Watched a show the other day, the blame the past jump in gas prices on speculators and large investment firms working their way around the sparse regulations. Gas stockpiles were going up, but so were the prices. Enron was big into this and the guys working there went to other investment firms after their demise.

This is a joke.  I was talking to my dad who has coffee every morning with his buddies.  One of them charts gas and oil prices and he said that the price of gas today should be around $1.45 a gal. when you look at the price per barrel of oil.

A staion by my house is at $1.89   and there is one by my work and their price is $1.80.  I have never seen that much difference.  It almost seems like they don't know what to charge anymore.

As long as viable energy sources that make sense - nuclear, coal, and petroleum - are relegated to the control of USA global warming bogeymen believers and anti-capitalists, the price manipulation of segments of the energy price structures are easier for those speculators who wish to cash in.  Investments in alternatives - including solar and wind and especially ethanol - will not add enough energy to the mix to prevent this in the foreseeable future.

In other words, unless we produce more energy that is cost efficient HERE, we rely on other countries and OPEC.  Such reliance has prove to be a foolish path in the past.  The current administration appears to demonize coal and appears unwilling to allow drilling for oil where vast supplies exist or build nuke plants.  GM, Ford, & Chrysler may be required to place large cloth sails on the top of their new fuel efficient land schooners soon, though.  HD is considering rubber band technology according to unfounded internet rumors.  Bike will self wind but power output is not even.... across the band.

Gas here in New Orleans went from a low of $1.31 to yesterday its about 1.59.

Although there can be a difference of .30 within 5 miles!

A lot of the country's in a deep freeze. Refineries ramp up their output of home heating oil (#2) and cut back on gasoline production. The price of gas goes up. So even though we don't need heating oil here in SoCal, we pay for it indirectly. I will simply say You're Welcome to all you snowbirds  :P

BB, we we're talking about this the other day.  No question that the home heating oil market buoys the prices in the winter.

Along of course with the usual specualtors that are always pushing the envelope, maybe there are fewer players now, we can always hope. :nixweiss:

We can only hope, but I'm not encouraged after speaking with a friend over the weekend who is in management at one of the "big 3" in the country.  He reported during our conversation that less than 30% of the future oil contracts were held by the majors.  The remainder held and traded by third party/speculators.  They're as pissed as everyone else about the false influence on the crude prices.

That's right.  We are 70% DEPENDENT on foreign oil.  And these foreigners are not our friends.

Oil fell $2 to below $42 a barrel on Friday as gloomy economic data gave fresh signs of the depth of the recession which has eroded oil consumption.

British data confirmed the economy had gone into recession for the first time since 1991, and Spanish unemployment surged to a nine-year high.
