's ALL that matters. Don't worry about what others ride and question what makes it what it is. Just build your own bike the way you want to and enjoy riding it. Let everything else go.

Ya gotta love them CVO's!

Dont be Hatin' on CVO's. EVERYONE has the same oppurtunity to own one. Some of US see the "Value" in buying one and some don't. We all had the same chance when we walked in the dealership.

I.E. My brother in law bought a regular ultra to "save" money from the CVO price tag. Before he left the dealer, with the 103, stage 4 upgrade, and all extras(grips, floorboards), he has as much ( in 1 year of upgrading) in the "standard ultra that I have in my SEUC, and still dosen't have a CVO.

The decision is ours when we walk in, to buy the best the MOCO has to offer, or settle for a standard ultra with upgrades.

Try comparing a Corvette to a ZR1, No comparison...

Thanks for letting me get MY point across...

Trapperdog,

2010 FLHX can get his key gold plated, but his bike still won't be a CVO, and that is what is eating him up!P

Hey there 2010 FLHX, Welcome to the forum! But a word of advice...........it is a CVO forum.  You don't have to own a CVO to hang out here, but don't come on here as a brand new member putting down CVO's or their owners. Some of your posts since you've joined indicate you may have an attitude or a grudge because we chose to purchase a CVO and you chose not to.  If you chose not to purchase a CVO, that's cool too!  We respect your choice, so please respect ours. Just because we were able to buy a CVO doesn't make us RUB's, since you've used that term in a few of your posts.  I've been riding since the early 60's, and I've just recently bought a CVO. Two other Harley's before that, but several other small metric bikes before that because I was raising kids and putting them through college, because I wasn't able to go to college myself and I wanted to make sure they did.  Just because I'm a CVO owner, doesn't make me a RUB. I have humble (poor) beginnings on a small farm, we struggled to get by in the 50's & 60's.  Since then I have always tried to work hard and treat others the way I would want to be treated, and God has blessed me, for which I am very thankful.

Ride Safe!

I'll second that.  I'm a regular working stiff who just happens to be working in the midddle of Nowhere, Afghanistan. Good pay, allowed me to buy my CVO, but the drawback is the crappy living conditions, bad neighborhood, and the inability to even ride until next fall.  Took the opportunity, though....CVO.

CVO -- "Custom Vehicle Operations"

And so, I have yet to see any H-D on the road that is not "custom" in some form or another...

...And so . . . "CVO" ? Since I have the SE Stage I, is my bike a FLHX or FLHXSE ? I don't think I've ever seen one roll off the sales floor that hadn't added something to the package.

You can dress a Duck up in a Tuxedo and call him a Penguin, but if he quacks, he's a f'ing Duck.

Back in 2007 or 08 a friend of mine sat on the porch just a little too long and when he finally decided to go for a CVO Ultra he couldn't find one anywhere.

Not wanting to feel defeated, he purchased a "custom colour", "limited edition" Jake & Elwood Blue Ultra.  He then proceeded to turn it into a CVO.

Believe me, I tried to tell him to watch that he doesn't go crazy because getting his money out would prove to be very difficult... He of course didn't listen to my very sound advise and continued with his build project.

He did it up top to bottom including chroming everything, a 110 engine, power locks, heated seat etc. making it with every accessory he would have enjoyed with a real CVO.  By the time he was finished he had close to $60k into this bike when the CVO Ultra that year was going for $41k CND.

He was quite proud of his bike and there's no doubt it is a real beauty, but not a CVO.  And yes, it has won many 1st Place finishes in various Show & Shine competitions, but with everything said & done it is still an Ultra that has been customized and NOT a CVO!

At this point the only thing left for me to suggest to him was a personalized license plate, which this time he did follow up on my suggestion and now has a plate the reads...  "MYCVO".

This of course is the perfect way to describe my friend's bike.

I find it funny when people without money think having money is bad (RUB) , does that mean that if you are ugly it's bad to be good looking?

If one is inclined to think that way about Harley Forums, then perhaps one should migrate over to the another forum; say the Gold Wing Riders Forum.    :zHole:

Anybody else notice the OP started this silly-azz thread early this morning, gotten everyone all worked up, and hasn't even posted back?

My two cents... in buying a CVO you get:

1. A CVO VIN, which helps a lot with resale value;
2. The 110" engine - in granite paint on my bike - that is not available except on a CVO bike;
2. Fancy CVO paint colors and schemes - for which you cannot even buy the CVO paint from the MoCo in most cases. You can have it matched - with varying degrees of success - but you can't go in and order a gallon can of it from the MoCo. Am I wrong here?
3. A bunch of fancy P&A items already installed - some of which are VIN-protected CVO-only items that you cannot buy from the MoCo unless you provide a CVO VIN;
4. A Gold Key, which really isn't good for anything other than having it;
5. A fancy microfiber towel with the Bar and Shield logo on it;
6. A fancy CVO bike cover.

   --- and ---

7. BRAGGING RIGHTS and the endless admiration of others!

As has been said... a Harley is either a CVO, or it isn't... PERIOD.

Don't bother...the bar and shield logo on the cloth will scratch your paint.  Makes a nice shop rag though.   ;)

What I'm finding in "Harley Forums" is a lot of self-absorbed jerks, exclusionary, fixated, dysfunctional, and no sense of humor.

Well let us get to know you then, something you have not yet done.

One of the reasons a lot of us can toss names at each other is that over time we have all gotten to know each other personally, beyond the glow of a monitor and clacking of a key board. We've met in person, riddens thousands of miles, seen and done fun and interesting things and shared in that bond of brotherhood incorporate to us all. We've met each others families and friends. We embrace or similarities and respect our differences. We've shared in our sucesses, lamented at our losses and grown close together. We have ridden coast to coast to to meet members in person. Before you paint us all with a broad brush, please make an honest effort. Tell us what part of the world you are in, where you like to ride and what you like to do. Let us get to know you as well as we know everyone else here, lest your postings become tiresome. Once we get to know you, your postings will have meaning. Until then they are seen as rants and trolling.

Hopefully your next post will show us you are an honest and sincere forum member making efforts to let us get to know you. If you are otherwise your time here may grow short.

I visit a lot of forums on web to correspond and learn from others with my same interest. But I've never been a member of one that successfully manages its content like this one.  Kudos to all you admins out there!  :2vrolijk_21:

Too late for your well intended, nice words, Mark...he got himself banned this afternoon.

I was in the "He's a troll" camp all along. One thing I have found is that an awful troll will quickly go into hiding by extending a warm offer to him. It's worked in the past on other forums. They wish to talk/bash about anything but themselves and that is usually the first clue. Once others see he won't talk about himself his actions become all the more clear. An honest and sincere person is willing to share about themselves because they have nothing to hide. Not so with a troll.

Glad he's gone.

Not to sound arrogant, but if you want a CVO, BUCK UP and buy one!  That's what we all did.

As a matter of Fact, I was at Brian's H-D in Langhorne, PA on Saturday. Right on the showroom floor was a '12 Street Glide that was the exact replica of the one on the MoCo's 2012 catalog cover....price was $42,000!  WTF! For that price, you could buy a CVO and pay for a trip to Sturgis...1st class! And to beat all, this $42k bike only had a 103".  As they say, there's a sucker born every minute.

OUCH, that hurts. But then again maybe not. When one has several CVOs it's hard to decide which one to ride and log miles on. If I remember correctly, Andys favorite bike is his old 2000 Ultra.

I think that's lost it's favored position.  I believe the top two are his 09 SERG and his 09 SEUC.

Andy says when you have five or six bikes to rotate the up side is that you keep the miles down on all of them.  The down side is when you go to buy tires.....you have to buy ten or twelve at a time. :nervous:

I'm pretty sure it stands for "Rich Urban Biker"

I for damn sure ain't rich...but I own a CVO.  I'm sure someone could come up with some clever initials for me though...

What I don't get is just because some of us bust our a$$ to get what we have and provide for our families we are automatically "RUBs" or what ever the hell they want to call it. This is my first CVO and only my third bike, fourth if you count my wife's that got mothballed when our son was born. My first bike was an "I made it home alive" gift to myself in 2004. Shut your hole and ride. I loved and miss my "highly customized" FatBoy that I traded in for my '10 CVO SE and I plan on building a rigid soon, but the CVO ain't going anywhere. I just don't get it.   :nixweiss:

I had a good friend that finally traded his 2007 ultra for a 2011 ultra limited.  He said the difference was incredible, new frame, wider rear tire, 103.....on & on.   Once you move up a notch, it's hard to settle because great is what you know to be true.   I am on my 2nd CVO now, and not that other bikes aren't nice, just don't think I could ever settle?

Bottom line is .... if it has a CVO vin from the factory it is a CVO  :2vrolijk_21:  If it has a non CVO vin but you have sunk a ton of money on upgrades and aftermarket parts... Its prolly a great looking ride that turns a lot of heads but still not a CVO :nixweiss:  :drink:
And if you sunk a ton of money into upgrades you are unlikely to get near what you put into it, whereas a CVO will retain much more of its value.

:nixweiss:

Ok I will bite and jack this one.

I'm just happy to be part of a group that has the same level of pride that I have, that shows we have worked hard for what we have and not afraid to let others know it, even a week after the troll that started this thread was thrown out.

Congrats to all of us !

CVO -- "Custom Vehicle Operations"

And so, I have yet to see any H-D on the road that is not "custom" in some form or another.

Does "custom color paint" make it a CVO? I have "Denim Black" -- which is a custom color name for "flat-black primer."  Actually, it's not a primer.  It's paint with a flat clear coat over it.

SE 2 into 1 Nightstick and SE Stage I intake, K&N CVO starts wth the 110ci.

7" LED headlight.

Digital oil stick.

Custom grips.

Windsplitter 10" windshield. 4" and 7" inch dark tinted windshield

Tri-Pocket Windshield/fairing storage

Willie G hwy. pegs on custom mounts.

Passenger Grab Rails

Street Glide pattern adj. backrest.

SG pattern passenger backrest on medium sissy bar.

4 pt. accessory mount.

Luggage rack

H-D Road Zeppelin seat

H-D knurled billet seat screw fastener

Tank Bra

Skull & Bones chrome license plate frame

Tri bar rear fender lighting.

I think ABS and Cruise Control are options, not standard equipment.  Standard on CVO

And so . . . "CVO" ? Since I have the SE Stage I, is my bike a FLHX or FLHXSE ? I don't think I've ever seen one roll off the sales floor that hadn't added something to the package.  FLHXSE is a model that only the CVO division of Harley-Davidson produced.  What does it say on your sales slip or what does your VIN indicate you have?

Sounds like you've added some good goodies to personalize your bike. That's what it's all about.  Have fun riding it.

Sounds like a headline for a story where a rubber used a biker for something (not sure what); kinda like "Man Bites Dog."

Just remember that a CVO in all of it's glory won't take a RPG round or roll over C4 either.   ;D     :rifle:       :rifle:
