The prison also used different execution methods. The first two executions were carried out using the “traveling” Julien Gallows which were used to hang Tom Horn in Cheyenne in 1903. In 1916, the penitentiary completed the addition of a “death house” which consisted of six cells to house inmates on death row, and a unique indoor version of the Julien Gallows.

The building also housed the gas chamber when it was chosen to replace hanging as Wyoming’s execution method of choice in 1936. Ultimately 14 death sentences were carried out; nine men were hanged, and five were executed in the gas chamber by the use of hydrocyanic acid gas.

After serving the state for eighty years, the prison closed its doors.

Of course, if you are in the area, the Grand Tetons are a must!

Noted for world-renowned trout fishing, the park is one of the few places to catch Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout.

Yellowstone National Park is a nearly 3,500-sq.-mile wilderness recreation area atop a volcanic hot spot.

Discovered in 1870 by the Washburn Expedition, Old Faithful geyser was named for its frequent and somewhat predictable eruptions, which number more than a million since Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in 1872.

On the third floor of the Old Faithful Inn, there’s a snaking stairway leading 76 feet up to what seems to be an indoor treehouse. From the treehouse, a series of catwalks lead outside onto the steep roof of the inn, and stairs go up to a deck on the very top of the roof.  Unfortunately, the Inn was being restored at the time of my visit.   :(
