Unless you/family are really big into taking pictures you can get one camera that will suffice for both tasks you stated above. Like you when I first came to the site I didn't have a camera and really hadn't thought about one. Was turned on to a Sony DSC-P200 (which has since been discontinued, check here for some models of the point/shoot now offered - Sony Cybershot Camera's) from members here that I found suited my purposes. It is small enough to fit into a windshield bag, easy enough to use (point and shoot), and easy to get pictures on the computer. Good luck on your search, and getting used to working it.

My little Canon does an outstanding job! Great pics. Consider buying a larger memory card than what comes w/ it and you'll want a case. Also, to the intuitive thing; these little cameras are loaded w/ features, you'll want some I expect but not all. They'll most likely have some sort of "soft keys" that change things depending on something else. When you're not pressured, have one of the techies explain the different features and how to get them w/ the mini buttons. I think you'll want something that does good portraits, has a relatively high speed and crams just lots and lots of pixels into the shots. As seen by JC's Yosemite pics, you'll end up wanting to blow some up and print/frame them.

See, we told you we'd be helpful.

Anyway, I have had a couple of Sony Cyber shot cameras and they are great.

The following is my humble perspective on the subject.

My current camera is a Canon PowerShot A620. I prefer a camera that is small enough to fit in my shirt pocket yet large enough to hold on to and control with one hand. I use a lanyard long enough to remain around my neck while the camera is stowed in my shirt or inside breast pocket of my jacket. Stowing the camera in this manner gives you quick and easy access if you happen to see something interesting.

The camera is going to take a beating in your pocket over time so it is important that the lens and LCD display are protected when the camera is uncased and stowed. This model has an automatic lens cover and an LCD display that rotates inward, out of harms way.

!Quick & Easy_02.jpg: If you are riding in an area like Glacier Park, go ahead and leave the camera out of your pocket, hanging by the lanyard.

!Quick & Easy_04.jpg: You need to zoom in tight enough so the auto focus picks up the machines in the mirror, not the mirror.

!Quick & Easy_05.jpg: If you always keep your camera handy, the next time a little avalanche debris follows you down a chute, you can catch the person behind you filling his shorts.

!ShootStraightUp.jpg: Rotate the LCD display up 90 degrees and take this shot looking forward with the camera in front of you.

!ShootUpHigh.jpg: If you are in an area with a lot of other folks, rotate the LCD display down 90 degrees, hold the camera high over your head and frame the shot above the heads of the others.

!Wallpaper_01.jpg: Shots like this work well in the off season as desktop wallpaper.
