What happened to Jessee?
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:40:32 AM »

Had my usual Saturday chat with my owner today. We talked about the fine line he is walking in all of the Screamin Eagle (crossed flag stuff) work that goes on in his shop. He says it is a topic of discussion on a weekly basis amoung he and his managers and that they are constantly monitoring what is happening on all fronts with regard to regulation and enforcement. What happened to Jesse James concerned him greatly. He spoke about how aggresively the MoCo has marketed Screamin Eagle products. He feels his problems when they become that will not come from the MoCo, but from government entities like C.A.R.B ( California Air Resources Board) and the EPA/DOT. So my point here is don't worry about the MoCo doing things to their bikes so that they can't be modified. As I said they've got too big a stake in that with the whole Screamin Eagle Brand line. Worry about enforcement via the government. In Maine, if a cop stops you for modified exhaust, he'll ask you if it was done by a dealer. If you tell him yes and name the dealer, he'll fill out a report and another cop will visit the dealer and confirm if they installed the pipes or not via their work order system. If they did, they get a fine as well as the guy on the bike and the dealer's fine is a lot more substantial than the rider. Long story short from what I hear, The H-D dealers in Maine will not install performance exhaust systems on bikes for customers.

Monster fine for 'Monster Garage'
Show creator Jesse James is dinged nearly $300,000 for smog violations.
By Andrew Blankstein, Times Staff Writer
January 27, 2007

With creations like the "Undertaker" and "666 El Diablo," Jesse James and his West Coast Choppers team have become TV stars and automotive icons by turning average motorcycles into pimped-up machines.

But California air regulators announced Friday a $271,250 fine against James, the co-producer and host of "Monster Garage" and "Motorcycle Mania," saying that 50 of his custom-built choppers ran afoul of California's clean-air rules.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR THE RECORD:
Emissions fine: In the Jan. 27 California section, a headline on an article about state air regulators announcing a fine against Jesse James over emissions violations on motorcycles he customized said he was the creator of the television show "Monster Garage." He is the show's host and a co-producer. —

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
California Air Resources Board officials said their inspectors found that the monster bikes sold between 1998 and 2005 did not have state certified emissions equipment on their exhaust and fuel systems.

As a result, bikes were spewing hydrocarbons at up to 10 times the state limits, said Paul Jacobs, chief of the board's Mobile Sources Enforcement branch.

The market for custom-built motorcycles has taken off in recent years as celebrities, athletes and other gilded age luminaries plunk down $50,000 — and far more — for signature rides.

James, who is married to actress Sandra Bullock, could not be reached for comment. Nobody who answered the phone at his Long Beach-based West Coast Choppers would discuss the state action.

Regulators said James' celebrity status was not the reason he was targeted. Souping up motorcycles has become a huge industry, and the state has cited, sued or settled air pollution cases with more than 20 motorcycle customizers, Jacobs said.

In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has fined other auto customizers — including the similarly named but unrelated West Coast Customs, which was then affiliated with the MTV show "Pimp My Ride" — for allegedly replacing steering wheel air bags with TV monitors.

Despite James' maverick image, his hamburger joint next to the bike shop is promoted as environmentally friendly, including using solar energy.

Cisco Burgers' website says: "We use biodegradable paper products, natural, no preservative meats, organic dairy and produce."

I don't think it's an issue of dollars as much as the issue with CARB and the EPA rules as they apply to motorcycles.

This is why many dealers will stop doing any mods on 2007 and newer in the future.

I'm glad someone brought that up. Jesse's wife number 2 was a porn star whom he dumped for Sandra who by many a press release has been referred to as " America's Sweetheart "   Guess there's more to her than meets the eye  8)

According to American Motorcyclist (March 2007) the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is considering adding motorcyles to its vehicle smog-testing program. They're considering adding motorcycles to the smog-testing program because it 'believes that a lot of motorcyclists change their exhause pipes and jetting, which could mean those bikes don't meet emmissions restrictions. "  The board is also considering other restrictions including an annual inspection program for vehicles, all part of an effort to put together a plan to comply with EPA requirement by the summer of 2007.

This does not sound good, since the EPA normally has eyes oon on adopting California rules nationwide. !! :soapbox:

Having lived in SoCal for many years and having to deal with smog emission testing, me thinks the California Politico's just like putting that wand up our tail pipes. :'(

I don't know if this is true, just heard it by word of mouth, but I was told there are a few counties in California where you can't have a gas mover, has to be electric, and you can't have a charcol grill. Any of you guys from California ever heard of this???

Dec 11, 2006 - CALIFORNIA TO LIMIT LAWNMOWER EMISSIONS
Editorial

The Environmental Protection Agency granted California long-awaited permission Monday to slash emissions from lawnmowers and other small-engine machines, a change it will seek nationally next year. The EPA waiver will allow the nation's most populous state, starting Jan. 1, 2007 to require highly polluting small engines to be sold with catalytic converters that cut smog emissions by roughly 40 percent.

Is that new EPA thing in Calif regarding 2-stroke or 4-stroke or both. I think I heard somewhere that 2-strokes are to be completely phased out and illegal soon.

They already did the 2 strokes and now it is all.

Not quite the case yet although they've put some heavy restrictions on the gas mowers that are supposed to come into effect in another year or two.  You can still buy charcoal or a charcoal grill although I wouldn't be surprised to see that come into effect, too.

They have now included into the building code......only one log burning fire place per home.  The others have to be natural gas burning.  I've also heard that there are overides on that code that come with a hefty price tag.  I don't personally know of anybody who has built a home in the past couple years with more than one log burning fire place, so that's second hand information (or gossip?). :nixweiss:
