HD Store Locations for Garmin GPS
« on: March 04, 2006, 11:27:03 AM »

To all Garmin GPS owners,

I would like to find out if there would be any interest in displaying HD Store locations using the Garmin GPS unit? It would not be hard to extract the latitude/longitudes from the HD Find Dealer interface and reformat the data for import as a Point of Interest (POI) into the Garmin. Just cannot justify the work for just myself but if others want it, I would get on it.

No rain.......somewhere on this site there is a link to download all the Harley dealerships nationwide.  Of course there would be interest if for no other reason than to find one in an emergency situation.  Not sure where that link is at but you might try a search. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Being new to GPS, I'm not sure how to get it from the link into my GPS?

It's been interesting reading all the reviews and feed back on GPS last night and this morning.  Some say that the GPS is not always right and that you have to sometimes go with your gut insticts..........while others say that you have to learn to trust and believe the GPS that it'll save you time.  I almost wanted to make a sexest reference here.........but I'll be nice. JC;

The file no-rain posted will download the locations to your GPS as waypoints. With the 2730 you also have the capabilities to download them as custom points of interest (POI's). It's a little better (IMO) as you can then do a search to find the closest etc.

PM me if you want the files & I can e-mail them to you.

I completely agree with Steve that it would be better to import the location as POI. Steve can you make this file available for all of us?

Thanks,
No-Rain

P.S. Here is the complete US waypoint file that I merged using the data from the website in the above post.

No problem, I tried to post them, got an "invalid file format" message. If anybody wants them, PM me w/ your e-mail addy & I'll zap 'em to you. These files work w/ the 2730, not sure about other models.

Just download the GBD file from the website for the states you want and then double click on it. This will bring up the MapSource interface. You can customize the symbol by doing the following:

No-Rain I have the 2620 and I am assumeing that I need MapSource to import the Gdb files correct? All that came with my unit is the usb drivers disk so is that correct I have to buy MapSource separate?
Thanks
Bubba

Bubba,

You should be able to upload the HD store POI file without having to have MapSource. I will email you the POI file. Also, you will need to download and install the Garmin POI updater; it is located at:

Thanks again, to No-Rain, Displacing Air and Bungee for all your help.  I got the POI downloader loaded and then got the file loaded to my GPS 2730!  I want to thank you guys for explaining it in detail and sending me the files to download.

I thought it was really interesting how it shows the closest one first and then by relative distance the next and the next and so on.........the same as restaurants, gas, ATM, etc.  I'm sure this little feature will get used as much as any of them when on the road.

This Garmin GPS thing is one of the most valuable things that I've added to the bike......well worth the money (although it was a gift).  The fact that I can also use it in the car or truck is a bonus.

Not to a 2620 John.  That model won't accept POIs or just about any other kind of upload except for program updates.  It's a deficiency of that particular model.  A techie at Garmin has told me "it's in a future upgrade" of the software for the 2620.  And they are still doing updates for them as the 26XX series is still popular.  But with newer models out now you have to assume anything specific to the now "older" 2620 will be a back burner project for someone.

2lane again thanks as I was going to buy the ver 7 MapSource software Which after talking to you would not do me any good except for updating my already loaded 2620 V6 to V7.  What I wanted to do is to be able to copy routes or create routes from my PC and then down load them to my 2620. Thanks Again Don.

DDL, it's not an empty space issue.  The disk drive in the 2620 has tons of unused space.  It's a software issue.  The system in the 2620 just wasn't built with the options to do the inputs that have been talked about here.

Have you looked on the Garmin site for a firmware update?  If one is not available, I'd go to the GPS forums.  I'd be surprised if some techie/geek hasn't figured out a way around it.  If you find a "fix," back up your original first.

Now you have my interest peaked.  Someone got a dead unit they want to donate?  I have a programmer that can modify just about anything!  I am like Twolane, I'd hack my on and modify the code!  The only difference is I have found if you actually print out the code on paper you often find something you missed while scrolling through it.  Unfortunately, that's not easy and kills a few hundred trees at times!  But now Twolane, you have officially earned the title Dr. Twolane and killed my hypothesis on adding Dr. as a prefix!   ;)

How is everybody downloading the Harley Dealerships as POI.  Has anything changed in the past few years?
