Proposed 103" upgrade
« on: July 31, 2006, 09:35:45 PM »

I have spent the last 8 months in here trying to gain enough knowledge to make a sound decision on an engine upgrade for my 06SEFB.  I have e-mailed many to the point of literally no return, anyway I called Zippers and got the name of a local builder they recommended. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with them and explained I wanted low to mid range torque and plenty of power without spending over 4k. This is what his recommendation was: Zippers heads which are a part of an exchange program, Andrews TW60 Cams-gear driven, a fueling pump, and a dyno tune when the work is done of course. The estimate is 2960.00 complete. And he estimates 112-115 power and 116-119 torque. It sounds to good to be true, I had the same result estimate from the dealer on a 113 build. Anyway- I'm really looking for opinions good or bad before I set the appointment. There were also a few incidentals "push rods etc."

Sounds like a good combo. What is the targeted compression ratio? Are the pistons being changed?

If I were doing this the 60g is a good cam provided your staying 10 to 10.5 to 1.

Recommend:

Forged pistons
Honing the cylinders (ball hone) make sure they are not out of round :)
new rings
roller rockers
SE / or Jims Lifters or Fueling if you go with their oil pump
Compression Releases
New Gaskets all the way around
Fueling Oil Pump
Those numbers are about close depending on your exhaust.

Jim, That was one part of it I didnt quite understand, he said the compression will stay about 9.3

No, no piston change. Is that a mistake?

Yes. Purchase a set of 5 over screamin eagle forged 10.5 to 1 pistons. PN 22484.04 He is wrong about the compression of your motor it will be lower than 9.3 to1. Also with this build you should not need compression releases.

That is a bit low for the 60G cam, You do not have to change pistons but you will either need to go with a pop-up type or deck the heads to bump the compression up to the 10-1 range. You should also have compression releases installed for ratios above 10-1.

Jim, I called him again this morning, and he told me the compression would go up about .2 . I asked about the pistons and he told me it was not necessary. The only thing in question right now is they are going to look at the crank bearing.

An increase in the compression of .2 will only yeild about a 9.1 comp ration. These motors are about 8.9-1 stock. I would ask that it be bumped more to take advantage of the cam choice, or look into a cam that does not need as high of compression. As far as the crank bearing if it is ok you can add the GP Designs support brace into the primary. It is about $400 which is much cheaper that pulling the motor and having the Timkin conversion done.

tuned,

Andrews recommends 10.2 - 10.5 compression with their TW60 cam.

I run a 95 inch motor with 10.5 to1 pistons and the heads decked 85 thou. I can tell you you don't need compression releases. They have been installed and I have never had to use them. Also you will need to raise the compression. Just decking the heads won't do it.

I gotta' agree with everyone here. I would definitely look into the Pistons as necessary also. I did the Piston/Head match for that bike in 2003. The HDCC/CNC PORTED heads and pistons along with S&S .625 Gear drvien cams, Roller Rockers, (comp release of course), Dynoed, and true duals got me aprox; 117 HP and 119 Torque. Bike jumps off the ground going into 2nd by about 1-1/2"!!!!!
I like that Jims 121 they have in the back of the 2006 SE accessoriy catalog...
