If I get to 120mph, I'm not looking at my tach...

But here's a calculator to figure it out if you want to:  http://www.bgsoflex.com/rpmmph.html

If I get to 120mph, I'm not looking at my tach...

But here's a calculator to figure it out if you want to:  http://www.bgsoflex.com/rpmmph.html

Looks like that calculator is designed for automotive type vehicles, not Harley's.  No place to input the primary drive ratio.

The final drive (belt) ratio on a 2010 SESG is 2.125 (68/32), the trans ratio in 6th is 1.0, the rear tire diameter is 26.18".  If you just plug those numbers into the calculator you come up with 3274 rpm at 120 mph.  Definitely not a good number.  To make the calculator work correctly for a Harley, you need to multiply the final drive (belt) ratio by the primary drive ratio to come up with what the calculator calls the final gear ratio.   So instead of putting in 2.125 in that first box, use 2.875 instead.  Now the rpm at 120 mph comes out at a more realistic 4430 rpm.

Primary = 46/34 or 1.353     Final Drive = 68/32 or 2.125    Total overall ratio = 1.353 x 2.125 =  2.875 in 6th gear

btw, Overall ratios for late model Touring bikes with 68 tooth rear sprockets:

1st  =  9.593
2nd =  6.650
3rd =  4.938
4th =  4.000
5th =  3.407
6th =  2.875

When I'm going 120, I'm usually looking at my iPad mounted on the left handlebar, so I can make sure I get those 80 kPa, 4000+ RPM cells all filled in GREEN on the DataMaster histogram!!!  :2vrolijk_21:

Must have an inaccurate speedo or tach, since 4200 rpm should equal 114 mph according to the calculator.  I think you should file a complaint with H-D.  ;)

My speedo is off by 4 mph versus the GPS at 110 mph, so a 6 mph error at an even higher indicated speed doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility.

Trust me, I did my own calculations as well as plugging the info into that calculator Terry posted a link to.  4200 rpm with stock gearing and tire is 114 mph, just like that calculator says.  Harley speedometer's are pretty optimistic when you get into the triple digit area.

HD speedometers are "happy", as are a lot of auto speedometers.  Mine read 3 mph faster than I was going at "normal" speeds (60-80mph), and may have been worse at triple digit speeds, I don't know.  I calibrated mine to within .5 mph (close enough for government work) with the TTS.  If in doubt, look at the GPS speed...it's accurate if it's picking up more than two satellites.

My bike has seen 120mph, but only for a very brief period of time...things happen very quickly at 120mph so my eyes are pointed directly in front of me.

Yeah, do it a few more times, and try to take the picture at 90° to the face of the gauge next time to eliminate any parallax error.  btw, I'm adding a disclaimer just like all those big companies do these days.  "The choice to follow my recommendation is strictly the responsibility of the rider.  Any tickets or other negative outcomes are not my fault, and I will not be accountable for such negative outcomes."

 :confused5:  Unless you changed the final drive ratio, 120 should be about 5200 rpm in 5th gear.  Are you saying your bike won't pull 5200 rpm in 5th, or are you one of the guys who did the 30 tooth trans sprocket?

Youz guys are a whole lot braver than I could ever be.  I think my limit is about 100. Maybe I just like my head a little  more than some.  :nixweiss:   Or maybe I'm just not in that big of a hurry.  ::)

Remember to check your tire speed rating when you get her stopped. H rated tire is only good for 130MPH as I recall.  :2vrolijk_21:

Nice.  But you haven't done 120 yet.  There's this thing called speedo error.

:confused5:  Unless you changed the final drive ratio, 120 should be about 5200 rpm in 5th gear.  Are you saying your bike won't pull 5200 rpm in 5th, or are you one of the guys who did the 30 tooth trans sprocket?

Jerry
saying it probably won,t stay together.

Unfortunately true.  They are fast by just a bit.  So whatever you just touched on the speedo wasn't actually quite reached yet.  No appreciable difference in the pucker factor though.  Still get points for that.

I also am not lookin at my tach  :nixweiss:  If and when I even do go over a hundred (on a HARLEY)

crotchrocket all day long over a hundred for miles and miles  ;)
Rode my son-in-laws R-1 to 131 and had to make an exit. Then got on my  :pumpkin: for some more! At 112 or so on a very windy day I started getting a little wobble on the handlebars!!  :o  The Pumkin got there quick and felt like she had some more to give! Don't remember the RPM's but seems like I had plenty to spare! That wiggle was my cue to ease out.  ;D After a shock upgrade I may try it again??

That's good! I've heard a few guys on the forum talk about some bad wobbles on some new models at even 100 MPH. One guy said he went down?? Not Good!! I think the wind contributed to mine that day. It wasn't like a tank slapper bout to happed just more wiggle in the handle bars than I felt comfortable with!
