black shoe sole marks on pipes
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:50:13 PM »

Hello Forum Members, I successfully washed my CVO yesterday, got the seat wet, no problem at all !! Used my Stihl leaf blower (no Air Shammy to use) to help remove water, final wipe down was with several micro fiber towels, nice water mark proof shine !!!

Now, I have another issue to deal with and need some more advice, when washing the exhaust, I noticed melted black shoe sole marks on the exhaust pipe heat shield.

Question, what is the safest way to remove these marks without scratching the chrome pipe heat shield ? Aluminum foil ? 0000 steel wool ? Goo Gone ? what works best ? Thanks to all !!

Chrome polish, if that doesn't work Oven cleaner does a hell of a job.

I've used 0000 steel wool with WD40 to remove those marks and didn't scratch the chrome.  Your results may be different so check on a small spot.

Wenol Chrome polish, it's the best, it comes in 3 grades, get the red tube, you can get it on Amazon or in most auto part stores.  It works on brass, Aluminum  and other metals too.  :2vrolijk_21: Be very careful with 0000 steel wool....I would never use that.

Most walmarts still carry the original easy off oven cleaner and it works 100 percent.
Spray on, leave sit a few hours wipe off.

I seem to recall someone here using oven cleaner to clean their black engine, it wasn't so black upon completion. Be careful.
I've used aluminum foil or an old copper Penney in the past.

To be used on chrome exhaust pipe and it works every time . Common sense needs to be used, only spray the area with boot marks and not any painted areas.

I bet he learned a valuable lesson after he did that?! Ouch

I've had best results with Easy Off oven cleaner and a copper pad - no marking pipes on any of my past or present scoots. I got tired of doing this nearly every time I'd ride, and installed a Brukus Boot Shield. I would recommend this and they offer a discount to forum members. No more worry or scrubbing the pipes.

I have had good results using Harley Boot Mark Remover. Also used oven cleaner but have found the Boot Mark Remover better.

I hope Hoist sees this thread. He had me follow him (me on his FX)  down the breakdown lane for 5 miles to the Throgs Neck Bridge toll booth over glass and chunks of metal and god knows what with no issue at all  When we got to his house in Queens he saw a black boot heel mark on his Pythons and went totally postal on me.  LOL   He was so wound up, I could not help but laugh.

turtlewax chrome polish works for me. maybe a little more rubbing than some of these others. the key for me is "chrome polish". just my opinion. (ya know what they say about opinions)

depends how bad it's melted on I usually get it hot and remove the worst with a popsicle stick then use Adams chrome polish with a drill and pad if it's real bad, it comes in 2 grades, even takes the scratches out of the chrome.

Step 1: let your bike cool
Step 2: spray easy off onto a clean rag that won't stick to pipe
Step 3: spread the cleaner on exhaust and wait 5-10 minutes
Step 4: wet and wring a separate rag
Step 5: turn on bike and let exhaust get hot
Step 6: using wet rag start scrubbing and peel by hand or use Teflon safe spatula to peel off
Step 7: reapply easy off as in step 2 but this time don't wait-rub onto hot exhaust and keep scrubbing with wet rag--should be steaming-and use Teflon spatula if needed-use it lightly
Step 8: now that the plastic bag/boot marks are gone, rinse pipe using clean rag
Do not spray easy off on paint or directly on exhaust-use rag to wipe on!!

See photo-this plastic bag stuck to my 15 CVO SG /0 miles into owning-got 99.99% off-rest will come off shortly; my uncle followed my method hrs later and removed black boot marks from his Kawasaki pipe after months with it on it

I would not use steel wool. This type of job needs a solvent with out abrasives. So far I have been able to get my small marks off with a chrome polish but is takes a lot of work.

Tried clay bar and detailer yesterday while waiting on some other stuff. It will take the black off and makes chrome look amazingly shiny/clean. But it takes awhile. On a seperate note, clay bar will do a wonderful job cleaning and removing road stuff from plastic headlamps and makes windshield clean clean and smooth, all kinds of crap sticks to headlamps and windshield on your car/truck.
