2013 road glide cvo not starting coughing alot
« on: July 05, 2018, 11:29:43 PM »

My 13 road glide cvo is often coughing a Lot when I try to start it . It always starts by the fourth or fifth attempt. It spits a Lot of smoke out of the air cleaner when it doesn't start. Happens on initial start up for the day and often after getting gas or shorts stops along the way.  Looking for your opinions thanks

I also have a fullsac crossover pipe that is cracked all the way around right where it connects to the exhaust.. i brought it into a dealer today and they tell me that the comp is fine and it's doing it because I'm losing all my back pressure but a part of me still thinks it's the comp like you guys say

What you mentioned in your first post was quite common on the early 110's with the original design compensator.  That comp allowed way too much movement, to the point that it affected ignition timing during cranking which caused kickback and hard starting.  For the 2010 models Harley started installing the SE compensator in the 110 engines at the factory, and that seemed to correct the problem.  Unfortunately the SE compensator had it's own issues that caused rapid wear, so some people have reported the same starting issue even with the SE compensator, just less often compared to the original design.  How many miles do you have on the compensator in the bike now?  Do you hear a knocking noise when you shut the engine down?  You might need to find a better shop with better techs to get a good diagnosis, it sounds like you got a BS artist on your recent dealership visit.

Yup, compensator is the #1 suspect. It's actually amazing you got 43,000 miles on the original.  If you have an ESP, check with them to see if they will cover it.  If so, you don't need to go to a dealership, there are many independent shops that also work with ESP's.
