Where would you live, and why there?
« on: March 07, 2015, 07:50:28 PM »

Retired.  Single.  Financially stable, but not wealthy.  In the United States.

Would not live within 250 miles of any coast, nor in any metropolitan city with a metro population greater than 1 million.

Excluding the central plains states of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and the Dakotas, and the last two states of Alaska and Hawaii.  Not Florida for obvious reasons.

Tax friendly such as no state income tax, no personal property tax on vehicles.  Gun friendly as in not Kalifornia or Illinois or Massatwochits.

South of the Snow Line.  Except SW Colorado in consideration. Tennessee also.

Crooked roads nearby.

Not more than two hour drive to VA clinic or health center, or military troop clinic/hospital.

So far, the Texas Hill Country meets all these requirements.  From Bandera to Lampassas along US 281.

Other suggestions welcome.

You can't go wrong with East Tn. I live in WNC and love it except the taxes. Got to much family here or I'd be in Bristol, Tn. Good luck with your choice.....Telico Plains would be 2nd choice

Been through there.  Mountain Home/Johnson City has a VA Medical Center, and an old Air Force buddy lives in Louden.  Nice RV park at Punkin Center Motorcycle Resort.

It's on the list, will go there this summer to check it out.

WA state, more specifically Vancouver.  No state income tax, no sales tax across the bridge into Portland. Oceans to the West, mountains to the east and Sunshine to the South.

I live in Louisiana right now, colder than coastal WA in the winter and could really use some liberal thinking! WA has plenty of rednecks too!

You have a lot of restrictions.....sounds like you already have the few options noted.

But I am curious....why not within 250 miles of any coast?  San Diego....or more specifically, Coronado has the best weather in the nation.  T-shirt weather year around.....never freezes here and never in the triple digits.  Florida has places that has similar temps but they also have the high humidity and that's where this area beats Florida.

I could never afford to live here.....my job brought me here.  And that's about to change....I've transferred to a new construction project in San Diego but it's still great year around weather. :2vrolijk_21:  The down side....taxes to high and real estate in Coronado is some of the highest in the nation.  That's what the great weather brings.  :nixweiss:

Coastal living is usually cost prohibitive, and high tax area.  Geo-politically, they are all blue states, and I think most are not gun friendly, except for the hurricane coasts.

And only one way to ride....away from the coast.  I lived in Savannah and it was boring.
Lived in Machias Maine, and got taxes to death.

This is why it's hard to pick a place.  I have lots of places I don't want to live, and just cant find a place to call home for the next thirty or so years.  I was military and lived all over.

I have spent a lot of time in San Diego and I agree it is a great place, but as you said you need to be in a pretty high income bracket to enjoy S CA.  love N CA, redwood forest and route 1. That was the beauty of WA state, not far from great places to ride.

Anyone heard of a place called Maggie Valley NC 28751?
We have and will retire there. 45 minutes from South Carolina, 45 minutes from Gatlinburg, an hour from Georgia, 1.5 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 1.5 miles from Wheels Through Time, .25 miles from great riding roads, low taxes, good community, good hospital not far, I-40 10 miles away, a rider's paradise.
Our property is at 3500' so no need for A/C. Have 15 Apple trees, Elk come almost every evening. Stream on back of property with good water.
Yep, a great place to spend 30 more years.

Down side to MV listed below,

Does anyone remember the SouthEastern Road Riders from the 1970's?  Rode the north Georgia mountains, Cherokee, and all over that area a lot in the lat 70's.

That area is on the list.  But I'll have to do winter in Texas.

I'd go to the Texas Hill Country...Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Boerne, Wimbereley, etc.  Low taxes, no state income tax, good weather, friendly folks, Texas swagger, crooked roads.  One of my favorite motorcycle destinations.
