incentive to lose weight
« on: July 31, 2012, 09:47:04 PM »

Just entered into a weight loss contract with a friend of mine. Started on the 28th of July and ends on Labor day, Sept. 3, when we will weigh in again. We were both within 1.5 lbs of each other to start and the bet is for $5000. Whoever loses the most lbs. by the 3rd of Sept takes the cash. He is using Weight Watchers diet for men and I'm basically starving myself until then.  $5K is quite the incentive to lose weight. Wish me well.

I know that there are better ways to choose to lose weight and keep it off for the long run but right now my main concern is losing more than my friend in the next 30 days or so.  I'm going to try to do it by cutting out most carbs and sticking to high proteins. I've also started exercising by walking 3 miles a day on a treadmill and will up that to at least 5 miles a day.  I haven't been exercising at all so this has got to help.  My buddy is relying mostly on the weight watchers diet to achieve the goal. After I win the $$$ then I'll convert to a more stable weight loss program like weight watcher's. Main goal right now is to kick his a$$ in dropping lbs.

I hope you win! :orange: :mango: :bananarock: :apple:

Don't starve yourself.  Eat 6-7 SMALL meals and exercise your azz off.  This will help your metabolism speed up.  Starving yourself and not exercising will slow your metabolism.

Good luck!

After that treadmill kicks your a$$, walk another mile.
Do you need any help deciding what to buy for your bike with that money?

Good Luck and work hard.. That Weight Watcher Plan works really well if your dedicated to it.. I know many friends on the Weight Watchers and the pounds just melt off them over night.  It sounds like both of you are really serious, $5,000 can buy a lot of chrome or better yet, a serious down payment for a 2013 model  :P.   Don't take the Watchers Plan for granite,,,   Work your azz off and you should have a chance to win this...   Make sure to report your weekly weight loss...we wanna keep up with you progress  :2vrolijk_21:

No carbs diet works great.. but you can not go 90% or even 99% you need to avoid all carbs.  And yes beer is a carb :huepfenlol2:
Best of luck!

I agree with some of the statements about a sound exercise & nutrition plan.  I find it easier to loose weight when you are exercising, it makes you see how hard you have to work to make up for a few calories.  Good luck to you.

Water Water Water is the key with the all protein no carb diets. You have to keep your system hydrated to process the protein I have used these diets a few times to drop 20-30 lbs. You can expect 15-20 in the first 30 days if your strict with it.

Breads are not all the same.....even the 'healthy' ones can be high in carbs...read the labels......NO sugared pop.....

Try PGX   http://www.pgx.com/ca/en/  I was diagnosed as diabetic a few years ago.....the meds were had side effects....MAJOR gas.....so off the meds I go....and onto PGX.....lost 20# without even trying.....and my blood sugar #s are better than on the Metforman....fibre is your friend!!

You will get a few days of relatively mild gas.....but start with 1 pill before each meal and gradually increase. Good luck!!

At your last 2 weeks take this http://www.renewlife.com/first-cleanse.html

They sell it at Walgreens and CVS, I'm sure many other places. Have a toilet readily available. It is not a full blown colonic, but it will drop a few pounds or more. And it is not as discomforting as a complete cleanse, but make sure you have a toilet readily available!

When we initially weighed in, we recorded what clothes we had on. We are both the same height, 5'10" with medium size frames. I weighed 216.3 and my buddy weighed 217.8 . I haven't had any kind of sugar or bread, rice, potatoes, or beer ( :'( ) for three days now.  Wife and kids had pizza last night and it was a real struggle when I first smelled it.  So far just salads with two tablespoons of oil/vinegar and grilled chicken.  I find myself turning channels on the boob tube when there are food commercials on.  I'll keep everyone updated as things progress. I've lost around 30 pounds since February by eating lean protein (and sometimes whatever I want), fresh fruit and vegetables.  I've been hovering at 200 for the last month, but am getting ready for another push to lose 15 more pounds.  You can use one day a week to treat yourself to one meal a week of whatever you want.  You'll find you can't eat it all after a couple of weeks, but you will be satisfied and not feel so cheated.  Also, it helps when you have friends over or attend an event.  It takes the guilt away.

I wish you good luck on your program and hope you find something that works for you.  Keep in mind, if what you do now is not sustainable; you'll pile the pounds right back on.  For the long run, try to find a plan that you can live with and will be a lifestyle, rather than a diet.  Diets don't work.

When we want a metabolic boost, there is a great recipe floating around out there that is called the "Cabbage Soup Diet".  It is endorsed by the American Heart Association and is one of the most adaptable I've found.  It has a base of low sodium chicken broth and of course the veggies.  You can make every meal different by adding new ingredients each time you prepare it.  I make up a two gallon pot of the cabbage, tomatoes and celery, then add zucchini squash or broccoli or other non starchy veggies for different meals.  You can also add hot sauce or other spices to keep it interesting.  The key is to minimise the starchy foods.  You can have a half a cup of potatoes, brown rice or pasta; but not with every meal.  Just once a day.

http://www.aboutcabbagesoupdiet.com/

This approximates what we've done at home.  We've only gone the complete course of this diet once, but find it very useful when trying to loose a lot in a few days.  Most important, you'll still want to moderate what you eat after this contest; provided you want to keep the weight off.  So, lean protein including; beef, pork, fish, chicken are all good.  Restricting the white foods like rice, potatoes and pastas to a minimal level will assure continued results.  So, you'll not have to deny yourself, because there are some great meals with those ingredients.  Just a little more prep time for the fresh stuff.  The quick frozen veggies are very good too.  We usually only do up to five days on this program, just to get a kick-start.

By the way:  Another way to approach this kind of contest is to go by percentage of body-weight lost. That way, no matter how large or small, it's based on percentages rather than pounds lost.

Good luck and hope this helped!

So let me ask this question.
When the contest is over and you have won will your friend say?
Pay up, you have to be kidding. This was just a joke. I wasn't serious, were you?

Lots of friendships have ended over less than $5,000.00.

Just lost 70 lbs (started Jan 15th), it was horrible but had to "pay the fiddler" after years of excess. Everyone I see now asks me if I feel better now I tell them "no, I am fricken starving all the time"... The first month or so are the hardest then it gets much easier as you go with every week getting easier then the last. The hard part, keeping it off! We will see but it would be absolutely horrible if I was stupid enough to waste the 8 months of torture...
Good luck and just keep thinking about all the cool mods you can do on your bike with your buddies money!!

5'10" and 217 lbs???

You've got to be kidding me.  I assumed you were going to say 300+lbs.  Geez, now I feel really fat...

If you accidentally over eat, do what we used to do when we cut weight for wrestling:  throw it back up.  :orange: :mango: :apple: :cucumber: Let me give you a couple pointers, though.  Do it right after you eat, so it doesn't have time to start tasting like stomach acid.  :'(  Also, drink lots of fluids.  trying to force a softball sized piece of doughy bread or wad of dry meat back through your esophagus past your heart is like giving birth.  :-X  Our favorite indulgence was milkshakes.  They were a breeze to get back up, and tasted just as good the second time.  :-* :-*

For those of you recoiling in disgust, you've obviously never been truly hungry.  Dlaws, do what you need to do.  it's for $5000!

Be strong.  We feel your pain (metaphorically)! :2vrolijk_20: :znotworthy: :znotworthy: :2vrolijk_20: :znotworthy:

Of course I'm kidding.  I thought using lots of emoticons would've made it obvious that I was being silly.  I would never seriously encourage such reckless behavior.  Although it is true that we did those things regularly to get down to our weight for wrestling.  Starvation can make you do crazy, desperate things.  So can $5000!

When the contest is over and you have won will your friend say?
Pay up, you have to be kidding. This was just a joke. I wasn't serious, were you?

Lots of friendships have ended over less than $5,000.00.

This shouldn't be a problem as we have allowed an independent, mutual friend hold onto the prize money. Just hope he doesn't leave town! :P

Two pounds a day?  That ain't healthy.

Not really for a guy that's normal in the beggining. The majority of the weight being lost in the first week or so is water weight.

The same happened to me when I first started. In seven day's I lost almost 20 pounds. After the first week it slowed down to around 2 or 3 a week.

Keep it up!!!

lost another 4lbs. from last wednesday to today. Weighted at doctors office scale wearing the same clothes.  Went by my opponent's office earlier this week. Snuck in a large piece of peanut butter fudge and left it on his desk.  One of his staff members told me that they saw him eating it.  He has asked me several times if I left the fudge on his desk but I've denied it.  He was going throughout his offices asking everyone who left the fudge and acted pissed about it.  I knew he would cave in and eat it but feel sorry about it latter.  I sorta feel bad about doing it but not $5k bad.  All's fair in this wager until the 3rd of Sept.  Can't really say how much weight I lost total since the bet started because I've not had access to the original scale we weighed on to start. Our battle started on the 28th of July.  I'm having trouble keeping my trousers up, size 36 waist.  If anybody has any additional ideas on how to boost my weight lose this last 12 days, I'd appreciate it.  Still planning to do the big colon blow used prior to having a colonoscopy. I've got the the eye of the tiger on this bet!  Thanks for all your support.

Don't just use your legs try to use your whole body. Do pushups, crunches, arm lifts, curls, jump rope (many reps low weight for toning).  Careful using weights at this time as you can put on muscle which weighs more than fat. (After winning try to buildup/strengthen the muscle to have a healthier metabolism.) Try to get your body very warm. Wear sweats and a jacket. (Swimmers exercise a lot but tend to keep on a layer of fat because they never get warm enough to burn it off.) Exercise first then eat, but if you can't then exercise right after eating. (Within 30 minutes) Try to eat the same low calories over 5 meals versus those calories over 3 meals. Drink a glass of water then slowly eat small bites. Talk or text while eating to drag the meal out. Enjoy the meal don't rush it.

After eating rinse your mouth really well with water or brush your teeth and rinse well. Get the food and drink tastes out.

Drink lots of water. Green tea is good for regularity. (The cabbage soup sounded like a good idea.)

Have you tried smoking unfiltered cigarettes like Camels? Rolling your own is cheaper! (Just kidding.)

Quit the water about 4-6 hours before the weigh in.

You left out important facts like, do you have to walk in to be weighed or can you be carried?

Put all your fast food coupons in his mail box. (I liked the fudge, shows you are serious!)

If you are reading this "GET YOUR FAT ASS UP AND DO SOMETHING MOBILE!". Oh yeah, staying positive about yourself is important too.

Don't forget to get a good nights sleep. 8-hours.

Also, thanks for making me feel overweight now, 5'11" 205lbs.

I try to measure inches instead of pounds because people exercising to burn fat usually will gain muscle weight while losing the fat.  If you lose inches and keep some of the weight because of muscle gain then your metabolism will be better and you will maintain a healthier weight longer.

Well, the contest is finally over, and I WON!!!  We weighed in today wearing the same clothes. I started out at 216.3 lbs. and today I weighted 195.5 for a loss of 20.8 lbs. in 37 days!  My buddy didn't fair so well.  It wasn't even close.  I enjoyed that moment when he handed me a check for $5000. He didn't seem as happy as I was.  Went out tonight and celebrated by eating a steak at Applebee's.  Tomorrow I will continue on with my diet.  Thank you all for your vote of confidence and support over the last month.  Now I'm off to surf the pages of this year's H-D catalog!   ;D

Cool Deal!!  :2vrolijk_21: I could stand to lose about 20 or 30 lbs but have no discipline!! What would you suggest to keep from being just miserable!! I'm 56 years old and still pretty much got plenty of get up and go!! I just like good food and BEER!! I've cut out a few things and the wife has me eating some better but weekends just mess things up!! Back to the discipline thing! Congrads again on a great accomplishment!!

I went the high protein low carb route to lose weight. that meant no beer.  :'(  The best advice I have to offer is to stay somewhat hungry.  Also, whatever food you do eat try to eat mostly in the AM.  Small meals every few hours to keep metabolism jump started.  Don't be too hard on yourself and once every 10 days, eat whatever you like, pizza, beer, ice cream, cake, etc.  then jump back on the diet and stay hungry. Don't watch any food channels or restaurant commercials on TV.  Don't let anyone get you down. You would be surprised at how some people will try and temp you to go ahead and eat. Heck, even my wife did me that way some.  I know I had a great incentive to lose weight ( 5000 of them ) but the real payoff is how much better I feel about myself.  If you do screw up and overeat, don't say it's over.  Forgive yourself and stick with it.  I'm motivated now and plan on sticking with it until I get to my target weight of 175 lbs. That's only 20 lbs. from now. My blood pressure is down and my back doesn't hurt like it was with the extra weight on.  Good luck to you on your endeavor and remember you are doing it for YOU!

Congrats Dlaws!!  Way to go!   I can ID with you!  I'm 6'-1/2", and over a 5 yr period I slowly crept up on 220.  Never did hit it, when I hit 219.3, I said "enough is enough".  I was in decent shape, but I hadn't worked out or done any kind of exercise for over a year, due to a torn rotator cuff.  Battling with insurance, they wanted to try exercise/therapy instead of surgery.  It got to the point I wasn't able to sleep, they finally gave in for surgery in Dec '11.  Best thing I ever did!  In a sling for 8 wks (no riding!!), then in Feb '12 I started exercising and watching what I ate.  By July I was down to 189, and now I'm "hung up" at 190.  I turned 60 in July, it's definitely harder to take it off, the older you get.  I'm still targeting 180, I think the last 10 will be slower/harder to get rid of.  And, once you get it off, it just takes discipline to keep it off.  It all came down to portion size for me, because I don't drink beer, and I gave up soda & caffeine 20 yrs ago.  I did have to give up sweet tea (decaf) and ice cream, but we (wife & I) reward ourselves with no fat/low fat soft serve yogurt about once a week.

Hang in there, it is all in your attitude and lifestyle!

Take care,
Joe
