Gear Noise
« on: August 06, 2006, 11:22:14 PM »

Anybody out there got a new '07 with the six-speed gearbox that has a "noisy" 5th-gear..??
Sounds like gear noise and not a bearing....

700 mi on the bike, E-glide standard...

When are you getting the noise, cruising, downhill compression?

It's my understanding that all the 07's with the new transmission have a very noisy 5th gear and that the MoCo has acknowledged it and has a "fix" in the making.  You may want to check with your dealer on any recent service bulletins.

Happening all of the time...under power, reverse power (coasting downhill), at any temp....assuming it has syn3 in it from the factory....

I think only the CVO bikes come w/Syn 3, which most of us remove anyway, but your E-Glide Standard would come with HD's dino fluids.

A friend has his 07 Electra Glide Ultra (non SE) in the shop (400 miles) for that exact noise.  First tech took a ride, said he couldn't hear anything. Took another ride, still couldn't hear it.  Head tech took it out, came back with "it sounds like a bearing", and now the bike is apart.

If I understand correctly, it's the cutting and fit on the 5th gear itself.  It would be very doubtful that every '07 had a the same bearing problem.  I haven't had a chance to see one apart yet, but will post with a pic when I get the chance.

I have ridden several new '07s. I have an '05 and my 4th sounds a lot like the '07 5th. I really don't think it's any more noisy than the '06 and back 4th gears are. I believe that my 4th and the '07 5th are spinning a gear cluster whereas the 5th on mine and the 6th on an '07 are direct drive.

On the '07 trans, only 1st and 5th are straight cut gears, all others are helical.

How does this layout compare to the Screamin Eagle 6th-speed upgrade for 2006 Touring CVO's?

I agree ,I have an 07 Ultra 5th is noisy but not any noiser than my 06 . What fools you is when you go to sixth the rpm's drop and everything gets real smooth and real quiet.I have no concerns over the tranny at this point. The motor pulls good and does not need a tune. So far this is best Harley I have had since 86.

Amazing what the MoCo can do when they no longer have the option of making the customer fix their own driveability issues, usually through the purchase of a highly overpriced SERT or other tuning device.

The friend of mine with the 5th gear noise said it's more of a thumping that started around 150 miles... he has 500 on it now.  He says it's not a simple gear whine.... he can hear and feel it from 2000 to around 2700 rpm.
Dealer pulled it apart, couldn't find anything.  MOCO denies any known problem and won't pay dealership for labor they've done.  MOCO had regional rep try it, and he couldn't hear it.... just said put in heavier tranny oil, and drive it.  Dealer has offered to negate the deal and give the guy his old bike back, or give him the dealer demo after break-in.
I said have dealer put in Redline Shockproof, and ride it like he stole it. :D  Guy doesn't know what to do.

Is the MoCo saying that there is a superior product then Syn3 that should be run in the tranny???? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] :o :-[ ::) Please tell your friend to get that in writing!!! That could/would be something that some of us could use in the future in case they (MoCo) tried to deny a warranty issue for us not using Syn3 in the tranny.

[smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  Good point! Good thinkin'.  I'm surprised, too, especially since you're probably thinking a lot about what to do with all those CVO stickers.  ;D ;)
