Title: Carbon Crystal VS Carbon Dust Paint
Post by: robertg on September 22, 2020, 09:49:27 AM
Is there an actual difference between the two colours? I bought a take off paint set from a CVO Street glide and the tags inside some of the pieces say carbon crystal, and some say carbon dust? The dates on the inside say 06/15, so I'm not sure if it is from a a 2015 or 2016 model? I thought there was a late release carbon crystal 2015 model, but I would think June production would be a little late for a 2015 bike?

I haven't received the tank yet, but in the pictures it has metal badges. The fairing, tank and lids all have phantom flames, but the bags are solid black.

I had a 2016 CVO SG that was Carbon Crystal, it had silver in the ghost flames, I’m not a 100% sure but I believe the 2015 CVO SG had more of gold in the ghost flames, maybe that’s the difference?

I have a 2015 CVO SG in carbon crystal/phantom flames. My understanding was H-D did a mid year release with this color because of problems with the yellow paint on one model of the 2015 SESG. H-D brought back the carbon crystal with phantom flames in 2016. The paint scheme is exactly the same as the 2015. The differences between the 2015 and 2016 are wheels and a few other items that the 2016 has that the 2015 doesn’t have. Like the tire pressure reading.

Carbon Crystal and Carbon Dust must be the same colour, just different names. All of the body parts look like they are the same colour to my eye. The OEM parts finder also calls it Carbon Dust.

If you really want to know, have a shop or jobber that mixes PPG use the two names/years etc and he can verify the formula's are the same or not.
