This all started last winter with the Colorado Snows that never ended, not to remind everyone of that but SEULTRA posted:
I was shoveling my driveway for the umpteenth time this winter (so far) and stepped on a patch of ice and slipped and fell on my tailbone/lower back. 2 Advils and 2 LARGE Black Russians later I'm here to B!tch about the Fu@k@d up weather we've been having here in Colorado! I dorked up my back last month trying to push my car out of a 3 foot drift and was healing nicely when this crap happened today. I've had it!!! Gonna load up the 12 gauge and go blow the hell outta a 6 foot snow bank in front of the house! AAaaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!!! [smiley=angry.gif]
My point here is to ask for opinions on snow blowers. It is evident that I will be buying one soon! We went over to the weekend place yesterday and while there we got about a two inch dusting which continued as we left. I hear it may now be 4 to 6 inches.
At any rate, we will obviously not be doing removal daily and thus need something capable of whacking accumulations of up to 10-20" I imagine. This will be heavier wet snow many times as well.
I was looking at the Honda two stage Track Drive model 30" cut with up to 20" high bite.
Let the suggestions, warnings, encouragements etc. begin:

Sounds to me like you're on the right track with a two stage larger blower. We get pretty good snows here in Iowa and some are pretty wet at times. I have a 28 inch cut Troy Bilt with a 8.5 hp motor. It does a good job for most snows. When it gets 12 inches plus of wet stuff it could use a bit more power. I just take smaller bites when it gets like that. Heated handles and electric start are great too! :coolblue:

Heated grips, that sounds like a great idea, that Honda has electric start for sure.

I have a big Craftsman that I used in the Gorge for many years up to 3-4 ft of snow but when that snow is heavy and wet didn't work that well but colder dryer snow blows real nice. If you can get it about 15 inches or less the work is much faster. Good luck with it Roger. Best machine I ever moved snow with and had fun doing it was with a Bobcat.

Not sure I need that investment level but it would be easy to see why it would be fun

There are probably several good ones, but for me, it would have to say HONDA on it.

I was looking at the Honda two stage Track Drive model 30" cut with up to 20" high bite.
I have the Honda HS928TA
http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/ModelDetail.asp?ModelName=hs928ta
9HP, 28" cut track drive. They advertise this thing will throw snow 50 feet. I was doing my sidewalk, not paying attention, and was putting snow on my neighbors sidewalk across the street, and we have wide streets!
This thing will eat anything I have thrown in front of it, including 3-4' of snowplow packed snow in front of my driveway. We are on a cul-de-sac, so the plowed stuffed is usually 10 feet or more across.
It will also eat stainless steel dog dishes that your BSR didn't pick up before the snow while you were working.
Will also eat your deck if your are not careful, don't ask.
The track drive is cool, but a bear to turn, you have to wrestle it to do a 180. But the track hydro is smooth as silk.
My driveway is concrete, and if I were to buy another one I would get the wheeled version. With the track the skids just hang up to much on the concrete and jerk the unit around a bit.
With tracks you are forcing the scraper - skids into the ground.
Because of the way the track/blower are adjusted, this blower does work good on grass, my dogs need a "clear" area.
Expensive, but it is a Honda.
-
wow, the hydrostatic track drive is a nice touch. Being from Buffalo we know our snow blowers. Most times a simple two cycle power shovel will work but when we get three feet of heavy lake effect snow we need a powerful (8hp or more) two stage. My biggest complaint on snow blowers is when they don't have enough weight in the front and ride up and over the hard pack. This causes me to pick up on the handles more to keep the front down but you lose traction to the drive wheels. I think the track drive would combat that.
BTW, I have a Troy Bilt 10HP with a stand behind cab, drift cutters, heated grips, and a cup holder. It's an absolute tank and has NEVER failed to start on the first pull.
-
I think the track drive would combat that.
Absolutely. The Honda has 3 positions of the the chassis relative to the tracks. Think - the tracks pivot on the center of the chassis.
1st is a travel position, it raises the scraper about 4" off the ground for - travel.
2nd is about an 1.5 -2" off the ground, this is good for grassy areas or if you have a lot of stones. This is what I use for the dog area.
3rd forces the scraper to the ground. If the tracks were up on 2x4's the scraper would be touching the ground.
This position is the one that causes the machine to skate around a bit on concrete. It will also excavate your yard if you get to rammy with it.
Neat thing with these track drives, at least the Honda, you can "drive" it up and down stairs!
And, this thing has so much power that, if you had the traction, you could push a car with it.
The auger has ice cutters on it, so there is not much in the way of packed frozen snow (or decks) it will not cut through.
No drift cutters came with mine, for some reason they can't be sold with the unit in New Jersey.
-
I put the single stage thrower on the front of my Deere and I seem to be the envy of all the neighbors :coolblue: Clears the lake effect in no time that we get here in the syracuse area. :bananarock:
Syracuse's top 10 snowfall seasons, measured by the National Weather Service at Hancock Airport:

93-94 163.8 inches
89-90 162.0 inches
77-78 161.2 inches
70-71 157.2 inches

my buddy lives on the edge of the Tughill Plateau. The got something like 9 feet in a week last Feb. We visited for Pres. day wkend and sat in his hot tub. His two stage is a work horse. Everywhere was a tunnel for a sidewalk and road. I'd have thought Cicero/Syracuse got more of what Oswego and Watertown got last year.

That week last year was quite something. We did get hammered at the same time but the wind blew across Lake Ontario at a more westerly vs. south westerly trek dumping more lake effect up at Tugg Hill. Thought you might enjoy this link if you haven't seen it already. http://goldensnowball.com/ :jack: Sorry!!

funny. I'm sure Syracuse wins it every year. BTW, the threads not jacked as long as you mention a snow blower in it.... :cherry:
(Snow Blower)

Look something like this?
-
Man you Upstate guys have tough with only 3 seasons; July, August and WINTER! :o
Hoist! 8)

You hit the nail on the head... I had the same unit in Northern NY (think Vermont). Never failed & if that snow blower couldn't do the job you'd need a truck with a plow on it. Funny (not ha ha funny) that this should be reprised now... expecting snow tomorrow with a HIGH of 32F. I have the Avalanche this year so I'm thumping my chest & yelling "bring it on!!!"
BTW, I have a Troy Bilt 10HP with a stand behind cab, drift cutters, heated grips, and a cup holder. It's an absolute tank and has NEVER failed to start on the first pull.

This is the bad boy of snow blowers, we tried the honda and then tried this one, hands down this one smoked the honda!!
Check out the link and see all the models and features, we have the second largest one, I don't remember the model number off hand!!
It has the ice teeth, steering controls on the handles, control direction of the snow all by hand controls not by cranking, and electric start!!
Everyone thinks that the track snow blowers are good, but they are not so good in slippery conditions, the wheels do better, plus they maneuver much better and faster!!
We don't get great big snow storms in Illinois, but last year we had a pretty good snow fall, about 12+ inches and it was like going through melted butter!! Even in heavy wet snows, it still throws it no problem!!
I like it, it does well!! :2vrolijk_21:
The one pictured is the big one, thats awesome!! :2vrolijk_21:

Just the topic of snow is unpleasant. Yesterday rode 80 miles to meet Notah and Scooter and Hobo for lunch. Then took a long way home for a couple hundred more. 75 degress, light sweatshirt all day. Great day to be out all day and in to the evening. Saw snow flurries tonight on the way home from dinner. Humbug.

I have been looking also and the Honda is on the top of my list also. What price are you receiving??

Very expensive. I paid 2100 3 years ago

Cerdo
The Honda online site has them for a little discount at most retailers, $100.00. I haven't talked price with a dealer at this point.
I imagine after the holiday weekend I'll narrow it down and check pricing.
Cerdo, have you negotiated a price?
-
Well I ordered the Honda.
$2600.00 and 0% for 12 mo. no pymts.
The dealer let slip it costs him 1% if I do the 0% so when I go to pick it up I'm going to see if I can get the extra $250.00 off. Why pay the bank?
Anyway, I should have it for this weekend. :bananarock: :bananarock: :coolblue:

120-Volt Electric Start with Recoil Backup
Is that a typo with an extra 0 or do you actually have to string an extension cord out in the yard to start this thing everytime it stalls or bogs?
-

Must be but that's just pasted off the Honda Power Equipment site.
Go Big or Go Home I guess :huepfenlol2:
-
It's a 120v. it's not an error. Most large snow blowers have electric starters that you plug an extension cord into. it's easier to pull start them than mess with a cold stiff extension cord with gloves on. I have a 10HP that starts just fine. I've never used the started. if I were more feable things might be different.

Hey. I may be feable minded but I think I can figure out a pull cord :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2: :bananarock:

Interesting. Had actually expected that to be a typo. If it starts easily enough to pull one would think they could hang some 12v high torque mini starter on it to make the unit fully self contained.

That might be a temperature issue in extreme climates, only thing I could think of to have the 120V set up.
-
The problem is the battery. It may sit for a month at a time in the very cold. They're almost always in a garage near a power source anyhow. Most of us in the snowy areas have learned to get up early when a good deal of snow is in the forecast to have enough time to blow the snow to get to work and get the kids off to school on time. We actually had a day here a couple years ago when we received 2 feet of snow during the night and school wasn't closed. It stopped early enough (5AM) for the town to get the roads cleared in time for the school buses. The driveways were another matter entirely!
-

Hadn't considered that. Small batteries and very cold very thick oil. Could very well need something with the endurance to keep it running through quite a few cycles to get it loosened up and fired the first time.

Good grief. Two feet is more than I might have to shovel in an entire winter some years. I would not be a happy camper. I don't want a pickle.....

Seems to me, if you hadn't bought the banana you coulda bought a 90 HP John Deere with an enclosed cab, heater and a snow blower powered off the PTO. I'll quote a good friend of mine..."Go big or Go home". ;D

Then I would have room for the Deer :huepfenlol2:

That's a nice set up as long as the JD has a front PTO. The neck would get awful sore turned around the whole time... :stars: :stars: Great idea though, It'll blow the cars, children, pets, mail boxes, neighbors........ anything that might be in the way!

I thought I was a sick puppy. Roger..you're like an alcoholic except it's vehicles. There's places for treatment for people like
youus. Stay VERY far away from them. VERY far away.

I've also got this sickness with John Deere mowers. For what my mower costs.....HEY...did you know they come out with a utility tractor with a can and A/C? I wonder of I could get the Hawg Wired system mounted in there? Corbin seat? Heated steering wheel? Chrome starter?

I didn't even mention the Tioga was converted to four wheel drive.
-
I’ve got a Toro CCR 2450 5 HP….. bought it on the recommendation of a friend who uses the same model in his landscaping/snow removal business.
We paid $1000.00 for it about four years ago, it runs great and will throw just about anything about 40 feet.
Best thing is it has both a pull and electric start… only have to go electric at the beginning of the season!
-
Hadn't considered that. Small batteries and very cold very thick oil. Could very well need something with the endurance to keep it running through quite a few cycles to get it loosened up and fired the first time.
I'll bet the Honda blower's ACR's don't work intermittantly and fry wiring... ;) Sounds like a nice blower, Rog.
Can I come live in your RV? ;)
I've owned Honda walk behind mowers for years...never more than two pulls, and never any problems.
You guys can keep all that 2 feet of snow at night chit up there. In B'ham, if it snows 20 inches, you ain't going nowhere, no matter how clear your driveway is...the whole city is closed. We got 20+ inches in March, '93...couldn't get anywhere for 4 days, and power was off at my house for 7 days. First couple of nights it was in single digits. That only happens every 100 years or so, thank goodness.

I tried to tell you, but what can you do, right!!
The one that I posted on here for you earlier has all the same features and only costs $1,120.00, thats less than half of the Honda!!
You won't like those tracks, cause it's hard to move around when it's not running and they have no traction on slippery conditions!! The tires grab better when it is slippery!!
The Husqvarna 1330osbe-xp has a 13-hp OHV Tecumseh motor, elec. & pull start also!!
Well, It's JMO, the Hondas are good, but it's the name that you pay for mostly!!
I have used both and hands down the Husqvarna is much better!! JMO :nixweiss:
Later,
MIKE :vrolijk_10:

Well, right or wrong it's here and I doubt the moving it around will be an issue in my case as it has its own little spot in the garage.
I'm sure you pay for a name, but since I sell on that principal I guess I buy on it as well.
I will have a good test as well since there is apparently a foot or more at the house now, accumulating in the last week.
-
Looks like it may be more by the time I get there, winter is here in the mountains. :2vrolijk_21:
-
Winter is here, snow level is suppose to get down to 200ft by Saturday. Have fun with the new toy. I hope I do not need to use mine this year since we moved away from the snow in the Gorge. Have to get friends to check on the house up there.
-

That was something I'd wondered about Rog. What is your plan for the weekends when you get there and can't get in to the snow blower?
-
I solved this problem as I aged. Started young in Alaska with lots of snow. :coolblue: Then moved to Washington state some snow a little older. :nixweiss: Now upper middle age in Calif no snow but, in a 1 hour drive I can be in snow. :mango:
-
That was something I'd wondered about Rog. What is your plan for the weekends when you get there and can't get in to the snow blower?
Not sure it would be bad enough to not be able to get in, but whe I got the Friday night the neighbor had been over with his Kubota and plowed, however, do not fear the Honda got a work out on Sunday morning........check this out
-
.
-
Never really missed a beat, I fouled a plug though and had to pull it after 4 or five hours, may have had the choke out a tiny bit, not sure, ran great after I cleaned the plug though.
-
I fouled a plug though and had to pull it after 4 or five hours,
Four of five hours? Roger, if you're spending that much time moving snow on a weekend that's supposed to a weekend off you didn't get a large enough piece of equipment.
-

That was a several times out and I was having fun learning how to best clear the drive.
My biggest issue was I wanted to cut it donw and the work crews had compacted it over the week. mostly I was just dicking around with it.
The three cuts that would accomodate moving cars and getting in and out would only take 20 minutes tops.
From Friday evening to Sunday Morning we had about 20 inches is all. :2vrolijk_21:

Talk about your good timing there Roger. Glad you got to go out and have fun with the new blower. We had bought a little one - not even in the same ball park as yours - when we lived in Northern VA. The couple of times we used it, it paid for itself, but it has never been pulled out of the shed since we moved to Central VA. It is fun learning how to use the tools that blow. We had lots of practice this weekend and last week with our leaf blower.

Funny you should mention the leaf blower.
I brought mine home form over the mountain yesterday, much more chance to use it here over the next four or five months than over in the snow.
Did I mention I had an audience?

maybe they were hoping to see the infamous Roger Jobs slip and have a snow blower accident
-
Roger
It looks like you are leaving a lot on the driveway, are you using the "ground scrape" position?
-
maybe they were hoping to see the infamous Roger Jobs slip and have a snow blower accident
Most likely the case, I did have a cousin in the cooler in the back of the truck, having just picked up my venison from the butcher.
-
Roger
It looks like you are leaving a lot on the driveway, are you using the "ground scrape" position?
There were a couple of subs that got there before the contractor and they drove on the earlier snow and packed it hard about two to three inches.
I do need to drop it one more position though.
Late on Sunday the neighbor came by again with his Kubota and he'd attached his blower, he took it to grade with that. Problem is it continued to snow and the subs are back this week. It may solve itself for the time being though, Freezing level is up to 6000 feet and will remain high for at least a few days. Subs are supposed to be done this week and then I can get on top of it and keep it cleared properly.
-
I do need to drop it one more position though.
3 positions, "travel", what I call "light" (allows the blower to work on grass and stones) and "Clear". This last one forces the front of the blower into the ground, it will actually raise the leading edge of the tracks a bit. Depending on where you have your scraper bar, this position will almost leave clean blacktop showing. It will thin it out enough to let the sun takeover.
There are industrial grades shoes available for the auger housing, most likely your supplier did not offer these to you.
http://www.jackssmallengines.com/honda_snow_ss.cfm
I have been buying parts for years from the above website.
And if your dealer didn't give extra shear pins, I would order some spares, before you break them.
You could break one pin and barely notice the blower is not quite working right. It will still move mountains of snow with half an auger turning.

My contractor broke a pin this AM. I already have some additional to the original supply coming.
I'll check into the shoes and I really appreciate the info :2vrolijk_21:

Sounds like you are doing alot to that new honda just to do the job!! I have had the Husqvarna for two seasons, this being the third, I have done nothing to it but put gas in it!! It already came with ice teeth on it and scrapes all the way down nicely!!
Not tring to be sarcastic, but I tried the Honda and it didn't scrape very well nor did it like wet snow either!!
If it is doing what you wanted, thats great, but it does look like you definitly need something bigger!! :nixweiss:

I think it's the nut behind the wheel right now. I'll know if it was a good purchase in a few more weeks and snow storms.
The snow today was totally saturated as it has rained all day and it threw it without a problem today. Also, once the driveway is truly a one family driveway I think I won't have a problem with the scraping. In areas this weekend that had not had the truck traffic it scraped to nearly the pavement on the first pass and it is currently at the mid level setting.
-
but I tried the Honda and it didn't scrape very well nor did it like wet snow either!!
Roger has a 32" cut, that is pretty big as far as residential snow blowers go. Mine is the 28" version and that is big enough for me. I only sheared the pins that came with the blower, never the replacements. I don't think running into a stainless steel dog dish helped though (the dog dish lost)
The auger is an ice cutter, just chugs away a snow plow snow too, and wet snow was never a problem. Wet snow can choke any snow blower if you try an move too much at a time.
If you tried a Honda and it didn't go far enough maybe the scraper needed to be adjusted,
You are not going to convince Roger the the Honda is bad. You wouldn't be able to convince me either.
Yes it is expensive but you get what you pay for. I am pleased with mine.
Only change I might do if I had to do it again (not likely, though) is to go to a wheeled version. My driveway is concrete and not smooth at all. This causes the unit to "grab" as I use it, because the auger housing is being pushed in to the ground.
Someone made I comment about the tracks not working on ice. Tires don't work on ice either, unless you have chains.
One of the neatest features is speed control. Because of the hydrostatic drive speed if infinitely variable from zero to top speed. Makes it very easy to match the speed to conditions.
The worse feature though is making a u-turn.

These pic's sure remind me of years ago in Spokane. Down here in central Calif area we have only had 0.39 inch of rain since June. Talk about dry. I had to run the sprinklers again yesterday.

7 + inches on Tuesday in Bremerton and over 12" in two days, all of that coming on the heels of 8" of snow the two days before that along with a temperature rise to a tropical 60 degrees. Can you say FLOODING. I 5 is under 8 feet of water in Centralia and closed Tuesday afternoon through tomorrow and into Friday they are saying now.
Sure be nice to be able to direct the weather gods to where they are needed. So Cal, Atlanta et al. :-\

I located a surplus blower, maybe I could clear the driveway with this and start a side business :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

I'm sure it would make fast work of your driveway, but I sure hope you don't get enough snow up there to warrant the side business.

I doubt that I would get into the snow removal business, but many others are. Snow removal is a good side job for folks. Many weekend homes and the owners aren't there to stay on top of the job.

Seems like there's been a lot of snow in the north east lately too.

Welcome to Canada.
We got another 5 inches of snow Sunday, and another 10 is forecast for tonight/tomorrow. Even though I have the big John Deere 2 stage snow thrower this is the first winter I have contracted snow removal. I guess it is a combination of my schedule and age/physical condition - but I seem to have neither the time nor energy to keep up with the snow this winter. My options were $30 to the guy with the snowplow and shovel or the Howie snowmelting option. I concluded I can hand over $30 per snowfall till I die and not spend as much as the Howie snowmelting system - at least in my climate anyway.

Yeah, I hear ya. I have contracted out my snow removal duties for the last 10 years. I hate it to the point I don't even want to touch the white chit. I look at it as only about 8 more garbage days till the first ride.(That sounds better than 8 weeks)
-
My neighbor is a builder and there's another neighbor down the road that hates the stuff to the point he bought a $52,000.00 CAT thrower and gave the builder access to it for whatever he wants if he keeps the guys driveway cleared.
I'm on the route, so when mine gets deep he swings in before the weekend and clears it.
Sure makes it easier to hit once a day or so with the Honda. Although the way it has been he's had to do it twice a week or it gets over 2 feet, so when I get there I can take care of the daily foot if it comes.
Man can that guy drink though :drink: :drink:

We had a high of 72 today here, but it's supposed to get cooler towards the end of the week. Spring will not be as long as it has been getting here. :2vrolijk_21: Good thing we've had some nice rain showers recently to wash all the chemicals off the roads.

I remember getting 20 inches of snow in 10 hours about 6 or 7 years ago when we lived in DC. Of course, my husband was out of town, and we sure did not own a snow blower, I had to go out every hour on the hour to shovel off the step and patio at the back door. Thank goodness I did. My dogs sure did not like going to the bathroom when the stepped off the deck and their eyes stuck out of the snow drift like a crocodile. But they did what they had to do. My neighbor never shoveled, or even opened her back door for three days. When she finally tried to get out, she was in a world of hurt, trapped in her house something like that pic Iski posted of the beer fridge, right outside of door. The snow didn't stop at 20 inches, but it sure made a mark on my memory.

Fortunately, our 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd and our 5 year old Akita think all this snow is just the ticket. It is hard to get them inside. We have about an acre fenced in that we turn them loose in. They sure are sleeping good at night. The Akita could stand to loose a few pounds. Leaping thru the drifts trying to keep up with the puppy energy of the Shepherd is just what she needs...

I feel sorry for you guys up north. We have had some great weather here in Oklahoma. We have had a few cool days, but we have kinda been in a pattern where we have the cool days during the week and then it warms up for the weekend - 60's & 70's. The weekend pattern kinda gets screwed up this week - 60's today & tomorrow and then the forcast shows a cool down for Friday - Sunday :(
I have been able to get out and ride for the past few Sunday afternoons, but have spent the past four Saturdays running a chainsaw trying to clean up the trees that were taken down from the huge ice storm we had back in the middle of December. Pretty big job and it may take another 4 or 5 Saturdays, as we have about 8 acres of yard (fortunately the balance is pasture land and wooded areas that we can't see from the house). I have to get all the trees taken care of before the really nice riding weather gets here in a few weeks...anyone want any free fire wood or 10-20ft long cedar logs?
Anyway, I'm sure glad I don't have to run the V-Twin chainsaw all day. My 18" Poulan saw is enough to wear me out.

We were supposed to have rain today, I though we had dodged the bullet. And I got called in for OT and had to ignore the call so I won't have to drive 40 miles in this crap.

Feel sorry for you yanks.
We had just a little ice yesterday morning -- melted off before noon. It's still pretty cold today - only mid 40's today, but should be back up in upper 60's Sunday - Monday....we several friends that already have a ride planned for Sunday afternoon.
Oklahoma weather is always a rollercoaster ride.

WooHoo!!! Snow day here!!! Only 3" overnight (very icy streets) and the city can't handle it!!! Buses stuck everywhere! Cars sliding sideways!!! WooHoo!!! People are funny in this chit! You'd think it never snowed here before! :o

Sure is Nige, when it's applied properly. The best technology in the world is useless, when applied and executed incorrectly. This is currently evident in the top-of-the line HD motorcycles in '07 and '08, in their premier CVO lineup!!! :o ::) :D ;)

That's awesome stuff there, Howie. Very impressive. We're gettin' a pretty good lot of snow up here.........for me it's a pretty good lot anyway. I've seen more, but never on this side of either pond. Driving in it isn't as bad as I thought. The roads are constantly being plowed. The real adventure will be driving to work this evening after it cools down and this slush turns to ice. Sure is pretty, but.........I think I've had my fill.
-
It won't turn to ice Henry. The trucks are spreading salt as they plow. Works great but causes rust on our cars and pits in our concrete garage floors and driveways. Shouldn't you be sleeping?
-
I'm having a very rough day, and must go get a beer, crank the ouside stereo up, and go sit in the hot tub and get snowed on. Life sucks, huh?! :nixweiss: :P ;D :2vrolijk_21:

Had ANOTHER 6 inches of snow Monday night. It is 15* right now. More snow forecast for Thursday and Friday. We are within a few inches of the all time record for snowfall for the winter. The mountain of snow plowed off my driveway blocks the gate to the motorcycle garage located behind my house. The mountain is now over 7 ' tall. At this rate, I should be able to get my bike out of the garage by fall of next year - more or less... :( >:(

This all started last winter with the Colorado Snows that never ended, not to remind everyone of that but SEULTRA posted:
My point here is to ask for opinions on snow blowers. It is evident that I will be buying one soon! We went over to the weekend place yesterday and while there we got about a two inch dusting which continued as we left. I hear it may now be 4 to 6 inches.
At any rate, we will obviously not be doing removal daily and thus need something capable of whacking accumulations of up to 10-20" I imagine. This will be heavier wet snow many times as well.
I was looking at the Honda two stage Track Drive model 30" cut with up to 20" high bite.
Let the suggestions, warnings, encouragements etc. begin:
I don't know what you are moaning about, it looks gorgeous out there. You want to live over here in the rain and damp

No damp for me, I get enough of that on the west side of the mountains when I am at home in Seattle, in fact I bleieve we have nearly the identical winters here as you do there. That's a good reason to practice what we learn in the Friday Beer Thread :drink: :2vrolijk_21:

Might want to bring the ski adaptors if you're shipping the bike. Actually, I shouldn't be whining. We have gotten off very lucky the last 6 or 7 years in regards to snow. We have typically been able to ride in March. This is probably the first year in a while where that isn't possible. We are experiencing a "normal" winter in Ontario. August is a beautiful hot month . Lots of nice places to ride!!!

I'm looking forward to it already.
My initial plan is to ride from Milwaukee to the Menominee area, up to St. Ignace, then to Sudbury and finally down to Toronto and Niagara.
By looking at the map the route looks to be a beauty, lots of lakeside riding and some wilder stuff over the top of Huron and down into Toronto.

I'm flying my bike there. Land in Calgary on the 30th July. Then doing a big horseshoe all the way down the Rockies on through Arizona & Texas, across to New Orleans then up to the 105th and finally over the top of the Great lakes to Toronto. Leave Toronto on the 6th September.

Sounds like a great ride. I'll try to put together some things that you may want to see while visiting Ontario at that time of year.

Question:
Is "Climate Change" modern day scientific gobbledygook for the saying: 'If you don't like the weather around here, just wait a little while and it will change?'
Hear that saying almost everywhere & almost everyone thinks the weather changes the most where they live & can relate some stat to 'prove' it.

More than likely they went to the neighbors for a nice dinner, had too many beaver cocktails and ended up spending the night, during which time it snowed the 500 year snow and now they have to get back to their cabin down the road.
So they decided to back home when they got up in the morning, they figure it will only take about three days to get there.
I am sure it some ethnic logic (country origin to remain nameless) that got them here, so I am sure it will get them home.

Can't get away from this chit. Thought I was done with it when I headed home earlier. Dammit. AlabyGodBAMA! This started as flurries late yesterday evening. By 4am, it hadn't done much more. Yeah, I've had enough of this crap. Only 2" fell last night. We are 7" away from having the most snow in 42 years for one season. Oh, by the way we are supposed to get at least 6" this afternoon. Still say I've gotta hook up my trailer & get the h....l out of here. :( :'(

Henry, what's that brown stuff under the snow? Is that grass? I had to ask because I forgot what it looks like.
We got about a foot in the last day or so. Drove 120 miles round trip to get my daughter from college on mostly country roads with lots of hills yesterday afternoon. Saw a lot of cars in the ditch. What are they thinking driving like that?
I'm going out to snowblow right now. It'll likely take an hour or two.........

Let's see: You are in NY. I was just a tick north of you for the past few weeks. I saw, and dealt with the snow. Now, I'm back in my beloved home....in Alabama. Understand snow is rare down here. Yep, it's grass.

You know, while visiting the Constitution State, I asked myself the same question. Seems prevalent, no matter where one travels, to find cars in a ditch during periods of inclement weather.........heck, it doesn't have to snow. Down here, cars in a ditch are a pretty common sight on Saturday morning. ;D
I'm going out to snowblow right now. It'll likely take an hour or two.........
Have a great time. I'm gonna figure out how to get my motorcycle off a broken jack.

Okay guys. Now I've really had it. We got 18" of snow between Saturday noon & Sunday morning. This latest snowfall enabled my area to claim a "new" record for most amount of snow in a single season. Yeah, that makes me feel better. Literally had 6' of snow in my entire driveway because of wind direction.
-
heck, it doesn't have to snow. Down here, cars in a ditch are a pretty common sight on Saturday morning. ;D
We were on the road early Sunday morning and outside of a little local watering hole, we could not believe the number of vehicles that were left in the parking lot. Shook our heads in admiration that the wise folks cabbed, or walked home leaving their vehicles in place. Smart folks. Two hours later - 15 - 20 cars were all gone.
Figure it helps Keep them outta the ditches.

The neighbour's kid got stuck pulling into his driveway Saturday nite. It probably took him close to 2 hours to dig himself out so he could park in the garage. Not 20 minutes later he pulled back out & got stuck on the road. Where in the heck would this monkee have to drive to in a blizzard?

was out and about quite a lot on Friday evening and all day saturday. I used my Wife's Suburu Outback. I wouldn't have been able to get out of my driveway with mine. It was a tank. 4 More snow days! Hopefully I'll be getting my bike back from storage in 3!

Sorry Man! I am starting to feel guilty about the great weather we are having here in Oklahoma (ok, not really). I rode the bike to the office yesterday - it was 72 degrees when I left at 4:pm. Didn't ride today (had to wear the coat & tie for a meeting this afternoon)....supposed to be up near 80 degrees today.
Hang in there Spring will eventually return to the Frozen North.

Typical day on my street.

Looks like Christmas every day at your house Muff !

Beats working, not as good as riding.....
Yesterday a consultant hosted a round of golf at the new Chambers Bay Golf cours, home of the 2010 US Amateur and 2015 US Open.
Weather was slight overcast and 50ish. A great links style venue.
Beats shovelling snow too :2vrolijk_21:

Was depressing just looking at the picture. Can't imagine that as a daily vista for months on end.

Roger - that pic looks surreal.
Guess that's why it's called the Great Frozen White North, Muff. On the other hand, if you lived in Kansas, you could be looking at corn......

Still better than Here. I have about another 3 -4 weeks before I can attempt to get away, then hooking up the trailer/bike & heading down 1-75 till its warm. Ordering some stuff from Jenni in Cinci & using that as excuse to escape.Pick the stuff up along the way.

Sounds like a good plan. The brochures usually show Florida with a sun or a beach or or at Disney - happy smiling people enjoying a frosty or cold beverage or some damn thing. Not so bad to live here - there is the occasional person eaten by an alligator & all but usually it's not anybody you know so WGAF.
Living in a frozen wasteland is not anything I envy, to be sure.

I've probably been in Florida 40 times & I never tire of it. Except Instead of Daytona this October I'm trying Myrtle. Been to Daytona 5 years running & time to check other venues.

Myrtle is smaller & spread out. People are friendly & it's a different atmosphere, except lots of the vendors are the same as DB. Check out Suck,Bang, Blow. We will be in MB in May for the Spring Rally.

It was 4 last week, this week its 5? That only makes sense if you're Canadian. The only thing about the long winter is my ability to keep on adding chrome when the bike is sitting dorment. The bike gained 20lbs, I gain 30. Go figure. :(

Hey guys. No snow on the weekend. Saw a pile of bikes out on the weekend, all crotch rockets. We're getting close.
-
Had some snow today, but none really stuck. Headed home around 3 pm and glad to see the streets clear, well mostly clear.
Now that the snow is gone I have another issue with the streets.................

Yikes. Wouldn't want to whack those on a bike. Or a car. Weather here is the chits. 2" last night. Another 2 to 4" to-nite.

Actually they do have the "rule" book. No hunting on the 6,000 acres. No so stupid on their part :2vrolijk_21:
They weren't too jumpy. I imagine had we been on the bike the exhaust would have hurried them along. Always fun to see them. But it wouldn't be good to not see them coming around a corner on a bike or in a car.

It's funny how animals know these things. Makes you wonder if they can read the "No Hunting" signs. :confused5:
You got that right. One of the reasons I don't ride often at night is because of the big four-legged critters that can jump out at you or be just around a blind curve. :nervous:

Night around here isn't the issue as much as dusk, the hours just before and after sunset is when these beasts are moving the most.
-
They're protected in PA. The herd is nearly tame. I've been there several times. One time I saw a bull elk walked into a guys driveway while he was working on his pickup. It layed down about 20 feet away and he just kept working. Even the dog ignored it. There are a few permits issued each year by a lottery.

OK, uncle.........................
Five months ago on the 19th of November I started this thread never suspecting that I would be posting a pic of snow from April 19th.
We should have been golfing Saturday but instead we were watching the snow.
it was 70 degrees here a week ago but it snowed Saturday morning. :nixweiss: Global warming?
-
I'm finally on the opposite end of the spectrum. We broke an all time high Saturday by 7 degrees when it hit 87. I passed an SE Nanner coming toward me on Saturday morning. I get all excited when I see another Screamin' Eagle. I don't see them that often. Good luck with the weather, keep the faith!
-
Last week it was 78* one day, snowed the next afternoon, and was back in the 60's the next day! Spring is the wackiest season in Colorado!
-
Not looking forward to the 2008-2009 of this thread, so far no major events though.
Most likely around Thanksgiving time we'll begin to see the white stuff again.

Here we go again. 6" of the crap last night. THE MUFFMAN
-
Over the last month we've had some flurries here in northern Colorado, but for the most part it's been really nice. It hit 70 here yesterday. Took the bike out for a spin, first time I've been back on it since I messed up my knee.
-
Wishful thinking. changed the fluids, coat of polish, on the jack & covered. THE MUFFMAN
-
Had a couple dustings so far. Bike is at the dealer in hibernation and the 0905 110" engine upgrade. Next stop FLA, April '09. Let it snow! :pepper:
-
We've had about a 1/2 inch so far and it's not going to snow again, ever. :coolblue: Snowblower is ready however..... :-[
-
Woke up to a dusting covering the ground this a.m.
SNOW SUX!!!
-
The organizers of a local street fair brought in a truckload of "snow" for the Friday night festivities. Heard it was a big hit. Only snow we will see on the ground this year, unless they truck in some more ice pellets (snow). Only hit 55 degrees yesterday, but it was sunny.

Oh My! :o Just watched the weather showing 2ft of snow in Buffalo, NY :'(
Forecast shows 75 degrees here Wednesday. Susposed to cool down here by the weekend - only in the low 50's
-
That forecast was for 40 miles south of Buffalo (Ellicottville, NY). Buffalo didn't get any today. I just came in from going out with some friends for MNF and there was an inch on my car. My brother got about a foot today but the area from the forecast got 2 feet (and schools were still open).
Lake effect snow is an amazing thing. I could see a solid wall of clouds to the south dumping snow from Lake Erie and a solid wall of clouds to the north dumping snow from Lake Ontario today while the sun was shining where I was. A change in wind direction and it would have been an inch/hour for me. It stops when the lakes get cold but we deal with it very well in November and December.
-
I guess Al Gore needs another Nobel Prize! There's nothing like a few feet of snow the first part of November to make you realize, stupid is as stupid does.
I think I need a Nobel Prize for discovering that "seasons change". Isn't THAT profound.
-
But the snows are receding on Mt. Kilimanjaro and the indigenous people depend on the continuous runoff to thrive. (you been watching Today Show this week?). How do they explain the thawing of the ice age 20,000 years ago? Mastadon Flatulance? Now THAT'S a carbon footprint!

Mastodon flatulence is the reason to NEVER EVER light a smoke while circling a mastodon. ;)

With no OSHA work safety rules posted on the side of their caves, more than a few cavemen learned that lesson the hard way. ;D
It will be 21-25 degrees tonight in and around our NoFL abode. In preparation for this, I disconnected the garden hoses. Winter sucks.
-
Yesh, this cold front has driven me to apply the winter turf fertilizer to my lawn...And go buy some adult beverages suited for sipping by the bonfire.
It is nice to only mow once every two weeks now versus every 4-5 days during the "wet"...
-
I can't believe it! I mean we get some nice weather here in the winter, but it going to be 81 here today! :confused5:
-
Will not need to mow until March or so. That is one advantage to our harsh panhandle winters. I will mow up a few leaves & rake some pine straw sometime in Feb. maybe, depending on my mood.
With the stock market doing what it is doing, I have decided to invest all extra money in booze, ceegars,, and motocickles and maybe trips to some damn place where I can invest in sunscreen & beach attire. I am planning to retire while still working but so far that plan is not working out.....
-

Jim,
I have actually experienced "Lake Effect" snow here in Oklahoma.
It was few years ago while fishing a bass tournament on Lake Texoma (Oklahoma/Texas boarder lake) the first week of March. We had a couple of weeks of very nice spring like weather and then the morning of the tournament a cold front came in and the temp that morning was about 20 degrees. The sun had just came up and we were waiting for take off. The sky was perfectly clear, but there were snow flakes the size of quarters falling from the sky.... pretty weird. No real accumulation -- just a light dusting on the deck of the boat and it stopped after about 15 minutes.
Sure glad we don't get the real stuff y'all get up there
-
Cuwazy man! 47 this am going to work...might hit 75 during the heat of the day..pussed out of riding...
Suppose to get colder just after we leave! 45-50's the rest of the week.
I work from home now, but use to ride to work as long as it was over 40 in the morning. I don't have a faring or windshield, so I get the full affect! Wide awake by the time I got to work 35 minutes later. Walked like John Wayne for about five minutes after getting off the bike.
-
Now here's a good one, my wife's aunt called us here in Colorado, from Florida to make sure we bring coats because it colder there than here. But I hear it going to warm up there and get colder here.

all the way up to 30 here

Sorry guys.... 72 degrees here right not. Should make it up to 75 later. If it makes y'all feel better, I'm not out on the bike - have to work :(

Looks like I'll need to wrap up warm for the Clay Shooting at the weekend.

We're getting colder each week, freezing or lower most nights now..........

May ride tonight if time permits. Temps in the 60's during the day, 40's at night. Considering a ride to a car show this weekend - we have friends visiting & not sure I will have a spare bike - yet.
Have a good Clay Shoot Nige & hope the Clays don't shoot back. ;)

I'm really having a hard time letting go :-\ The bike has sat for two weeks already :( so I took her to work today, got all bundled up and took off 31° 15 to 20 mph wind from the N- NW off the big pond. at first I was wondering wtf I was doing but now I feel sooooo much better :coolblue: I know this is just down the road :o

I hear that ;D I'm Glad we live on the West side of the Great Lake Snow machine... Last year Christmas Day it was 50° took the scoot out after the family left ;D Couldn't do that with 200" of the Lake snow clogging the streets. On certain sunny day's when the wind is blowing just right off the lake, you can see the cloud formation over the lake when I'm driving into work. You darn well know what's going on in the North West side of Indiana and South West side of Michigan (Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow) no thank you :'(
-
25 degrees here this morning with a light dusting of snow. Next thing you know they will be putting salt on the roads. Guess I might as well put the bike up for the winter. :coolblue:
-
Folks..............it is SNOWING in North Alabama right now. No accumulation yet, but the CVO Boxers just came in from their morning romp with snow all over their backs. This is strange.............usually don't get much of this, and when we do, it's like late January/early February.

Then it drops into the mid to low 60's through the weekend. North Florida winters are rough severe brutal a test of stamina actually pretty much ok for year round riding. Makes me glad to live away from the frozen wastelands & all. Nowhere near as good as central or south FL though. The heated seat & grips have been used in sub freezing weather at home. It does not stay cold very long usually.

Yea, if I ever build a house I'm going with the radiant heat, house, garage, don't know about the drive. Many of the snows are big, don't know if it could keep up?
Nice warm garage floor, each room with it's own temp control, that would be great. Stayed at a resort in Santa Fe that had it, great in the morning when you get out of bed and the floor is warm.
Howie, how long have you had yours? Were you on fuel oil before that? I was wondering about a cost comparison. We have natural gas here, I remember how much it use to cost us when we had fuel oil in NJ, with an old converted coal furnace!! $$$$ :-\

Howie, how long have you had yours? Were you on fuel oil before that? I was wondering about a cost comparison. We have natural gas here, I remember how much it use to cost us when we had fuel oil in NJ, with an old converted coal furnace!! $$$$ :-\
Craig, I can design a system to melt ANY amount of snow, at ANY temp and wind velocity. These are the factors to consider when sizing a system. But the higher the requirements, the more boiler HP you have to throw at it. I was on gas before and now. Best I can tell, it runs me about 50 bucks per storm on my property. That's about 2000 sq ft. I designed for 0 degF outside temp, 2" of snow/hour in 50 mph winds. I maintain my slab at 45 deg F during melting. Pretty severe design. But I didn't want to see it on my property. Most residential systems are designed to accumulate snow and melt it over time. This keeps the equipment size down. But I designed it for critical duty, no accumulation, and instantaneous meltage. I have the "CVO Snow Melting System"!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

I remodeled the entire house and property 5 years ago. The new HVAC system, including the boilers and snowmelting system, was part of the renovation. So was all new masonry outside. ;)

But did you do the radiant under floor heat in the house?
C'mon, now! The most efficient and most comfortable heating system available- RADIANT? Of course man! My entire house is heated by radiant. In the floors in some rooms, and on the walls in others. My detached garage floor is radiant heated too! 400,000 BTUH's to radiant heat whatever the hell I want to, inluding an unlimited amount of instantaneous domestic HW from it too! ;)

So just on the house do you see any heat savings. Did you put separate thermostats in major rooms? I was looking into tankless hot water too.

So just on the house do you see any heat savings. Did you put separate thermostats in major rooms? I was looking into tankless hot water too.
I'm sure there are plenty of savings. It's the most efficient system I could design. I don't make more than 120 degF HW for heating, and bump it to 140 degF for Snow Melting and DHW requirements. All the heat is instantaneous. It's a "0 Mass" system, so all the heat goes to it's intended locations. My boilers are 99% efficient condensing boilers because of my low temp capability. Radiant heat is a perfect matchup to condensing boilers for that very reason. A cast iron boiler can't be used in a condensing mode as it will rot out from the condensed flue gases.
Extremely difficult to measure the savings with the fuel costs all over the place the last few years. When I first put it in, my bill didn't change cost wise, but that included many snow melting days as well. The way I see it, I operate that snow melting system for free, compared to the operating cost of my old CI steam boiler with CI radiators!
I have a thermostat in EVERY ROOM. Each room is a zone. I also have 24 loops in 2 zones of Snow Melting with automatic sensors to turn the system automatically when it snows. ;)

One of those "only in the midwest" type of days today. Saw reported temps of 74 degrees this afternoon. Drove to my sister and brother in laws on the other side of town this afternoon so they could use the pickup to get their Christmas tree; which we got while I was wearing a short sleeved t-shirt and my niece was wearing flip flops and some knee length kind of trouser.
Right now, however, I just saw a reported temp of 16 degrees before sliding back to the house. Wind is up again. It's been sleeting heavily for the last hour with freezing rain for the hour before that. I hope Santa falls and busts his ass for bring this winter crap back.
-
That is wild Don, never got above freezing here today.
Lazy day after our Christmas party and a drive home in blowing snow.

We knew the cold front was dropping down. Could watch it from the arctic on down. So it's not as if it was any great surprise. Still.... Any day that goes from the mid 70s with tshirts and flip flops to the middle teens with sleet preceeded by freezing rain surprises the hell out of something whether you know it's coming or not :huepfenlol2: .

The deep freeze hit the Northwest too. Looks like below freezing for the better part of two weeks with on and off snow.
-
We had the "Tale of Two Fronts" yesterday. I got out and rode a little Saturday. Temp was up in the low 60's, but very windy. Then yesterday afternoon I had to do a roof repair after the wind Saturday blew off about four shingles. I carried the ladder up to the house, got the tools and shingles ready around 1:30 - the temp was 74 degrees. Then I had to go in to celebrate my granddaughter's 5th birthday. Came back out at 3:00 to get up on the roof and the wind had switched to the north and the temp was down to 34 degrees. I didn't stay on the roof very long.
It is now 17 degrees here..... burrr. I ain't liking this!

13 below... I can't figure out why anyone lives up north during the winter :nixweiss:
24 degrees here. Had a little ice this morning... just enough to really mess up traffic. Okies don't do well on ice and snow. Forecast shows back up to 50 degrees on Thursday, but back down below freezing on Sunday & Monday (I really hate winter!)

Rain here...off and on.

Down right balmy here today, no wind

Had to take a 4x4 to go get the mail. Still snowing, and to think we moved away from this much snow. The other house has over 2-3ft, I guess we'll see it in the spring. If this doesn't stop Terry is going to have to pull out the snow blower.
Here are a few pictures on the way down the driveway to get the mail.

This photo was shot from my garage at 8:00 this morning. We got a quarter inch of ice yesterday and it's been sleeting all day - about three inches of the stuff. The thermometer has been froze on 19 degrees all day :'(
The weatherman says it will clear out tonight and be in the mid 30's tomorrow. Forcast shows low 60's on Saturday :bananarock: :pepper: :jalapeno:
I know, this is nothing compared to what you guys up north have had to deal with, but don't mean I like it any better though

I just watched some film of you Oklahoman's on the ABC national news - trying to drive on layers of ice. Driving on ice isn't something you warmer climate types excel at, is it? hehe... I know it isn't funny, especially when it is in your neighborhood, but I had to chuckle once or twice watching film of cars sliding and spinning down the highway! I guess driving on icy roads is a bit of an acquired skill! :2vrolijk_21:

LRebel,
Crap weather is crap weather, I hate the freezing rain the most.
We have ahd cold out here but no snow until today and just a little on the west side of the pass. I imagine when I get to the mountain house we'll have a good dump. We kind of need it though there, were it belongs.
-
a little south here by Olympia got lite snow flurry, then cold wet stuff mixed.
glad I rode last Friday, although only bike at work because it was a little chilly. Might be another week before it clears out and possible warm up so there is no ice on the roads to ride again.
-
RJ749, recommend you consider the Honda that has driven wheels, not track drive, which is much too difficult to make turns and requires a wide radius.
-
Lots of ice north of here last night and today. It's rained all day and it's pretty damned chilly. Weatherman is calling for snow tonight or early tomorrow.
And I was supposed to be in northern California tonight. Would have been if not for an equipment failure on the first leg of the flight. Oh, well...

Scott,
You're exactly right..... Most Okies don't do well on ice & snow. We usually only have two or three days per year with enough ice &/or snow to be a real problem.
I drive 30 miles each way to my office. Usually a 30 minute drive each way. Last night it took me an hour and a half to get home -- just because of folks that don't have a clue how to drive on ice and snow. When we have this stuff I drive the 4X4 Dodge diesel...... no problems :2vrolijk_21:. Just have to watch out for everyone else -- have to stay out of their way.
-

Since we get a lot of snow where I use the track model it is best for our use. I agree if it were less frequesnt and down to dry pavement a lot it would be best to have the wheels.
I had those conditions this weekend and it takes a lot more wrestling around.
-
Well I was giving you guys a lot of chit last week because it was nice here, 50's to upper 60's. I knew I'd pay for it! Five inches of new snow and it's been below 0 last two nights! Going to warm up to upper 20's today. That'll teach me to keep my big mouth shut! ;D But like they say, if you don't like the weather in Colorado, wait 5 minutes.

The weather services and local news are predicting this to be a very bad winter for the Northwest.
all which got me thinking about this old thread that tracked everyone's trials with snow removal for a couple of winters.
I got tired last year of messing with it so I just picked up the solution, it was delivered Friday afternoon. So it can snow whenever it wants to this year starting now.
Sunday Night and Monday Mostly cloudy. A chance of snow showers. Lows 19 to 25. Highs 27 to 34.

I sure could borrow that machine. Right now we are getting 8 - 10 cms of snow and it will be - 12 deg C tomorrow with more snow for Tuesday and Wednesday (first dump of the year) we were lucky this tear, until now.
I was going to drive down to Phenix on Wednesday, changed my mind flying down and will be their Wednesday PM and flying back to Calgary November 24th.
Good to hear from you.
