Title: Suspension upgrade
Post by: Aussie on December 10, 2021, 12:26:37 AM
2012 FLHXSE3
Currently have stock suspension and looking at changing for a smoother ride.
I have 2 choices Legend or Ohlins.

Rear chockers,
Legend and Ohlins both have the rebound and spring tension adjustment.

Fork tubes,
Legend have the preload adjustment on the cartridge it self that is not accessible once the fork tubes have been assembled, if they need fine tuning you would need to dismantle the fork tubes.

Ohlins to what I understand have the preload adjustment on the top fork tube nut making any adjustments easy.

What are you thoughts on the Legend vs Ohlins?

Well I'm a cross dresser in this respect, I'm running Ohlins on the rear and Legends on the front.

I was going to run Ohlins up front too, but Jim at Metal Dragon carries the Legends so I went with those.  I changed out the rears to Ohlins some years ago, and just never got around to doing the fronts.  I should have done them earlier as they have made all the difference.  The overall ride is much better and it corners well.  Most of all I appreciate the dampening.

Both are excellent.  Pick what your pocket is comfortable with.

I have Ohlins front and rear (2015) Road Glide Ultra it improved both handling and ride quality. I can't speak for Legends but I can say it definitely made a huge difference.

Sounds like they are both a good shocker with the reviews and research I have done.
Most the dealer outlets in Aus recommend the Legend’s so possibly will get the Legend due to availability.

Thanks for your feed back.

On my CVO King I ran 13" Ohlins on the rear and about  year later did legends up front.  Both are good companies.  Rode ,much better than stock.

I put the Progressive Suspension front cartridges on my '08 SEUC in 2009.  Eliminated brake dive, handling much improved, smoothed a lot of bumps, made it feel like riding on road made of very smooth firm rubber (only way I can describe it, but very nice).

Only drawback was they seemed to wear out after about 12,000 miles (one year of riding).  For the cost of parts and labor, decided not to replace them yearly.  No problem, sold bike.  Wouldn't use Progressives again b/c of short life (don't know if they've fixed that).

Wondering:  Is the adjustable preload on the Ohlin front cartridges that useful, since most of the weight change is on the rear shocks? [Edited to add "front cartridges"]

Ohlins front and rear on my 2021 CVO Road Glide.  Love them.  Improved tracking and handling immensely.

I too had Carol (Smarty) Burks install front and rear Ohlins two years ago and they are wonderful.  That being said--the rear shocks are easy to install and adjust. But the front need special attention and I would have them installed by someone close by who can service them for you when they need adjustment or service.  Also, double check the adjustment on the front tubes, I'm not sure about that.

How did you get on in the end?
I've had the remote res Screamin' Eagle / Ohlins on the rear for a few weeks now, love them so far!
About to get some Big Bear / Ohlins fitted up front in the next couple of weeks. Excited much!
